When I started working on it last april I changed the air filter, the oil filter, put new oil on it, the speakers were rotten and the one on the passenger side just fell down. The front suspension was lose and didnt work. The springs and the shock abosrbers need replacement. The steering pump was leaking, so were the diferentials and the transfer case. And recently the muffler fell out because it was worn out

@@djs18 my boss bought a new 2 dr coupe in 95. He had problems with it about 3 mos in and took it to the dealer. Turned out worse than he imagined, some snafu in the radiator allowed engine coolant to get into the transmission and transmission fluid to get into the engine! They replaced pretty much the whole powertrain and radiator.(under warranty) His wife had an 88 4dr "van den plas" at the same time, it was in the shop about once a month. But they loved them, they really were different from any car on the road with the quality of the leather and wood. I will say Ive never driven a car that felt so safe in the rain as her 4 dr. @jayevans68105 жыл бұрын
I have owned one for over 3 years. Bought it towards the end of the depreciation curve so its still worth about what I paid for it. Other than regular maintenance, no issues and it drives like new, very reliable. There is a compartment in the back of the seat that allows access to the water pump, alternator , etc and you can get to most other items through the top of the engine bay or by removing the rear tires. Some items require special tools but him saying that you have to take the engine out to replace the alternator means that he shouldn't be working on Porsches.
@limulus615 жыл бұрын
I have a 2015 981 Cayman S and I have loved it. No problems with anything. It does only have 16,000mi. He is right about buying them new. This one was $86k which is kinda ridiculous. I found a great former Porsche mechanic who has his own shop and oil changes are about $220 which is less than 1/2 what the dealer charges. He uses all genuine parts so the warranty is not voided. I took it for the 4-yr service earlier this year and it was less than $1k or less than 1/2 the dealer price. I also have a PDK transmission and it has been very reliable to this point...but only 16k on the odometer. I know a replacement is around $15k so take that for what it's worth. Just because I have the PDK dual clutch, I'll keep the warranty extended. I have the Porsche Sport Exhaust and I added aftermarket headers with 200-cel cats from Soul Performance. Nothing makes the hair stand up on the back of your neck more than the sound this thing makes in launch control or at 4000RPM up to redline. The new 718 CS is faster but the sound the 981 makes especially with the sport exhaust valves open is otherworldly. Also, I believe it is the 718 that has the higher depreciation. The 981 and earlier 987 seem to be holding their values quite well since the 718 came along. I believe Porsche will go back to a flat six as an option and not just the GT4.

I'm a woman of a car guy who restored old classic cars. He was a wealth of knowledge. Today @ 65 yrs old I have always checked all my hoses & fluids under the hood (which I have pre bought fluids and always in my trunk) and tire pressure and added if need be, I've changed & replaced my brakes, tires, windsheild wipers, oil and oil filters, fuses in fuse panels. flat tires, tail lights and headlights, I think you see what I'm saying, but since first owning my first car when I was in my early 20's. I would always try to learn the maintenance of my vehicles after that, no matter what vehicle it was and I've had a lot of them throughout. Anyways the list goes on, So why am I telling you all this. Well, I have probably had, I'd say 15 places where I broke down on highway travels or in the middle of nowhere where I was alone or at times with my young son (we didn't have cell phones in my days) and it was my knowlegde and especially not panicking when things happened and with a supply of tools and survival equipment stored in my vehicle, I was able to get myself out of the situations I found myself in. I've become my own little mechanic and I was so glad I paid attention to my car guy. My son became a good car guy to, built plastic car models since young, he taught me a lot about my cars as well. I think more women should take more interest in their vehicles just on the basic maintenance that we can check and do on our own to prevent that breakdown. And to me #1 learn to change a tire if you drive any highways alone. Just the basic's can save you a lot of money and time. I really enjoy your video's Scotty Kilmer I right away found you a wealth of knowledge. Will keep coming back for sure. I enjoy learning all this stuff. Thank You

Today I still have a E91 328i wagon. It’s running fine (knock on wood). It has more plastic engine parts than the E39, and so I still have it knowing that it could be one repair away from letting it go. Adrian those Audi’s are nice looking. And the E34 is classic BMW styling. The Bangle designs, I think, worked only on the smaller cars. Like 3 series. I changed the waterpump on my Porsche Cayman S & can confirm you don't have to drop the engine like scotty says. I also changed the alternator, it was a PIA.. but it did take me "only" 2 hours to remove and install and it's accessed through a hatch behind the seats. (so I also didn't have the drop the engine). belts and pulleys also accessed thru the hatch and it took me less than 1/2 hour to do change these.. if I had to do it again it would probably be 20 mins as I'm past the initial learning curve.

I had a garage and a full mechanics tool set at the time and so I was able to do the maintenance and small repairs. When it needed something more involved I brought it to a good independent Porsche/BMW shop whose owner I knew well. The total cost of ownership for that car was more than for my wife's new V-6 Honda Accord, but it wasn't that bad. The car was a total blast to drive. The trick to keeping a used Porsche is not to cheap out and not do the maintenance it needs. That mistake will cost you big time in the future.
