We had the peanut butter candy rolls as you described (our didn't have raisins though). I believe our cafeteria ladies made the whole thing into a sort of "loaf" then sliced it like bread and that's why it had two flat sides. I actually have a school book somewhere that has the recipe. I will try to find it. And you are right.. these things were like gold and could be traded for ANYTHING. I often traded real candy bars for them.

My elementary school cafeteria made Peanut Butter Smoothies. They were to die for! I traded everything on my tray for smoothies then roll them into a ball and be sooooo happy! I have tried to find a recipe but have not had any luck until I worked at a nonprofit that had put out a cookbook. I was looking thru the recipes when low and behold there was a recipe that looked promising! I tried it and it was oh so very close. I went back to the book to see who had submitted the recipe and I'll be darned if it wasn't my own MOTHER! I had never asked her if she had anything like the smoothies since she had never made them. She said didn't think we would like them.

I am going to try this recipe. When I was in school (late 80s) in Kansas we had peanut butter balls that I adored! They had a little bit of crunch but it wasn't rice krispies or nuts and I haven't been able to find anything close. This looks like it has a real chance of being close. Perhaps the "little bit of crunch" (as my child mind remembers) was brown sugar. None of my recipes have had brown sugar yet. Thanks for the video!

Misty Cole that sounds like a good idea. They may not make them anymore because these days they feed children healthy foods without hardly and sugar they would probably make it with a sugar substitute, trying to slow down child obesity, thanks to Mrs Obama. They trying to help with teaching them to make better choices in choosing foods. But to me it's fruitless to make the school food as fat free and sugar free as they can but when kids get out and their parents probably take them to a fast food place so they may not have old recipe to use. Plus lunch room ladies is a new generation and probably don't know it and it probably never was past down to the next generation and the next, this is where things get forgotten and lost forever. It sure is a pity too.☹️🙁😞
