For most of us, it's all about what compromises we're willing to accept. As an example, I'd LOVE to carry around a 100MP medium format camera for landscape shots, but I'm not willing to spend the money or replace other items in my camera bag. I'm also not going to carry around an Alexa or Red cinema camera for video, with the crew needed to run them. I'm willing to accept the limitations of what is available in a single camera in some situations, and carry a second camera in other situations. When I want a super high-res image, doing a multi-shot panorama usually works well enough, especially if you take enough shots to compensate for moving objects / people.

in 2018 I bought the A7RII for 1500euros, this year I bought S1R for 1500euros, same price but very different specs, the S1R is far superior in every aspect except for autofocus, yes Sony's phase detect autofocus from 2015 beats anything Panasonic made before S5II... but it's fine, I've been using Lumix cameras since 2020 and autofocus has never been as big a problem for me as people tend to make it to be. Sold A7RII, partly because I wasn't as into photography anymore back then, partly because my mediocre laptop couldn't handle 42MP images very smoothly and editing was very sluggish. Now with my rekindled passion for photography plus current desktop PC this is no longer a problem. 47MP is probably the sweet spot for high resolution image, at least for me, when I want to share 100MP images from GH6 online I have to downsize it cuz most social media platforms can't handle that large of a file. Same story goes for S1R's 187MP file, which doesn't even display on Amazon Photos when I back it up on cloud. 47MP file can still be comfortably edited in Da Vinci Resolve without crashing the software during rendering. Battery life is great as well, one original battery lasted me 3.5h on and off walking and shooting

S1r is the beast. Regarding DOF in mft and ff it is a very good point, smaller sensor - all in focus, or more controlable defocus, on FF is could be crazy

Great insight and something I've said to my other photography friends for many years. I have owned or still own FF, APS-C, M43 and Medium Format cameras...and they each have their strengths and weaknesses. In the end, if I absolutely MUST choose only one format to shoot, it would be APS-C. That is because it is the perfect mix between M43 and 35mm FF sensors. Easy enough to achieve shallow DOF and balanced enough that in any light you can choose a reasonably bright aperture and higher shutter speed while still actually having something in focus. Shooting GFX at night can produce some lovely images, but if you want much in focus then you're using a tripod or something so that you can actually stop down and have SOMETHING in focus haha. Likewise with 35mm FF bodies, it's great having an f/1.2 or f/1.8 lens for letting light in, but there's nothing in focus. That's much better on APS-C, and significantly better on M43. Always the compromise, just have to pick the tool for the job. 👍

at 2:31 that is a cropped version of the 100MP image as my computer couldn't handle the full resolution stacked with a 47MP file together, had to crop down the 100MP one to finish the rendering, accidentally left the cropped version in the initial display before the comparison.

I just don't understand despite s1r for being such a tank camera not many talking about this awesome camera. Any thoughts on that?

i've seen people hyping about S1RII since phase detect autofocus implementation, plus new 61MP sensor should be a killer photo camera, makes sense as the next move for panasonic

Some gd points but a pity you used the Pana Leica 12-60 (24-120 equivalent) for the side by side comparisons. It isnt that sharp, the focal length range makes it too much of a IQ compromise. Would have been better to use the Pana Leica 10-25 or perhaps the fine OM System 12-40 f2.8 pro II. I think that would have been a fairer comparison with the Sigma 24-70.

true that leica 10-25 is superior in sharpness but i find the leica 12-60 pretty sharp when stopped down to f5.6, in the comparison both images are zoomed to the same field of view, Gh6 having only half the megapixel of S1R no matter how you look it's gonna be much less detailed when zoomed to the same area of the image, i dont think it's a problem with the lens.

i guess it'll depend on the type of vacation and location, if I go to an exciting new location for the view i'll bring S1R, if i go on vacation like in hometown or not really picturesque to me i'll use GH6

great shots. i would prefer to use a m43, but im on full frame due to some specific needs only the r5c can do which is vr video. I saw an interesting video the other day by a youtuber called Tom Rich who compared full frame with then new samsung s23 phone and it is starting to look quite close.

Hi, what is the max resolution in video that the s1r can do? I found 5k internal 420 10 bit but external through hdmi is hard to find. Do you happen to know the Internal and external to Atomos Ninja and to black magic video assist? Thanks!

i dont have any external recorder so I can't give u an answer, look up some spec sheet or review might be more helpful
