This video helped me understand this type of locker much better! I was really overwhelmed because it seemed very confusing to me but the way you described it was very clear. I was planning on putting a lunchbox locker in the front of my jeep so I was concerned when you seemed to only talk about having one in the rear, but then you included some insight from people who have them in the front too and that helped me a ton! Thank you! Definitely subscribing

Great content, hope you make more videos like this. I got lucky on my ‘85 because the previous owner installed an ARB air locker on the rear. It has an Aussie locker up front and I’ve really grown to like that setup... has got me through a lot over the years.

I subscribed, thank you. You seem honest. I just purchased a 4" suspension lift, 35-17-12.5 KO2's on Mickey Thompson Classic rims, DV8 front bumper with Evo winch mount, rear Fab4 bumper with spare tire carrier..I have factory 3.73's in my 06' Taco. I am putting both front and rear lockers in...and this settled my decision. Lock rite lockers are going in my little Taco...I drove Chevy 4x4's all along..I'm 56...but I once owned an 83: Taco...and saw the wheeling difference...I spent almost more on accessories for my Taco than what it cost me...but it's all good....my little Taco will go where only jeeps may keep up with me.. Thanks again...your info made my mind up for me. .good thanks again buddy...oh ya. I'm from up Northeast...Nova Scotia ,Canada...4 seasons of completely different weather...rocks.mud.snow...we have it all.

I put a Lock-Right in a 93 2wd Toyota pickup I used to have everything else was factory, no lift, 195/75 R14 snow tires and 300 pounds in the bed for the winter. I went places in the snow and mud that no other 2wd could get to, and proved a lot of guys with lifted 4wd's on 33's wrong about where my little 2wd Toyota could go before it ran out of ground clearance.

@96 grand cherokee laredo I don't daily drive my ZJ anymore, but I am very impressed with the road manners. I'm not sure how one in the front would do, but in the rear, I think it does great. You need to remember it stays locked 99% of the time. You can force it to unlock in tight corners, but that is if you are accelerating in a turn (causes it to bang and its loud).

I run a Aussie locker on the rear axle of my 2 door JK, and I love it when I need it, BUT I also get alot of weird looks from the people walking on the streets and also my neighbors when Im making turns. Sometimes it does lock up and unlocks around turns and it sounds like I broke a tooth off my ring gear.... 😂 at that point, they look at me like ouch. Theyre a great cheap option, but there also is a driving style you have to adopt when turning so it doesnt lock up on you. Basically gain momentum before making a turn, go into neutral, if you have a stick shift lol, and then make the turn, then re-engage the throttle to keep moving forward.

I have been driving my Hardbody with a 5spd manual trans and LockRite in the rear axle since 2005. Locker manufacturers don't recommend installing a mechanical locker in the rear if you have a manual trans because you will have to drive differently on pavement, when taking tight turns, like in a parking lot. Either you will need to coast the turn with the clutch depressed in, or you will need to give the engine throttle (with the clutch pedal out) during the turn.

I put a Spartan lock in the front diff of my 87 f150 manual hubs. Toughest 4x3 you ever saw. Drove it daily and played in every blizzard we had in the upper mid west. I have a Vitara (JDM version of Sidekick) with Detroit Locker in the rear. For me, since Suzuki is not very well sound-proved, very small and rear axel is very near the driver, you will hear the ratcheting sound during turn a bit louder than other truck, but that is unnoticeable with radio turn on. BUT in highspeed turn with gas paddle apply and then the locker decides to unlock (every time going on highway on-ramp), the banging sound is actually quite loud and every passengers always wonder if the car had a brake down. However, this locker is the best upgrade for my rig, even more useful than a 3" lifted-kit that I installed earlier.

Another add bonus over an lsd is no need for posi additive in the rears. Can save money and run just straight gear lube. I found instead of 80/90wt. Running 75/140wt does kinda cushion the ratcheting noises of the lunchbox locker. I can't use a locker on the front of my lil chevy s10 truck because of it being IFS and a tiny carrier size with 26 spline count axles. So open diff up front, locker out back. Love your vids by the way. Thinking next truck will be a 90's toyota for a trail rig and keeping the 04 S10 crewcab as my daily mall crawling pavement princess lol.

Lunchbox up front, LSD rear in my Jeep. I would have gone with a rear one instead but around me you need a front locker. The rear cant push you up and over a slippery tree that's down across the trail. Especially when that tree is on a angle and it's impossible to get both front tires to touch it at the same time. My lunchbox locker was less than 400 Canadian on Amazon.

Would it be a remotely good idea if someone used selectable (air, electric) lockers on the front axle and either detroit or grizzly lockers in the rear axle? Since the front axle could easily be converted to an open differential with the simple push of a button, and technically, the rear axle would not be a spool or locked all of the time. Thanks

Awesome! I've got a steep unpaved driveway and a 93 2wd Toyota pickup with a 22re. The driveway turns into an ice waterfall in the winter and I had a really hard time getting up it last winter. Like every time... it was horrid... I've been looking into lunchbox lockers as a way of coping with this, but I'm a bit concerned about sliding sideways. Would you recommend a lunchbox locker or tire chains for a steep, ice-covered, unpaved driveway from hell ;)? Thanks!

The problems associated with a LL in the front can be alleviated by not running in 4WD on the street. I have them, front and rear, in my Chevy K10 where they've given exemplary service for nine years and 40K miles. I only go into 4HI or 4LO when I know I'll be needing them in the next half mile......

The solid axle directly results in more flex which directly results in less of the limited slip actually slipping because the wheels doesnt try to lift as soon as it starts to flex. So saying that theres no advantage until you get a locker is really wild.
@DirtGarage

Just my experience. No point in the extra articulation if your truck can't even take advantage of it. Also the solid axle is open from factory, not limited slip.

Lunchbox locker in the rear diff ONLY if you do not drive on the road. If you do, the rear will be getting destroyed. I learned this myself. E-lockers or Air-lockers are the better choice.

These bastards will lockup with strong engine braking and acceleration. I daily mine and i hated the way it drove in corners, aspecially on wet or slippery roads. I now run Airlockers front and rear and that is what i prefer. I bought a diff with a lunch box locker 2nd hand for dirt cheap and had it in for 6months then swaped my open diff back. Saved some money for a while and bought complete diff's with ARB's and 4.88's installed by Marlin Crawler. But there seem to be a lot of people who like there lunchbox lockers. Or they just like the price more. My advise when you daily it, if you have the money or time to save some go for air lockers or a e-locker for at least the rear axle. Lunchbox in the front doesn't matter when your wheelhubs are unlocked. But if you want to control when it locks and unlocks ditch the idea of a lunchbox locker.

@@sebastiaanpeters7358 That's kind of what I was wondering about. I can imagine a situation going around a curve under engine braking where you go from a fully open diff to a fully locked diff unexpectedly. If that happened you might need to be ready with some counter-steer before things start to go sideways. I guess the obvious solution is to try not to do that in gear. Haha.

I heard both, works good in the front, never run it in the front. I have driven hubs locked in 2h had no issues. I did this having to run to the store after a heavy snow fall. One thing I will say hubs locked in 2wd or 4wd you will feel resistance while turning, or that could be just me because I'm not running high steer yet.

I would ask for the reason why not to run it in the front. Could be they installed it wrong. I had brought my front and rear carriers with new ring and pinion set to a diff shop before I installed my Tacoma rear end, no problems as of yet.
