For those who don’t know, our trams have also a name. It’s Siggy, derived from Siegfried, the founder of our country. The name had been chosen during a name giving event, where people could propose a name for it and later people could vote for their favorite name and Siggy won. I rode it several times since the first day of operation. The system is still continuing to grow. For now the trams run between Luxexpo Kirchberg and Bonnevoie Highschool every three minutes.

OK, so in some of the latter parts of the video, the trams appear to be moving without the presence of overhead power wiring and supporting poles, and the pantographs are not deployed upwards. And I do not really see evidence of a third rail on the tracks in these sections, either. Are the trams therefore moving on stored battery power? Or compressed natural gas, perhaps?
@bewatch_0 Жыл бұрын
Nice transportation 🙂
@RahulJoshi-di3mm4 жыл бұрын
How they are powered? I see no overhead lines. Are via tram tracks?
@hpxavier3 жыл бұрын
In fact it’s a very interesting system. Check the beginning of the video and you’ll see the pantograph coming down the powerline before the tram starts moving. Then you see another tram stopping and you see the pantograph going up and touching the powerline… this was a deliberate decision from the planners of the line. When the tram is riding inside the city, to avoid spoiling our architecture, they decided to make the tram run on batteries; for that reason the trams MUST remain for 20 seconds at each stop to recharge the batteries via contacts on the ground. When the tram needs to pick up speed and is riding out of the city center, the designers decided a powerline on those areas was less of a problem. By doing so, the tram uses the electricity from above and can make shorter stops. Hope it makes sense!

What I find interesting here is the technical possibility of this tram to run with or without overhead power lines, quickly charging its batteries during the stops, by means of power plates on the ground. Unfortunately, this is not shown on this video.

At 1:20 you can see an overhead connection to a power wire. Are some areas of the line equipped with overhead wires but not others? You mentioned the trains operate on batteries and they charge while stopped. (I think I can see the plates in the ground that are likely part of that process.) Is that how it works? Nice video...wish we had more trains here in the US. :(
