The earring only being on the right side means someone is gay thing came from earlier decades in America when people couldn't be out publicly. It was a sign to other gay people that that person was also gay. My parents told me there was a saying back in the day: "Left is right (meaning correct) and Right is wrong (it's bad to be gay)" Thank goodness we are much more knowledgable now

The butt hitting rule is hilarious to me because 90% of the straight (even birderline homophobic) dudes at our school do this and worse (nipple pinching, pretending to kiss, joking about sleeping with each other’s dads). It’s fascinating tbh Edit: By hilarious, I mean ironic to the point of surreality because so many guys who would actually (probably) perpetrate a hate crime against a gay kid here do things that could be considered actual gay activity, for jokes or not. It seems like in Korea, skinship is really common amongst friends of the same gender. In the states, it's usually only girls who do. But even then, it depends on the individuals. I know in my group of friends, we were never touchy-feely. We often hug for greetings and departures, but we've never held hands or kissed each other on the cheeks. I mostly use skinship with my close family members.

8:49 I think its called skinship. In Korea there's pda amongst guys and it's not seen as gay. They are quick to give compliments on appearance if another guy looks nice. Im American and when I first got into kpop I was so confused because I've never seen guys heavy into pda on camera. I would think 2 guys were gay in a group then I would see those guys all over the other guys. Now I realize it's the culture. In America the lines are CLEARLY drawn. Like holding eye contact for 3 seconds means your down for the get down.

I think it’s definitely in the eyes for girls too. I can tell when a girl is just complimenting me or when she’s interested. Their eyes linger more, especially if they start looking at your lips a lot. If it’s just a glance it isn’t a big deal but if you find someone attractive you’re more likely to gaze at their lips often 😊

8:46 it's called groupism, and there's a lot of social closeness and lack of personal boundaries in many Asian countries like Korea and Japan. Not sure about China, but I'm sure it's similar there because it tends to have a lack of personal space too (population numbers and use of space for housing). I'm still always surprised at my J students (junior high) and how much they touch each other, sometimes the guys sitting on top of each other or hugging each other which is clearly not done in the US as much. Maybe it's more common in the US now?? There's also hitting among J students, even on butts lol.
@megwhite6295
@megwhite6295 2 жыл бұрын
This is so interesting! I think it possibly also has something to do with how a lot of western countries are very individualistic and promote independence and making something of yourself entirely by yourself and not relying on (or thinking too much about) others, whereas a lot of eastern countries have a more collectivist culture where you rely on others to help you out and in turn are also expected to look after and support others in whatever way, and group cohesion comes above individual needs or wants. There is obviously pros and cons to both cultures but I feel like this could go some way in explaining the differing behaviours.

Thanks. This is enlightening. A few of the things they mentioned I had also picked up as a straight person observing gay friends and colleagues before and after they came out so back in the day I would say my gaydar was pretty darn good. Sometimes i can tell even from a video or even a photograph. Another thing is those who havent come out tend to have limited social media presence to their friends and family (meaning no soc media account or if there is one it is inactive or dead simply because they actually have another secret account where they conduct their secret activities and they tend to post very expicit sexual stuff in them too or meet others using these accounts. There is a network amongst their community and they tend to want to rent houses together or move around job circles using this network. Those who havent come out then to be opaque and vague about their social activities in regular conversations. At work esp in female dominated industry like mine you will find the male bosses hiring attractive younger male subordinates and that is usually an indication if other things isnt yet obvious enough. The checking other guys out, esp lingering eye contact is also a dead giveaway. Even for split second longer as generally straight men never catch each other's eyes nor do they tend to rubberneck other guys on the street. No matter how good looking or well built.

10:23 I had this happened to me once too at work. Im not out to my colleagues but I act a little gay sometimes, and this guy (who acts like typical straight handsome popular guy) kept staring at me and inviting me to team dinners and so on. Not to be narcissistic but yeah I’m somewhat forcibly good looking/average looking. But he always compliments pretty girls and checks them out in front of his colleagues. Then one time during a team dinner we sat together and he purposely placed his knee against mine for a good 7-8 minute and throughout the whole time he was throwing glances at me to see my reaction. But Im the type to be extremely shy around my crushes, so I didn’t really react much to it except to leave my leg there so our legs would stay in contact. After that night things didn’t really progress much though he did continue to pay attention to me etc. we were reshuffled into different departments (our company was huge MNC) and we slowly lost contact. 4.5 years later we’re both in different companies now and I still think about him from time to time lol

As an openly BI person, I do recognize a lot of these things with gay men. I, myself, do the limp wrist, rolling eyes, skinship touchy feely, and also recognize longer than average eye contact. I have been doing that since as young I have one piercing on my right year only. I also have very long hair. I am very in touch with my feminen side. While I find men very sexually attractive, I lean most toward Asian women. I wound up moving to Korea and I now I am with my fiance (of over 3 years), who is a lovely Korean woman. But, listening and watching this made me chuckle. All of these gentlemen are very handsome and carry themselves well. :)

This seem wild to me. Cause even as a bi guy a lot of these seem pretty normal to me and I see it between my straight friends, coworkers, and random people like online and tik tok who identify as straight. But it also depends on the setting. I've been called handsome at like church and stuff, but yeah among friends and peers its more common just to say "you looks good today" or compliment their outfit. Skinny jeans were a huge trend a few years ago and I even had a straight friend trying to get me to buy a pair for myself cause he said I didn't dress in style enough. My pastor even wore them sometimes. They just weren't for me personally. I see straight guys with earings in either ear or both now. I even see straight guys with the one dangly earing and eyebrow piercings. So I font think of it as a sign anymore these days. I don't really pay much attention to peoples bang so I don't have to much of a say in this one. I share headphones with my straight friends all the time tho. And I've seen my straight friends do it with each other, and straight coworkers do it. Pop music could be a bit of a sign like they said if there's a lot of like Arianna Grande, Lady Gaga, or like they claim to be a Barb. But just in general or mixed in with other types of music I don't think its anything particularly gay these days. Now asking a guy to go to the restroom sounds super strange to me and thats the only one on this list I agree with. But not even so much its gay, just more strange. And I can't tell you how many times straight guys have slapped my butt or talked about how big it is since high school and playing sport up to coworkers over a decade later. Some where gay or questioning, but most are straight and its like a joke. One time I even went to my friends party and was meeting his girlfriend for the first time and he squeezed my butt cheeks right in front of her 😂😂

About the air pods I think it's because people who are a bit older still think of it as sharing wired earphones instead of bluetooth. That would be more romantic because it's kinda like a literal connection and you gotta stay close and move carefully because of the length of the wire. Aldo it's been used as a romantic thing in pop culture ever since ear phones became a thing

Almost everything they said is quite normal in Spain, everyone does it. For me is weird to say that depending on how you look like or what you do you are gay or you could be. Here you don't know anything until you ask, because even when you think someone might be lgbtq you could be so wrong

Hearing that in Korea, listening to mostly girl groups was considered gay was surprising because in my school (Australian), most of the guys that were into kpop prefered listening to and stanning girl groups while the girls were into a mix of both guy and girl groups. Similarly with the Americans saying it's not common to hit each other's butts, it was very common in my school and it was even more common in public schools particularly among the white boys (my school was like 2/3's white). It was very much joked that this was like the straightest thing a guy could do

6:14 As a lesbian I can confirm. I stayed over at a friend's house and we snuggled on her couch watching anime with our fingers interlaced, snuggled to sleep in her bed, then when we woke up she went downstairs to make us breakfast and when she saw me come into the kitchen she came over and gave me a kiss. Then we ate breakfast shoulder to shoulder on the couch and she gave me a goodbye kiss on the lips, but I'm not sure if she's gay or just really friendly.

This was fun to watch. All are beautiful, but Von is just gorgeous, I saw him on tiktok a few times. US is more individualistic minded, versus many countries love doing things with friends. It doesn’t have to hold meaning Most of these have shocked me. I didn’t know some of them Sharing airpods? Come on. It is just a device. Earrings and specific placements have been part of many cultures. In ancient turkic cultures earring placement on men had meanings (he is an only son. He is an only child in the family and etc). Skinship is acceptable is considered friendly among same gender friends. Men or women. Depends on the culture too, some cultures are too touchy feely in general.

In Germany the right ear is also the "gay" ear. I found out about that because my boyfriend really wanted to pierce his ears and he first did the left ear, for this reason, but since the left ear got infected pretty bad he had to take it out and got his right ear piearced instead. He does plan on piercing his left ear again tho and will probably start wearing earrings on both sides then. Also he is actually bi, but since we are together he initially didn't want to provoke to get hit on by guys because of the earing xD

It's very interesting to learn about this kind of topic because so many of these "gay signals" were actual signals for queer people back in the days when you couldn't outright say "I'm gay" so it's a part of the culture!

Just a thing want to say being a bisexual and gay is a different thing. If ur a bi u are interested in both men and women and if any boy is lookin at another boy it doesn't always mean he is gay. And also A boy can love another boy without being called gay and a girl can love another girl without being called lesbian. Love is love and love allows everyone to love. ❤and m also a Bisexual and i respect every gender ❤
