It is funny that Luxembourg and medival Lithuania both held the title of Grand Duchy, while Lithuania was one of the largest states on the continent and Luxembourg was and is one of the smallest
@HistoryHustle4 жыл бұрын
Indeed, interesting. I'm not that well known when it comes down to the specifics of a Grand Duchy.

@@HistoryHustle The Royal hierarchy goes King, Queen, Prince, Princess, Duke and Duchess. Pretty much anyway as there are Barons and Baroness and Lords etc. A Grand Duke is usually the highest ranked noble outside of the actual Royal family. He is also the prime aristocrat in any Grand Duchy. There are many grand duchies within the remaining monarchies but much of the previous power has been given to Democratic institutions. I'm using English titles here of course. The current Duchy of Lancaster is Queen Elizabeth 2..

The invasion of Luxembourg in WW1 almost dragt the Netherlands into the war, because the Netherlands garanted the neutrality of Luxembourg before the war.

If the Netherlands had entered the war, they would have been occupied by German troops, too. So they prefered not to enter which was a wise decision.

It's weird standing on the bridge that is the boundary to three countries deep in the Ardennes forest. Members of the royal family of Luxembourg by tradition have served in the Irish Guards (part of HM Household Division) UK, indeed they have produced several commanding officers. I could share some stories about the Luxembourg Chief of the Defence Staff (90s), but it's not the place. Nice chap though. Good video about an interesting place.
