This is very helpful. While I’m beginning to understand the use of LUTs with FCP, I’m still unsure of how to capture video using LUTs with a Ninja Atomos monitor and either a Panasonic G9 or Sony A7 IV. Can you point me to either your tutorial (free or paid) on capturing video with LUTs or other KZbinrs that can help me. Thanks

I have a really important question I'd like to ask you. On a camera channel, someone told me that it's better that I don't use LUT's unless I have a 10bit camera. Most camera's I think are 8 bit...but you didn't mention the 8/10bit thing, so now I'm lost. To put this in context, here's what they said: "Generally, to use LUTs well, it is better to have 10 bit, although I know many do use LUTs at 8 bit. Adjusting the picture yourself instead of using a preset which is what a LUT is, is more subtle so adjustments can be done in smaller amounts which means less pulling around of the picture = less picture noise, especially in low lights. Zoom in and you might start to see the blocks appearing. That is the low bitrate. LUTs can be too aggressive and when the picture recompresses, it starts to break up into blocks. If you’re not specifically looking for it, you might miss it." Do you find this to be accurate? I've been scrambling around trying to find a 10bit camera thinking this is what I have to do. You guys could do me a big favor by answering this. Thank you!
@markspencer31042 жыл бұрын
I generally agree with this statement. Camera LUTs are designed to be applied to LOG footage, and LOG footage really should be 10-bit. Creative LUTs on the other hand can be designed for Rec. 709 footage and it really depends on the LUT. But yes 10-bit is always better when it comes to being able to push a grade.

How to Find Blackmagic Camera LUTs? FCP has a couple of apparently very old camera LUTs for BMD cameras. Yet BMD has had periodic changes. Currently, shooting ProRes "Film" on BMD cameras uses their "Gen 5" color science but I can't seem to find any posted camera LUTs on their site. Do you know of a way to get the BMD Gen 5 (or Gen 4 for older recordings) Luts to import into FCP?
@rippleguys2 жыл бұрын
I can't recommend Joel Famula's luts enough, and he's built them for the BMD's cinema cameras as well (not just Sony) - www.joelfamularo.com/colour
@rippleguys2 жыл бұрын
One way to do this, is to locate the luts folder in DaVinci Resolve and copy the LUTs into a new folder on your Mac, then import that folder as a set of BMD Luts

Most of the LUTS are created for Rec.709 - the places you downloaded them from should also have to you this. Easy way to find out. If you apply them tor Rec2020 and they look wrong. then they were created for Rec.709

Here I was thinking you were going to tell us about LUTs without using a LUT... drives me nuts seeing non-corrected footage.

Great video! I’m having issues saving transition presets? Is there no option?
@rippleguys2 жыл бұрын
what do you mean transition presets?
@michaelocunningham2 жыл бұрын
@@rippleguys In the same way that one can create an effects preset, I thought it would be possible to save the settings of a transition as well rather than having to alt + left click or copy + paste to keep the same parameters.
@rippleguys2 жыл бұрын
@@michaelocunningham Not possible with transitions. What you could do is open the transition in Motion, modify it your liking, save it, then you have a custom transition.
