I love my g9 as well and won't be selling it. We really need to get RAW support. This is a major problem for Panasonic as they claim that in photo mode, when you take a picture it is always flashing the sensor twice simultaneously. One over exposed and one under. Then depending on the IRE values of the pixels it chooses which ones to write to the card. Obviously this is going to give much better dynamic range and cleaner shadows that previous M43 cameras. This is similar to the Dynamic Range boost in video but supposed to be better and used at any ISO. BTW due to using the 2 gain output the GH6 raws are 16bit vs the 12 bit we get out of the G9. We really need Raw support to see what this camera can do photography wise. AND ASAP!

But it's not worth it to me to sell my G9 now for little money (prices have already dropped for used G9s) and add another €1700 for an OM 1. Still, I would like a G10 that has the improved features like AF, better high iso performance in a smaller package than the GH6. Basically this camera is already finished, the development work is already done with the GH6. All Panasonic has to do is manufacture it. I don't understand why Panasonic is letting customers migrate to OMDS. A G10 could also be offered for under €2000, then with a charger and customers would be very happy to stay with Panasonic.

I'd be a huge fan of a properly implemented built-in camera ND Filter. ND Filters are stupidly expensive to buy for every lens you own with different filter sizes. Also a pain to screw on and off. Agree with you JensM. As a stills shooter who is pretty content with my current cameras, what would I really like? I cap my ISO at either 1600 or 3200, depending on the camera, where my threshold is how far can I push ISO and get a clean and detailed 13X19 print without resorting to any AI fixes which, as a traditionalist, I have yet to embrace. If I could push that another stop or two, say 6400, that would make me happy, but not at a cost of $2-3K which includes extraordinary video capabilities I have no interest in. So I’ll wait for the next generation still-oriented camera and see if it fits the bill. Here’s hoping.

Like many people I take photos and video (the latter capturing the movement and atmosphere of the moment that photos can’t). I wouldn’t select any camera these days that wouldn’t support both needs. To get the best of both and keep the benefits of compactness and portability (which is why I moved from Nikon D500 to Panasonic GH5) is a real challenge for the manufacturers. I think Panasonic have done a good job with the GH6. Although there isn’t yet third party RAW support you can use Silkypix to view and convert RAW to TIFF and look at the quality of those photos rather than just look at the JPEGs. Panasonic provide the link to the free Silkypix Studio software.

In my opinion MFT is not a good system for vintage lenses because almost all legacy lenses are designed for 35mm or larger film size. Therefore it's very difficult to find wide angle vintage lenses for MFT. You'd have to find something shorter than 25mm and those tend to be expensive and/or hard to find. I'd start with a 50mm lens which would be a short telephoto on MFT.

It's possible that Live View Composite will come with a firmware update. I think that's what happened with the GH5M2. "Most casual photographers would find this camera too large" Do you really know a lot of "casual" photographers that spend $2,200 on a camera body? I surely don't. And neither do the camera manufacturers, because they are losing their shirts to people taking casual photos on....THEIR SMARTPHONES. As pro cameras go, the GH6 is still no larger than most pro photo cams. In fact it comes in around the same size as my old consumer-grade T3i. That said, I agree with you that if you are not doing video, then this cam certainly has less appeal.
@mattisulanto2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for sharing. Well, the price doesn't change how the camera size feels for a casual photographer😀 I was only describing the size from a real world perspective. One of the original MFT values was a compact size. Besides, a professional can also photograph casually on weekends, for example. But you are right, most casual photographers use a phone camera.

@@mattisulanto hi there. Yes. I'm a pro for 40 years and have used 5d's, yet always preferred my t3i. I've been using a phase one 150mp (correct owned), but prefer shooting that hi res with the gh6's 100mp. And yes, my first mft was the g85, which I love so much, it was the reason I popped for the gh6. Though in terms of size I will admit to a bit of Goldie Locks syndrome. Phase and 5d way too big. G85, too small, but great with the battery grip on. Gh6 will be great with a small grip attached, if they finally release one (3rd party). But at least here in NYC, I'm not sure I even know many photo-only shooters anymore. Everyone is a "content" creator now. We often need to shoot video to keep the doors open. Maybe overkill, but yes it does indicate a path in life. And I am holy jealous that you retired from the commercial world into doing what you're doing. And you do a beautiful job of it. If I may let me add a couple of quick notes on the things about the gh6 that I like for photography the autofocus is just as good for photography as any Canon camera I've ever had. The spot metering is a nice addition, and the high res I'm drooling over and loving. Bigger and heavier? Yes, and I would have to think about that before doing a casual walkabout. Even though the sensor is nowhere near as good for photography, I stole lean towards the g85 for a walkabout. But for professional shoot it can't compare with the gh6. I wish I still had my 5D. It would be interesting to compare the photographic quality between that and the gh6.

TBH when they announced this, I hoped so much that they release a true GX8 successor with the new sensor stripping out the bulk of the video features and focusing more on providing a bulk of the G9's features in the smaller (kind of, the GX8 is a tank of a rangefinder style, a true successor would be every bit as big) rangefinder style shell. Basically, making a GX8 successor the same that the G9 was for the GH5. I'm fairly certain Panasonic thinks the market says that small cameras are dead at this point, which is a crying shame, but also not all that far off to an extent. The market is smaller and smaller every year and with people so hung up on sensor size, for almost zero reason for 98% of people or more, it's a LONG shot for them to make the GH6, much less a true rangefinder style GX...8 mark ii? They kind of screwed up making the GX9, which to me is just a successor to the GX85, which was more just a GX7 Mark II...My kit is usually a GX8 with a 12-60 Leica zoom, GX85 with a 20mm pancake, and an E-P5 with the Olympus 17mm 1.8 wide angle lens. Then again, I've been dying to have a Lumix MFT camera that's a fixed 20mm Leica lens with LX100 style manual dials on top and body size while having the GX9's tilting screen, AF-mode switch, etc. There's no true competition with the X100V price range wise for a fixed lens compact. The X100V has also basically been permanently out of stock since before the pandemic was even a thing with even Fuji's stores marking them up past 2000 USD in same cases. Leica could even sell a rebranded model for double the price like they enjoy doing. Would be rare to have a compact Leica with a solid fixed 40mm lens equivalent.

excellent video as always matti. my cameras are all panasonic, and years ago I chose the gx7 because of the exceptional user interface and I still think panasonic has one of the best menu systems. over the years panasonic has steadily improved their camera features. I'm really impressed with the lumix S5 especially being a member of the L mount group. sadly, yes the auto focus lags behind other systems but I mostly shoot my images in manual focus which is actually pleasant to use on the lumix S5. zen billings

Too big and heavy for MFT. Matti, I agree with you. I don't shoot video so give me a photographers camera with the new sensor and stills features. For rangefinder lovers, how about a GX-7 body with all the new stills hardware? For SLR lovers, how about the G7 or G85 body with the new stills hardware? Would love to go back to M4/3 but not till the bodies go back on a diet

It is pretty annoying the way camera manufacturers use their own proprietary raw file formats. Why can't the all use the same one, for example DNG?

Hey Matti, You have mentioned the most positive/negative things. Senseless to repeat it all again. So only the most important in my opinion: 1 a real new sensor - great! 2 size/weight could be to much. 3 Is there a better = more reliable focus ? In comparison to Olympus it is difficult to decide. If I have to buy (a new camera) I would change the system to Canon R6📸 Chris

I think Sony made the right decision to move the hi-res mode heavy duty batch processing off the camera to a computer, just let the camera do what it was designed to do: capturing. By the way, the “final resting place” of all digital images are on a computer somewhere, not memory cards anyway.

Don't get me wrong I love the mft format but Panasonic is 6,years behind on af tracking and I fear they have abandoned photographers and are only interested in there video following the gx8 was the last camera I owned and loved but sadly is way behind the competition nowdays .I abandoned mft all together and will probably never go back .I think Olympus has the right size v handiling when it comes to the mft format but there menu systems and usability is blah! However I supposed users get used to this and it becomes second nature after some time. I would only ever consider buying another mft camera if they went to 30mp or perfected the handheld hi Res which shouldn't be hidden in menues but always available as normal shooting operation . I can't really see a way forward for this format but if anybody is going to do it then it will be Olympus not panasonic because they are the inovaters in this format.

Are you really a Lumix ambassador? Cause you have a lot of criticism about the camera. You are literally nitpicking about the high res mode. I heard nothing but praise about it until now. And complaining about the size is also nitpicking. Gh6 is a great camera to hold and operate.
@mattisulanto2 жыл бұрын
I'm not a Lumix ambassador. I think it's important to bring out downsides too, not only upsides. If you fail to see any downsides I think it's called fanboyism. However, this is my opinion only and you don't have to agree. If you are happy with your GH6, please ignore my nitpicking and continue creating amazing photos and videos on your camera.

I took delivery of my GH6 on 3/14/22. Great camera in all regards except customer service. I purchased it under a promo program "Free Gift for GH6 Early Adopters". This offer is for a free 128GB Lexar CFexpress memory card. My problem is after registering the GH6 as a LPS member I am unable to complete the registration process because there is no option to continue to the final steps. I emailed them numerous times with only an automated response. Has anyone received their "free" CFexpress card?

Hard to justify the size and price tag against the A7C…
@mattisulanto2 жыл бұрын
It's hard to compare those two, because they are so different cameras. The GH6 is way better video camera though, it's better any Sony below A7SIII and in many ways even better than the A7SIII. For photography I'd take the A7C.
@aviatorman82 жыл бұрын
@@mattisulanto yes I was referring to photography since your video is about that aspect.
@ddsdss2562 жыл бұрын
Agreed--this is a video beast but as a photographer who only rarely shoots video, I've no interest in lugging around a bulkier, heavier, fan-cooled rig with all kinds of capabilities I'll never use while failing to incorporate features I would use. The real deal-breaker is the lack of battery grip contacts--I shoot a lot in portrait mode and with the Leica 100-400 and in both cases the grip makes a huge difference. I also would rather have two SD slots, as there's no advantage in using other cards at this point. The silver lining I see with the GH6 lacking so many photo-oriented features is that it implies that there will be a true G9 replacement--that I would buy! Also, do you no longer have a G9? If so, I'm sorry to hear that as you helped me decide to get one and I've never regretted that. IMHO it should be the most popular camera among serious photographers who need to travel "light"--a far better choice than so-called "FF"...
@mattisulanto2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for sharing. The G9 is a great camera, but unfortunately I had to let it go, which I sometimes regret😀
@momchilyordanov81902 жыл бұрын
For photography, I would not buy this. Maybe it will give me some advantage in IQ, compared to the 20MP sensor in G9, G90 or GX9. But not enough to pay over 2000 euro for it. Buy a cheaper body and spend your money on a high quality lens. Or even two lenses.
