I learned this going to an Ivy League college. You almost never saw brand names on anyone's clothes, but the materials and workmanship on what they had was top notch and well fitted. I was a scholarship kid, but I learned to have fewer things that were of higher quality with what little buying power I had.

My dad taught me this lesson in the mid-90s when I was a small boy. We were at a work party, and he asked me who in the room was by far the richest. I looked around and picked the guy in the nicest suit. Ends up it was a guy in a polo shirt who was playing with his wedding ring on the table. The lesson was "the richest and most powerful man in the room can wear whatever he wants." The suit is just another uniform.

I appreciate high quality non designer items because I don’t need a designer label to boost my self esteem or to show it off to the outside world. Quality apparel fits better and lasts longer then fast fashion. I like to be smart with my money.

I remember watching a tv show in the 90s where it showed wealthy men having their suits and shirts made to fit or bespoke in Saville Row UK, and women buying sweaters in Ireland the same way. They had their handbags hand tooled, and they were absolutely beautiful made to last and very classic pieces. The prices were out of this world, but they were beautiful articles.

I live in a neighborhood that most houses cost 3M+ euros and I still see plenty of LV bags. Not many Guccis, Pradas etc though. Hermes and Chanel are also pretty common in places I usually go. But the most common are Delvaux, LV and Hermes I believe. I live in Belgium (and summers in South of France) so I’m not sure about other countries. I was born in Brazil. There still pretty common to wear logos and brands all the time. So, I guess it depends of where you live.

It is true designer brands mostly market their logo material to the middle class and use models, actors, and rappers to do so. But usually they have some indiscreet pieces which the wealthy will buy and of course the wealthy tend to be the only ones able to afford actual couture as opposed to ready-to-wear.

Most common people do not aspire to look like they come from old money families the way they did in the Gilded Age. Most of us lower classes are much more inspired by musicians, actors, and celebrities as well as "new money" individuals like Jeff Bezos, Mark Zuckerberg, Evan Spiegel, and Elon Musk than we are by "old money" people from the Murdoch, Maxwell, Sulzberger, and Redstone families satirized in Succession. And even in this set, Murdoch's former wives Jerry Hall and Wendy Deng both have been seen with Hermes bags. It is true most wealthy people (and common people too) will not choose to deck themselves out in logos and bling, but the idea that the old set are completely impervious to anything overtly luxurious in their fashion isn't true either.

Ralph Lauren actually makes good stuff. I would only buy their clothes with the small logos though. If you’re really wealthy then you know you have it. Also if you are really wealthy then you can afford to have your clothes custom made for you like John Lobb, Hunstman, Anderson & Sheppard, etc. There are also a lot of “blue collar millionaires” that own trucking companies, construction companies, or something like that and are loaded with money but they have no need for fancy clothes. When I see someone with a Louis Vuitton bag, I just think it was a dumb purchase and more than likely they don’t have the financial intelligence or self discipline to build wealth. I just shake my head in silence. Don’t buy clothing you don’t need but if you do need something then buy for quality and durability so you don’t have to buy it again or at least not for a long time. Some of the nicer brands have a service where you can send in the clothes and get them repaired when they wear out.

I have noticed that expensive clothes are a nicer colour dye. I try to buy in the sales as i don't have much but i still prefer quality over quantity as there may be longevity in the purchase. Also, preloved accessories and clothes are more justifiable. I like some luxury brands but i like high street too!

I think there are a few misconceptions ... 1) Designer items don't all have labels/branding on it. Of course many do and there is that market for it. But there is plenty that doesn't and people buy it for the cuts, fabrics, colours, design etc. I have many Gucci, Margiela, Saint Laurent, Dior etc pieces and none of them have a visible logo. I but them for the design, fabric, heritage, feel etc. So bracketing all designer buyers as logo chasers is wrong. 2) Who ultimately wants to look like the bland 'genuine' mega rich anyway, it's all very basic and 'boring' to be honest. I think people enjoy that more fun exuberant Gucci, Chanel zone anyway, it's more fun to be honest :) rather than the more stoic and staid Loro Piana in browns, neutrals etc. ie people buy into what excites them, what feels great for them, and sure a little showing off too perhaps. 3) Which leads me to the third point, which is that I don't necessarily think people are trying to look like the mega uber rich as all these youtube videos suppose, but instead are trying (and succeeding) to look like the 'middle' designer customer, ie the Gucci, Dior, Chanel, LV audience. They know they are the upper middle or aspirational working class grouping who just likes the little luxuries in life. To belong to the uber rich takes way more than clothes anyway, it needs the full package, the bentley, the exquisite jewellery, the mansion, the mannerisms, the similar upper circle around them etc.

Yeah but no, here's the thing many luxury brands from armani to dior, to ralph lauren to margiela cannot hold to the banner of heritage, quality and prestige to sell their pieces when organisations and investigations such as BoF and Good on You have rigorous evidence of their exploitation of garment workers (including in Italy) in unsafe conditions that extend to forced labour and child labour. The equivalent low ratings can also be found for environmental practices. I mean if we are looking at purchasing quality, sustainable, ethical fashion then forget fashion labels like gucci etc and look at independent ethical businesses like Reformation or Fair Trade Winds

The one thing also of why some things are more commonly searched in the lesser areas is there may not be a store with those brands in the nearest town or even in some of the cities. Compared with NYC, LA, SF, Houston, Denver where its short drive to those area or more accessible in some big box stores. Its definitely that way here in the Nashville metro, even in the more affluent area I live in of Franklin you have to go online to order it because they don't have it, or we don't have one here. But the Ralph Lauren brand has different tiers of clothes also, I'm sure most are not buying the $500-1500 sweaters from purple label or collection for women or nik naks for the house. Plus some of this stuff last forever like the higher quality jackets and don't go out of style fast either. One thing I've been looking at lately is the quality in comparison to the more normal brands that are charging pretty hefty price now within $15-40 of those nicer brands for some things. I also am going for the quiet luxury of things since I don't feel like being mugged or robbed, Ferragamo and Lori Piano are some of the best at it. There's nothing wrong with expanding your wardrobe and updating your style, Just know where you're going to be and for the occasion. Every man or woman needs some nice clothing, they have sales often also at Saks, Neiman, and bloomingdales half off or more sometimes just gotta be patient.

I think that generalizing all lower income people buying luxury to look rich is very pretentious. I can only speak for myself. My salary is considered a low-income one, and yet I buy luxury goods (most of them are second-hand for sustainability reasons) but I don't like the all over monogram bags or logo t-shirts and I buy the more natural low key items, some people simply wish to have these otems because of quality and history of the brand and I think that paying 9k for a coat is ridiculous!!!!, so the rich buy "quite luxury" fashion, but they drive the very fleshy cars and huge houses, so to each their own. People need to stop focusing on what others are doing or buying and concentrate on their own lives. There are worst things happening in the world than who bought LV or Loro Piana. Just my opinion.

In the late 90’s I read an article, if you could afford only one expensive bag it should be the LV Speedy 30. In 2003 I paid a bit over $500. I’ve used it a lot and it’s still beautiful. I'm genx and I'm old fashioned, but when I was young I learned that designer goods are goods made by a designer and created by hand by workers who have line of sight supervision by the designer herself or himself. A wealthy person goes to a designer and is shown several designs, and then the wealthy person purchases one of the items and it is custom tailored for them. That is designer fashion. Anything made in a factory and sold in a store is not sufficient. Anything mass produced and sold in a store is just a commercial item, not a designer fashion item.

It goes both ways because rich people try to dress like poor people now. Wearing Jordan’s, Air Force 1’s, Timberland boots paired with New era fitted caps, hoodies and varsity jackets and bubble coats used to be considered “ghetto” and low class. Now melanin deficient individuals from upper middle class and upper class suburban environments have gentrified sneaker culture and streetwear in the past few years. “Poor people” started wearing Gucci, Prada, Burberry, Balenciaga etc. en masse in the past few years because there is pressure for poor people of color to be better dressed than upper middle class and rich suburban mostly white people who traditionally dressed like Mark Zuckerberg and Steve Jobs up until a few years ago.

Did you do any research about this at all? I spent 7 years in a luxury goods and 23 years in consumer package goods market research analysis. Your statements are absolutely baseless Also in regards to luxury purchasing the United States Represents less than 20% of the entire world sale of luxury goods. At least 60-70 percent comes from china Also rich people are buying the stuff that has the brand names written all over it.

The rich buy QUALITY. Fabrics made of high quality fibers...wool, silk, linen. Shoes, bags and accessories made of full grain leather, not 'genuine' leather. They have their clothes tailor made or if it's off the rack they have it altered to fit properly. The rich DO NOT flaunt logos unless there is money in it for them. Posers wear 'designer' clothes with logos prominently displayed.

First of all, buy what you love---not like. So many times ppl buy things then it sits in the closet for years or worn once or twice. If you react to something, it means you love it. As for monogram, that's a personal choice. Personally, I don't consider monogram as style, it screams I paid this much for this. Style is what you put together that is personal.

Whenever I buy something deapite of the price, I always pay up-front. No loans, credit card debt, nothing. Never even have a credit card cause I don't need it. Buying these stuff is like investing money with no returns. Period.
