If you lease a BMW for $700 a month for 4 years, you are paying $40,000. I bought mine 10 years old paying $7,000 for a car that was about $43,000 new. Original owner, always serviced at dealer, clean Carfax. I like the way BMW looks and performs.

So far I had to replace steering column $2500 and I have my abs light on which I need to take off the module and send in for repair $300. And power steering pump just went out. I also replaced the valve covers and spark plugs along with routine oil changes. I haven't had any engine reliability issues. So I'm still happy with the car.

In 2007 I bought a 2005 Audi TT 3.2L Quattro with DSG- returned from a lease by a woman driver with only 14k miles. It was $32k - little over half its original sticker. Absolutely beyond a doubt the best car I’ve ever owned. In 13 years of daily driving I’ve only ever had 2 repairs. A $45 brake light switch in year 2. And just recently it needed a new fuel pump. For maintenance it’s had 3 new sets of brake pads in 13 years, quite a few new tires, and just recently had new coils and plugs.... other than that, just oil, filters, and regular transmission and haldex service. The car looks as good as new, it’s interior is the best quality plastics and leather that still looks new despite being parked in the sun, and everything on the interior that looks like metal is actually real aluminum. The DSG transmission from 2005 has proven bulletproof. It gets 30 mpg because that torquey 6 allows it to shift into 6th at 35 mph. I know other Audi owners with similar experiences. I am sure that if my TT broke, it would be costly to repair, but I don’t care how costly it is to repair a car that almost never breaks. Besides... it’s the very best version of a truly iconic car- and fun as hell to drive. When it needs an engine rebuild and transmission overhaul, I would far rather spend 8 grand on that than buy some new piece of crap car.

0:31 I can agree. My mom used to have a 2009 Audi Q7. It was a beautiful car, with awesome craftsmanship, it was comfortable and had a nice ride. Everything felt premium and quality, until the master cylinder and the MMI console went and it costed close to 10 grand to fix. The Audi was my mom's dream car and she bought the car used, but she didn't have the money to maintain it. Unless you're a specialized mechanic, you should probably buy an Audi brand new rather than used. The car is well built, but it is expensive when a part breaks.

Scotty mentioned the 240DL. I bought one used in college with 100k miles. I immediately drove it on spring break from Ann Arbor to Key West. The car is heavy and the engine is underpowered but it ran forever. Had a tough time making it through the Kentucky mountains and had to downshift to make it up the hills. The car is a big hunk of heavy steel and lasts forever. Volvos are known however to have electrical problems that can be frustrating. My 240DL was a manual with an electronic button on the knob to shift into overdrive. That had to be repaired multiple times. Eventually I gave the car to my brother who drove it through college and he gave the car to his brother in law years later.

Scotty(and others), Have you ever thought about the cost of leasing vs. the cost of ownership? It is almost identical. Example: Let's take the average "low mileage" lease on an Audi today- 2019 A6 quattro: 479/month for 39 months+ $4974 due at signing= $23,655.00. That is ONLY for highly qualified people(in other words-rich). Are you telling me you think you will lose more than that if you owned it for more than 3-1/4 years? Car manufacturers came up with leasing as just another way for poor people to pretend they have money. As far as I can figure, they actually make more from leasing than they do from selling.

The comparative of diesel powered vehicles in the US vs Aus is interesting. Toyota recently stated they will no longer be selling the Landcruiser range with petrol powered V8 in Australia as the twin turbo diesels outsell the petrol 15 to 1. And the future of petrol powered Hilux range is also under a cloud as the turbo diesel again outsells the both the 4 and V6. Always great vids Scotty. Greetings from Woomera, South Australia 👍👍🇦🇺

We had some lousy diesel engine vehicles in the 1970s and 80s. That image unfairly hurt the market for diesels here. Now our EPA is cracking down harder on emissions controls, we're even less likely to see a resurgence in diesel.

@@Athonite We are lucky that very few badly engineered diesels made it to our shores, and the vehicles that failed to survive our environments quickly disappeared. Toyota has always dominanted commercial vehicle sales and have an excellent reputation for industrial strength reliability in both their Hilux and Landcruiser range. Comments on servicing. I have a 2004 Avalon and now am driving less than 4,000 miles a year in an urban area. It is counter intuitive that these are extremely rough driving conditions. It means doing early changes of fluids and not relying upon Toyota's service recommendations. You can calculate values. What is the sales tax, first year registration, and increased insurance costs of a 2020 Avalon? Or what is the price of putting in the questionable replacement transmission in a 2004 Avalon? Now compare either value to the cost of replacing all the fluids in a 2004 Avalon!

The cost to replace the radiator and other parts to repair it were far more than the car was worth. It was virtually worthless and he had to get rid of it. He got a 2010 Audi wagon to replace it. Hey Scotty Love your channel, but you’re wrong about this. I’ve driven German cars for the last 50 years. My experience is that they are much more reliable than most other cars. I’ll grant you that Toyotas and Hondas are very well-built and probably simpler in many cases, but there’s no way that the driving experience is worth that slight difference for me. Also, German cars are like any other cars. If you take care of them they will take care of you. Japanese are probably better at making cars for people that don’t take care of their cars.

SLAM he’s a hater and an ignorant. The thing he doesn’t understand about German cars is that 90% of the first owners of these cars don’t plan to keep them more than 4 years so they really don’t care about taking care of the car. It will be sold or exchanged by a newer model. So the second buyer will not get a well maintained vehicle. Most of old german cars are super reliable when they were owned by one owner. A Kia or Honda owner on the other hand will take care of his car since day 1 like if it was his son. Sorry for my broken English, it’s only my 4th language.

I had a Toyota Corolla for 10 years, it was affordable at the time a got it , brand new. Was it a good car - not really. It wasn’t breaking ( falling apart) every month but it was uncomfortable, tough ride. It offered nothing. It didn’t even have a Bluetooth ( 2009 model) Finally decided to make a change, gave it to my wife and got almost brand new BMW X3 2019 The difference is like day and night. You get what you pay for. I have all the luxury I want, it’s amazing ride, it’s functional, it’s beautiful car. Yes, it cost a bit more than the Corlolla but it’s well worth. I’m not worried about something going to break , every car breaks at some point , that’s why people invented warranty. I got extended 8 year (80000 mile ) for less than $2000. And why is he talking always about “ losing value “ ? Any car loses value , some faster than others, but it all depends. It’s about what the car offers you. And by any means, neither Toyota or Lexus 🙄 for that matter can offer anything better than BMW or Mercedes or Audi for that matter. Germany mr mechanic from Texas has tradition in engineering, and it doesn’t matter how much you bad mouthing them , they are still better 😀

Yeah they're pretty good cars. Only real concerns are a) RWD-only makes it a bad car for harsh winters; b) the rocker window switches aren't great for kids left in there with the accessories or engine on; and c) if you don't quickly fix any engine misfire, it'll blow the cat. Otherwise, there's not much that can go wrong with those. Have a mechanic you trust look it over before buying, of course.

Thank you for this information! I can sleep better knowing that my 6 year old Subaru is most likely going to have fewer problems thana my '06 had. I still have no idea what that old Subaru's issues were, nor did the mechanic. What I do know is that car lost power on acceleration if I had come to an abrupt stop. And the acceleration was very choppy and I'd have to press the gas over and over, up and down to get enough juice to go. Otherwise, the engine would just rev as if it was in neutral. Wish I knew what the problem was so I can keep a good eye on my '17. Thanks for all your great videos!
