Phyllis Hyman struggled a lot with her weight as well. Her and Luther were good friends. If you look at some of her interviews she sort talks around it and in a joking manner, but those closest to her said she really struggled with it. They were okay friends Luther really like gravitate to people that did drugs and alcohol. He respected a lot Phyllis Hyman and some of his musical people worked with Phyllis Hyman however they weren't super close. Luther had boundaries people don't realize that part hence he preferred his career over trying to chase after substances or what he felt was insignificant people that didn't have boundaries not that it doesn't't mean that he didn't spend a little cash chasing some ass that part and towards the end of his life he did have a special friend.

@@WenNRome Right it's like hitting that person TWICE! They lived with that struggle on earth and now in this so called 'woke' society we wanna act like WHY was it a big deal, they should've just did this/that. As a person of a certain age, let me tell you it didn't matter how great the talent, the best we would do is be on some don't ask/don't show us cause deep down when we had a FEELING about certain people we didn't want to be 'distracted' by the truth or having to lowkey shun great talents b/c of it. I'm not speaking for myself personally BUT that was the culture. Being gay was not cool and not well accepted. Sad and stupid BUT true so to constantly blame the 'gay' person and/or the Black matriarchs for this is very loaded and unfair especially when dealing with PUBLIC figures and all that come with it.

I called my friend like girl what you think am I reaching? Fast forward to the Doc. I was crying through the whole Doc. It should be noted that his friend was killed and he was the one driving and I think they were drunk. That really hurt him as well. A grown man in the theater walked out in tears. I think you are correct regarding the importance of background vocals. That is probably why Whitney, at the beginning of her life, only wanted to sing background. One, her mother was a “famous” background singer, so she knew the importance. Two, she would do a lot of her own background vocals and adlibs.

I was born in the 80's, now in my 40's and I never made the switch to other types of music. Give me my R&B slow jams from back then over anything else. I run , workout to slow music. It just relaxes me and keeps me calm. I just wish I was a great singer, I try. But I would to get a partner who can sing for me, personally, not a superstar that I have to share with the world.

Funky have you ever watched 20 Feet from Stardom? A must watch for you to really see the relevance of background. Oh Funky, your empathy with Luther really touched me. I’m so sorry you had to go through that.

Freddie Jackson was another R&B artist who struggled with his weight, and ppl trying to figure out if he was gay or not.

Freddie is probably healthier but he looks better with a little weight on him. Everybody ain't supposed to be skinny.

I loved Luther…I have attended quite a few of his concerts. I always knew he was speaking to the band…. 🎶 play it easy….keep it right there, keep it right there. 🎶 I will never listen to 🎶Any Love 🎶 the same….the story behind it speaks to any human being no matter what gender you are….😢. We all want to know that we matter to someone….❤ Thanks Q for the review of the documentary.

I was wondering if I'll cry watching the documentary but I already know either way I will. My heart hurts knowing he didn't quite receive the love he sang of so beautifully and heartfelt. My gosh! What I wouldn't do to have seen Luther in concert. I saw Peabo Bryson last year and my lil heart burst open, I even got to meet him and ask how Ms. Roberta Flack is doing. Good music is timeless and thanks for this review 💜

I enjoyed the Doc so much. I didn’t know a lot about pre Luther so I was surprised to learn that he was getting GOOD money before he was Luther, Luther

My heart broke for Luther because with all his singing credits beautiful love songs all he ever wanted was someone to genuinely love him and he never got it and with that pain he ate himself to death so sad
