Lutron RA2 select - easy to use lighting and home automation control

As a retired fella with an interest in electronics and computing, home automation is one of my things. It looks to me like systems like Lutron cater for individuals who want/need an integrated and relatively hassle free home automation system that can be installed by a qualified electrician. They also appear to be stylish. The one big dissadvantage I see is cost. The equivalent functionality system from the likes of Aqara would come in at 15-20% of the cost of the Lutron system. I thought Phillips Hue was overpriced but Lutron seem to be a whole new level.

Thanks for shedding some light on these products. At 1st I was blinded but you have really switched on my interest. 😅 however I can guarantee in the real world it'll probably not connect as well as that. In my experience with smart tech (which is limited I'll admit) it never ever seems to work as seamlessly as shown in promotional videos or demos. Personally I'll be sticking to normal glued to the wall light switch. But I can see the appeal.

Lutron wireless is that good. I have quite a few year of experience with the original Pico and it just works. Lutron has demo RA2 Select test kits for show and tell.

@@sbmorris2k6 First checking that "cam" was typo for "con" (connection). If that's the case, yes indeed you can continue to operate the lights should Wifi connection fail. The wireless RF wall remotes/keypads operate on our own patented wireless technology (Clear Connect) which is on a completely different and reliable frequency therefore isn't at all affected by Wi-fi issues. Therefore, your buttons on the wall with continue to work at all times, every time they're pressed and with no latencies. The batteries in these are designed to last 10+ years and they're just standard CR type batteries. Once replaced (in 10+ years), programming stays so no need to programme! :) Hope this helps.

I actually honest agree with what you are saying Crumpers - normally smart home features don't hold up to their marketing. However I am going to be honest, the Lutron RA2 select system, is actually one of the first smart home devices that I have enjoyed using. Heck even the other half who is a complete technophobe likes using the light switches (especially as a switch on a bedside table). We started small with our kitchen and spent about 6 months trying them out before moving to these for our entire house. Certainly not cheap but nice to use! :)

Amazing bit of kit. Would the 13amp plugs work with TV’s or other media devices? So for example I could program a schedule for the kids room to turn off at a certain time or the TV come on & off using the holiday function ?

Hi Paul, the lamp dimmers are exactly that, they are for mains dimmable lighting loads only. As it stands, in order to have appliance control you would need to wire the 16A module to it which can take up to 6A of motor loads. I was also wondering if you could use the RA2 system for other products with sensitive electrical components like TVs and game consoles as well as those used in hospitals? I see a lot of new tech for homes, commercial premises and industrial premises but not many can be used in medical or other special locations.

Hi LocoSajoca, as it stands, in order to have appliance control you have two options, you would either need to wire a 6A in-line switch to it (which can take up to 2A of motor loads) or the 16A module to it which can take up to 6A of motor loads. Hi Gareth, due to Lutron's ultra-reliable Clear Connect wireless protocol, we can guarantee no delays on your Pico wireless wall/table top controls. It's completely seperate from your home wi-fi so even if that fails completely your switches will continue to work as expected. @@scabthecat all you need, to install the in-line dimmer is access to the permanent feed and neutral in the ceiling. You then take the switched live from the device to the first fixture in the lighting circuit and your bathroom lights are on the system! You can then choose to control the lights with a wireless sensor or wireless wall switch both of which can be mounted anywhere you want. Everything could be so nice and all, but why do the switches still need to be so unergonomic? That flat push-button style looks exactly as appealing as the 25 year old wanna-be smart lighting system controlled by a Siemens PLC at my workplace. I don't want that in my home even if it was the best system on the planet.

Does the system allow the cloning of the Phone app device info to another phone - or do you need to go through all the settings again to get more than one phone to control the devices ?

Shilks, you can have multiple phones on the system using the same login details. The programming will not need to be repeated.

I have a Lutron RA2 system installed in my home in Brooklyn. What a nightmare. I have wasted so much time with this system, and it is still not working properly. I don't know why you'd want to get this system in the age of Alexa and Google home. I've spent a ton of money $3,000 to $4,000 to get people here to set up it right (builder had installed it) and it's still not working (that is NOT the cost of the system, that is JUST THE COST to fix it). Insane really. My belief is this company may have made sense a decade ago but now is a nightmare. Their supply chain to reps is not oriented or incentivized to solve problems. I feel a need to warn others.
