@@Gomitasd I don't think is lack of our culture, from the legend of La llorona there are at least 3-4 versions of it. Mexico has great diversity in their own legends, and honestly I think it's okay to not know all of them or even discover it from other people, cause you can see the interest, time and energy they invest on doing the research.

Actualy, there are Two stories of the "llorona" un México. One Is about a woman that killed her children because of the pain of loosing her Man. The other one, that Is the one that It Is use in the movie coco, talks about the love of a Man that has to leave His wife behind, so he was refering about that woman in his words. It tells a love history, un fact there Is a movie called "La llorona" that represent the first leyend, and It Is animated too. You should watch It too. Regards from México.

I heard a different story. It was one about La Llorona being a Lesbian, but couldn’t be with her one true love because her love was also a woman and had to live a “normal” life (Get married and have kids). Her husband died or left I forgot, so she drove herself to drown her kids because she thought she didn’t love them, but she deeply regretted it later and that’s why she wails every night that she wants her kids back

@@Tiffany-yy3fl you don’t understand, day of the dead is a Catholic holiday (although it has pre-Hispanic roots). It’s a religious holiday. Although the majority of Mexicans are Catholic, not all of us are. Those of us who did not grow up celebrating it, know that it exists but not the specifics of it. It’s like, now that I live in the US, a lot of white Christians seem to celebrate Easter in a specific way. I live here and I know they do it, I hear them talk about it, but I can’t really give you details about it. Many Mexican traditions are also celebrated differently in different regions of the country. The movie Coco reflects the way day of the dead is celebrated in the south. As a Spanish teacher, these are cultural aspects I teach my students but I always emphasize that traditions are different for everyone. Even when I show them videos about how people celebrate Christmas, the videos are so different from what I experienced as a non-Catholic child growing up in Mexico.

Yall got it wrong.

For those saying it is sad Natalia doesn’t know some of the information I think you guys should take into account that not all of Mexico/Mexicans celebrate day of the dead. The regions that have celebrated long periods of time and celebrate it in the most authentic manner are Michoacán and Oaxaca, which is why Coco is heavily inspired by those two regions. While other places like Mexico City only started the celebration of Día de los Muertos a couple of years ago. Shame that she didn't know the story of La llorona and I know it varies between regions but I'm from the north and my family told me that La llorona is a woman who is looking for her children after she herself drowned them in the river and people say that you can hear her crying and screaming "aaaay mis hijos" at night, mainly on roads near mountains and rivers.

I really loved all these videos but sadly that "La Llorona" part wasn't correct. Yes we have a scary story about a lady who kills her children and now she's searching for them afterlife, but this song is telling a story about a man who sings to his wife after he has to leave her to fight in the war. He never came back, but he left a letter to her, and it became this song, how he met her and what she means to him. At least that is the version I know about this song. Anyway, I really love to see Mexican culture videos and how he really seems to like to learn about our culture. Hope to see more. Thank you!

I remember how the llorona story was used by parents and family to get their little kids to come back inside and not stay out too late because the llorona was looking for kids to replace the ones she drowned in the spur of the moment after becoming heartbroken and in tbe way it's her punishment. But Idk if it's all folklore because I kid you not one time at around 12am in the morning in mexico we had all gone to bed and suddenly the dogs started barking so angrily and rabidly growling and soon you hear a woman wailing. I just remeber my aunt saying stay in bed and dont look out the window. You bet my ass stayed under the covers😂😂😂.

Before the movie came out we had the pleasure at our University to meet Lalo Alcaraz who was hired by Pixar to consult on Coco, and also he voiced a character. It was a pleasure to see him and know about the controversy which was they were trying to trade mark the word " day of the dead" which meant nobody could celebrate the Day of the dead or mention it. He stepped up for not only for Mexico but other countries who also celebrate Day of the Dead in Latin America/world. He is a very talented cartoonist. He allowed us to see some of his work as well and ask questions.

It seems to me that the story of the weeping woman seems to date back to the 1500s, a priest wrote about the history, pre-conquest of the Spanish, of the laments of a woman that were heard at night and said something like "children we have to go" and "where will I take you?" however this was taken by the natives as a warning or omen of the arrival of the Spanish. From there, different versions of the story have emerged in different regions of Mexico and the U.S.A. On the other hand, the song (although there are also several versions) seems to me that speaks of the pain of heartbreak (of a woman having been abandoned by her husband). In the end, this is just an urban legend. 🤷‍♀️

Show notes from a Mexican: - The dog she said it was cute, it’s a xoloitzcuintle. It’s a dog breed from Mexico and they’re supposed to be spiritual guides. In Mexica mythology out underworld has many circles and you have to travel through it to reach peace and one of the first test is crossing a river, which you won’t be able to do it if you were mean to animals while you were alive. If you were a decent human being, then a xoloizcuintle will help you reach the other side✨ - at 5:53 a lot of families celebrate Día de Muertos making an altar in their homes but the traditional way is to go to the graveyard decorate it and celebrate it your loved ones. It’s a really happy and warm tradition to remember our loved ones in a not sad way. - 5:23 ofc not all of Mexico looks like that, there are places that they do but also we have “normal” cities and urbanization BUT a lot of the places that look like that are called “Pueblos Mágicos” it’s a title given by the government which makes them touristic places, the place has to have historical attributes, symbolism and a lot of stuff that make them super valuable to preserve our cultural richness Guanajuato is a Pueblo Mágico, really beautiful btw, I absolutely love it, I wholeheartedly recommend Guanajuato, Guadalajara, Merida and San Miguel Allende to go pk a vacation, some of my favorites I’ve had the fortune to visit. (San Miguel Allende > Merida > Guanajuato for me, just bc Guanajuato is so popular that it gets really crowded :( ) - La Llorona is a scary story about a woman that lost her kids to a river and now she goes by rivers screaming looking for her kids. Btw let me brag, I’m from Veracruz if you look “La Bruja Xcaret” you’ll see a beauty performance of a traditional dance from my state (sorry, I’m really really proud of my heritage)

La llorona song is not related with the leyend, is a song that talks about a beautiful woman, that Worked as a mourner ( people hired to cry in funerals to show more sorrow for the Lost) and acompany the corpse from the Home to the cementery, until the end of the ceremony 9 days later. That way the man Saw her coming out of a church, and talk about cementery, also when said take me to the river, it is because usually, llover used to date There to avoid public exibition of love. And maybe do somthing else.😜

Reading the comments I see also the lack of knowledge about the song. This does not refer to the woman's leyend that killed her sons by drowning them and kidnapps children . The song of "La Llorona" is a traditional Mexican son that describes a story of love and pain, which was popularized in the times of the Mexican Revolution, the song was written and born in the Zapotec community of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec in the state of Oaxaca. Is the story of a young man from Tehuantepec, that went to a party in the neighboring community called Juchitán, were he met a girl who left the church wearing the famous regional costume called huipil. When he got the approval of her parents to marry her, the revolution blew in Oaxaca (between the years 1911 and 1912). When they were saying goodbye to each other, she was crying because she knew she will never see his husband again. So he called her "Llorona" because she would not stop crying. The young man went to war but never returned, some time later a friend of both returned to the town and gave her a letter. The extracts of that letter are some of the lyrics that are on the song. The young widow cried all the time for that letter, and she never married again because she hoped to meet her loved one in heaven. The story was written as a local folk song and also it has been modified and interpreted by many authors but Chavela Vargas version has become the most famous. But inspite of being modified the extracts of the letter still remains on the song. Traditions and folklore are very important to maintain please at least know the right origins about our Mexican culture.

When the movie came out a lot of my friends asked me if people in Oaxaca city (in the south part of Mexico) celebrated the same way as in the movie and yes our traditions are really alike, at least in the way I has been taught, also Disney sent people here to learn more, for example the "alebrijes" that are shown in the movie like the dog and the tiger has their origins here in Oaxaca, also the song La Llorona is from here and has a lot of different versions
