My mother bought a cashmere sweater vest in the 1950s and still had it in wonderful condition when she died in 2015. My sister has it now, and it is almost 70 years old.

Glad that some sections were not chewed by moths or other insects. I wonder how to keep a natural fiber [or even a blend] material of clothing stay in pristine condition aside from living in a cooler climate all year long... perhaps pack it in a plastic? Sorry, no idea... I am from an archipelago country where it's mostly humid... but would love to learn some tips on this subject. TFS☺.

If you live in a cold(er) climate I'd extend out the jacket/blazer suggestion to include the best quality winter coat you can afford - in a flattering silhouette for your body type and made of a fabric that''s suitable for your particular weather situation. One friend spent a fortune on a goose down parka that absorbs rain like a sponge - basically useless for our winters. Another friend buys the cheapest coat possible each winter and then complains that it's falling apart/unwearable by March. I can't afford a coat that sits in my closet 11 out of 12 months, or a cheapo coat I have to replace every year. I have a classic, navy wool coat from Benetton I got in the 90s - replaced the lining last year - still going strong.

Well said ! LL Bean and/or Lands End makes a " 3-in-1 coat " - great for those of us who need options for the days of quickly changing weather during three out of four seasons . Often on sale , nice color choices , & can be machine washed . ( Cold water Woolite , gentle cycle , a few minutes tumble dry on low , then hang to dry - my coat still looks & feels great after years of serious wearing ! 🥰 )

I think your suggestions are spot on. Even if you cant travel to the next town, take yourself out for a nice dinner once a month. As a consultant who travelled all the time, I have eaten many great meals alone. The staff is usually very nice, make a reservation for a booth if possible. Every year for many years I have invested in a cashmere sweater or outfit. They NEVER go out of style. I live in Florida, still perfect. for 3 out of 4 seasons, needed in air conditioning in the summer. My first year in my own business I bought myself a gift...a watercolor for over my bed. Thirty years later I still look at it with pride! I like to buy Italian shoes esp with leather soles. You are so correct about timeless styles and high quality shoes can be re-soled and made to look new by a good shoemaker. Finally, I wanted to praise the concept of shopping in your own ( or your grandmother's) closet or thrifting. Items made of silk, wool, and even linen are always in fashion. Just buy a steamer! Great job❤️

I love cashmere, it’s the only wool I can wear next to my very sensitive skin. In the uk there is a company called ‘Nearly New Cashmere’ they recondition & sell secondhand cashmere or if a sweater for example is beyond repair they turn it into accessories-gloves, hats etc.

Years ago I bought a very expensive dark tan leather handbag. It was beautiful and almost every time I used it someone would comment on how handsome it was. I used that bag for over 10 years and eventually found it too large when I needed a shoulder bag for greater convenience. It went to a charity shop and I hope that the next owner loved it as much as I did. Thanks for a very thoughtful and thought provoking Audrey.

It's hard to find a 100% wool coat these days, though it used to be easy. As for cashmere sweaters, my impression (possibly wrong) is that they're hard to launder and care for. I do love 100% wool for a sweater or winter coat, as I have experience with that. I had a beautiful wool/cashmere winter coat years ago that I got in Filene's Basement back in the day that I loved. The cashmere made the wool so much softer. It was red, and at that time I always wanted a red coat to get me through the harsh Northeastern winters.

All your tips are spot on. Simply elegant is timeless. Shoes have always been the number one luxury item for me, even more now as I age. My mother taught me to never compromise the health of my feet and to always choose a well-made and comfortable shoe as well as a nice watch (stressed more for my brother). Also I love diamonds; however, due to the circumstances of their mining and the dangerous fleecing of people I now chose to either wear conflict-free diamonds, sustainable diamonds, or not wear diamonds at all. I love your videos and have been a subscriber for a long while now.Thank you for considering this option as an alternative to enjoy such a naturally beautiful, yet, controversial accessory.

Hello Audrey! I agree with your suggestions. However I think that what one should invest in largely depends on one´s lifestyle and place of living. I live in the North, so good winter coats and shoes are a must, cashmere sweaters and scarves as well. The quality of my Summer clothing is acceptable, not luxurious, Summers are rather short here. Basically, I tend to rely on M&S, when I buy things for Summer, their linen mix trousers etc. are quite good. But Summer or Winter, my shoes are from Italy. As you stated, Audrey, good shoes last longer and are comfortable. I wish you a nice week! 🐩👗🧥🧣

In 2016 we took a family vacation to London and Paris (from LA) and I splurged on a pair of black Tieks flats. I wore them every day, and when we got home I ordered two more pair, in red and navy. Last year I finally replaced the black ones and soon navy and red. Eight years is a very long time and living in California we don’t have terrible weather so these shoes get worn a LOT. Great video, thanks.

My kids are my biggest luxury item! 😆 Jokes aside, I’m adding a few luxury pieces as I’m able. Timeless work trousers, a couple cashmere sweaters, a nice handbag, a few key jewelry pieces. It took me awhile but I now only buy two brands of shoes. They fit well and size true so I can buy them online when I find them on sale over 50% off. It does mean that sometimes I don't get a pair in a color I really love because everyone else loves it too. But the next season new colors come along and I find something else I love. I do the same with sweaters and have lately been buying the men's cashmere sweaters because they are longer (I HATE cropped) and they seem better made and there are wonderful jewel tone colors not always offered in the women's sweaters.
