It was great meeting you this weekend at Aquashella, Dallas Texas 2019! You were as genuine in person as you are in the videos and that's something that means a lot brother. I got my Crystal Reds From Nico in front of the shrimp booth, and picked up a couple more after we snapped a pic together, and you got to handing out awards for the shrimp contest. I look to be in that contest next year with your continued influence, guidance, and awareness. Keep up the great work Rob! Standby for a video on those exact Crystal Reds that is soon to come! Peace braduh!

I have had a colony of Crystal red shrimp going for a little over a year now, but it seems that my colony always taps out in the low 30s. What do you recommend to really boost my colony so I can get tons of shrimp? Because I recently started a little side business selling them along with bristle nose Pleco’s to local fish stores in my area, and I would really like to have a massive colony such as the ones that you have. I have a preset heater in my tank also keeping them around 74 to 75

That's great to hear you are getting into a little side hustle. To really give you good info, I'd have to know your tank and your parameters. Biggest things is getting good parameters and keeping them consistent. We personally never use heaters as they tend to stress out shrimp more than they help them. Let me know your parameters and I'll do my best to help. Feel free to shoot us an email: store@flipaquatics.com

Hi Robert. This was one of your best videos imo. The detailed info about all you need to know is so valuable. Right now I just have different kinds of neo but I will try cr/cb or tiger soon. I haven't decided win one yet. This video made me want to try cr/cb. The positive thing with tigers is the possibility to share tanks with neo. Keep up the good work. //Lars from Sweden.

Its not too often I pop a comment here, but I have a question. I have an empty 7 litre tank laying about, a spare powered filter that can filter a 40 litre with no issues (I know because until recently I was using it in my 40 litre) How safe would it be to have a few, and I mean a few shrimp of any type in that tank if it used the already mentioned filter, and have the tank heavily planted with moss and quick growing plants?

Greetings from Uk. Thanks for such an easy to understand video. I am learning about water chemistry especially GH, KH and PH. Took me a while but I now understand that using GH+ and KH+ with a buffering substrate uses the buffering capacity more quickly BUT the trade off is that adding the KH gives stability? What levels of GH and KH do you recommend? Also your comments re cinnamon sticks and alder cones?? I already use almond leaves in my red cherry tank but just about to set up a 55litr Crystal red tank. I have minerals for both Neos and Caridinas but looks like the latter will be redundant now! Hey there. I just got into the hobby myself and have about eight crystal red shrimp’s to start in my 10 gallon tank. I just have a question on how to sex the shrimp. It’s my understanding that the females are larger and have a more rounded belly. I also have a question on how to naturally bring down the pH in my tank to get a better quality of comfort for the shrimp Without having to put in different solutions to do so. Please let me know, any wisdom you can offer would be great. Thanks!

I find this video highly confusing. You say that if you have a high KH, it will eat through the buffering capacity of your substrate. What? A high KH means a high amount of bicarbonate/carbonate in the water. That in and of itself is a buffering system. If the substrate has a buffering capacity like you mention, this will just add to it and increase the buffering capacity of the soil. I think what you are trying to say is that the soil has an acidic property to it, which will lower the pH and keep it around 6.7 pH or whatever. And in that case, it would make sense that as the soil leaches it's acidity, the buffering capacity of the water (measured by kH) will neutralize all of the hydrogen ions. And at some point the as the soil uses up it's entire hydrogen ion source, it will no longer lower the pH. I studied chemistry in college and this video confused me to no end. What I think you need to be saying is that the soil is acidic and the buffering capacity of the water neutralizes this acidity. And if there is too much of a buffering system in the water, it will use up all of the acidity in the substrate. If you want something that will bring down the pH of the water, you can simply add driftwood as you have mentioned. Tannins that are released by the driftwood are actually tannic acid, a weak acid that will lower pH.

Hi. Always love your videos. I do agree as far as the parameters go but not the substrate and how you are going about it. I will explain. What you are doing is adding KH to a substrate that will just remove it 24 hours or less. So let’s say you add 2dKH to the substrate it will remove to 0 24 hours or less. You can test this. So you may think you have 2dKH but you do not. So what you are doing while the buffering is still good is causing KH to keep going from 2 to 0. It will do this as long as it’s buffering is still good With that said I agree 2 KH is good for crs and even 7-7.2 PH mine thrive in. I went from 20 to 200 in a few months. This was with no buffering substrate but bdbs with 7.2 ph. 5 GH and 2KH. They breed like crazy. I just feel if you are going to get a buffering substrate just to deplete it and no use it for what it was intended for then why use it? Just use intert substrate and add the correct parameters from the start. All you are doing is causing parameter swings and possible stress during this time. Yeah after it’s depleted and you are adding KH then no issues but while it’s still good it just goes back to what it’s suppose to with a PH 6.6 and KH 0.
