I will concur some.we have a family friend (billionaire)… lives in the pelican hill estate mansions along with several properties across the country. She has a few real chanel, birkins, LVs, etc. Like a handful or so. BUT has several fakes too. She finds it dumb to overspend on those types of things rather than real estate, actual diamonds, business investments, etc. Makes sense I guess from that perspective. No one would ever expect her fake Kelly is fake since her 5 carat diamond and lambo is real. Save that 15k and go invest it? Maybe that’s why she’s a billionaire 🤷🏻‍♀️

I don’t think the actual brands are counterfeiting, but I do think there are reasons why we’re seeing counterfeit quality meet and even exceed European brands: 1) Chinese workers are being brought to France and Italy with visas and even in boats offshore to produce in those countries so the brands can say they’re made in Europe while paying less for labor. Then those Chinese workers see their visas expire, they have to leave, and a new group is brought in. Eventually you have thousands of Chinese nationals trained in European leather making. They can then seek employment at counterfeiters. 2) A lot of elements of some brands and bags are being made in China, and only the finishing elements are done in Europe, so you then have independent Chinese factories who know the brands’ blueprints AND have workers trained to meet European standards. Once the contract ends, all they have to do is source leather (easy) and branded hardware (the only part where copyright infringement comes in) and they simply don’t stop making the bags. 3) Technology has made it easier than ever to source where the authentic leathers come from and obtain factory firsts and seconds, or obtain a similar leather or reproduce them if you can’t. It’s also easy to 3D print casts and molds for branded hardware. 4) New pricing strategies encourage counterfeits by making them more profitable. The further an item is priced from its cost of production, the more profitable reproducing the bag becomes. For example, when Chanel flaps were $1k, if they cost $150 to knock off and the customer will only pay 1/4 of the retail price for it, you can only make $100 per bag. But now that they’re $10k and prices are essentially divorced from the cost of production, if you can reproduce one perfectly for $500 and sell it for 1/5 of the retail price, that’s now $1500 in profit. The higher brands push prices, the more profitable 1:1 super fakes become. 5) Social media has increased brand and product exposure, simultaneously increasing the prime market for counterfeit goods, i.e. people who are aware of the goods but can’t comfortably afford them.

It is legal to make 80-90% of a product in China and finish a piece in France and still call it made in France, this is why the made in France tags are soo important to these brands. Because we believe the prestige. However, it is definitely happening with some brands that at high end but lack some quality control. Now is Chanel doing this? I’m not sure. If Hermes doing this? I’m not sure. I doubt they would let the public know. However, Chanel quality has been going down. Lv quality has gone down. Etc. I think what people try to game, is the ratio to what they spend verse what the cost to make the item is. The markup is ridiculous. Especially with Hermes, people want the prestige of Hermes and handmade item, but also being able to access it financially as well as just general accessibility. However, it’s ironic because the prestige is kept by keeping the supply low.

As I've said before, fake sites are even duping vintage Chanel so buying vintage designs isn't safe either. I've heard rich people say that buying only real and obsessing over that is middle-class behaviour because they're trying to distinguish themselves from the poor (status signalling) but the rich just see it as "keeping up appearances". So it's a classism thing. With the risk of robbery, arguably it isn't worth it anymore but women in particular are expected to have a 'uniform' and well done on gaming that system!

I am in NYC and people in NYC wear dupes..robberies are happening everyday where people are snatching a bag off your shoulder or ripping a chain off your neck...some of these bags i have seen that are Gucci fakes the only way you can tell is the inside tags and who will let someone look into their bags..its the same with expensive jewellery people buy a dupe for vacation or to wear outside....once you live in a certain zip code your hair and nails done people assume your bags are real..people forget leather is leather all they do is throw on the logo at the end...LV has went up crazy with their prices who in their right mind want to spend 10k on a bag....

First of all, stressing about not getting a Birkin in a particular color-way makes me sad for our society. I love my bags, but what privilege that *this* is what causes stress in someone's life. This has been a very existential video, what is reality...? Although the theory about luxury houses participating in the fakes market would be surreal, I can't believe they actually would. I had my feelings about reps in the past was put off by the idea of a brand controlling me that much that I’d pay money for the fake rather than the real. I’d rather buy a cheaper yet quality alternative from a lesser brand. But now that a fakes are being sold in store, their quality is better than the real it truly makes my wonder what is the point? I think it can be a quiet fu to brands who no longer value selling quality products to former loyal customers. How absurd is it that their target base, those that can actual afford the product many times over are not even loyal. Lol. My stance may be changing as far as superficial integrity goes, however there is a safety component to buying real. Nothing can be verified safe or healthy on the blackmarket. Buying counterfeit supports crime organizations and human trafficking efforts and I could never be ok with that.

Teach the kids! Fake only applies to eyelashes and a bad synthetic wig. If you don’t own a fake bag innNYC you ain’t really a fashionista. The thrill of finding a fake that fools the folks in the brand boutique…you haven’t lived. I have real items and a fake Fendi and Chanel that are better than the real deal. I have auth and fake bags - lots of auth Hermes and rep Hermes (not into Chanel), auth BV, Loewe, Goyard and some reps. Lets be real the luxury brands do not have to "fake" their stuff - the materials are out on the market. Chinese manufacturers can buy the same hides from tanneries, the same waxed linen thread, the same french leather making tools (I have a few myself when I dabbled in leather making). What the "fakes" are doing is somehow getting the leather making expertise - did they work in France or Italy? did they go to schools because the upper tier counterfeits? You can't be an unskilled factory worker.

I don’t know why but if I use a Chanel lipstick instead of a Rimmel one, the experience of using a nicer product, the packaging, the formula… just makes me feel a touch more glam. I really like how you see this issue! When many people are playing justice warriors in same time same people are buying and using items made by cheap/ slave labor. You can custom made almost anything ( bags / clothes/ shoes) and support small business owners. I am going to courses that teach you to make your own shoes . I had suggested before that if these companies can't beat them, I can imagine they would join them. Referring to paying resellers premiums for rare bags, instead of these constant price increases, the luxury houses can join the resale market and open an eBay store and sell their goods there for a premium 🤪

I think it has weight to keep the name even for the replicas. Look at the luxury watches with the Tudor brand for example. Rolex wanted to make an official Rolex watch but at a lower price but with the same quality. The problem is that now Tudor is called "the poor man's Rolex." So the brands putting out merch as counterfit makes total sense because you are still wearing the brand and no one will know. And probably encourage newbies to go buy a real bag at the store but have the lower quality.

And the sad part? I LOVE my Tudor watches - I have 2 authentic ones.. LOVE them... I have a rep Rolex *LOL* I wanted the candy pink Oyster Perpetual and it is impossible to get and I am not going to play a Birkin game with an AD by buying crap I dont want - and I am not going to pay reseller prices. If it is legal to claim a bag you sell in your store is leather - even if only 1% of it is actually real leather, then you cannot claim any legalities or morality where fakes / counterfeits are concerned - ALL is fair in that case.

China does nothing but steal ideas from the entire world and entice ppl to buy cheaper. As long as the world allows China not to respect the IP of the brands, this will keep happening. On the other hand, bags are so expensive now that as a consumer, even if I can afford it, I would look like a fool not using that money for investments instead. So I can understand playing the game to find a super fake. This is a sign that consumers no longer find value. Luxury houses better take heed.

What about Designer Outlets that sell “Outlet Only” products? They essentially are creating lower quality (cheaper version) items that are for those who can’t afford the boutique items. I think designers are responsible for the counterfeit market. It’s sad how much quality went down for designers to gain more profit.

Imagine being attacked cause of an fake bag… Why then „show off“ in the first place? A thief woludnt spot your bag is fake, especially not in a stressy robbery situation. In some cases just stay lowkey, there is no need to „ball around“ all the time. Who playes with fire can get burned by it.

Although many would say they pay for the brand name, those parting with their cash DO care about quality and have high standards. With the nose dive in quality, hikes in prices, and unpredictable re-sell market flooded with reps, luxury bags no longer represent value for money (not to mention the hoop jumping and game playing that brands are instilling to control their customer base). More and more original customers will turn to reps and then the brands will have to rethink their brand, pricing and marketing strategy. The Hermes Birkin seems particularly vulnerable to repping within the original customer base. Why wait for months for the possibility of being "offered" a Birkin, buying Hermes products you don't particularly want, and then finally a Birkin in a colour that is your 3rd choice, when you can choose the exact schematics of a rep?

I think because it helps them have a market - its aspirational - you may see someone out in the crowd you kind of seems like they are in your same "class" and they are toting a Gucci so you save to buy that Gucci - whereas before if you only ever saw say Coach or Tory Burch you would throw your money there. It helps get continued customers for them.. the rich have always had a mixture. I had a very wealthy uncle who had some auth Rolex and fake ones... unabashed.

The brands did it to themselves; terrible quality and service and ridiculous prices. Now we know some are not even using real leather, there is less reason to buy the authentic. I have thought for a long time certain brands were behind their own counterfeits. The stories of child labor etc are not true either; I know someone who has traveled to these factories and they were high tech and well run.

These days I only pay full price for smaller brands that use full grain leather like Loewe, Polene, Songmont, etc. Their designs are so fun and playful. Firstly small brands do not mark up the prices like crazy. Secondly it's too costly to replicate an exact 1 to 1 match. They are not as prestigious in the traditional sense and lower resale value at the moment, but every time when I touch the leather they are so luxuriously comforting. It works for me 👍

I’ve seen 1:1 reps of Loewe and polene. In fact, my friend has a rep puzzle bag that she compared to the auth in store. I’ve even seen reps of coach and Tory Burch. So I would still be wary when buying preloved if you don’t want a replica.

If they’re made in the same factory by the same employees are they really fakes? If its the same quality or better is it really any different from the outlet bags made just for outlet which are produced by the lux brands for a separate revenue stream. I like to buy preloved but its going to be impossible to do that in the future. So selling & buying any bags will be impossible if no one knows what are fakes & what ones arn’t. Handbags will be devalued all together!!!

And perhaps some of these "fakes" are being made by former craftspeople of these brands who are now making them on their own.......? I saw a fake Lv utility bag recently - how could i tell it was fake? The quality and detail was way better than the one i tried in store. Also, look how many fake Lv prism bags came out before the originals hit the stores! Global sourcing means that factories are likely producing at least parts of the originals. Also check the third party suppliers to big conglomerates in italy and ask yourself of everyone in the supply chain is getting ethical treatment.....

I have both real and fake the real I buy are timeless and the fakes I buy are trendy. No way I would ever spend over 2k on a bag also. What does someone get out of paying 10k for a bag? It will not resell at that price if it’s used no matter how much people say they can resell it.

Keep in mind that there are tons of hides that H rejects because they don’t meet their standards. The average consumer isn’t always going to be able to see or even feel why this is. There’s nothing stopping counterfeiters from buying what H rejects. Someone has to. Additionally, some H leathers have machine-pressed grains, like Epsom, and I doubt there’s a shortage of those, because the pressing hides blemishes and allows lower quality hides to be used. That’s one reason even at H the pressed leathers cost less for the same item in natural grain leathers.
