Yes Roger agree that Glasgow tops Newcastle, especially regarding the room, which as you said looked tired and very brown! Breakfasts looked similar though. Would still stay at hotel if staying in Newcastle, hopefully with a better room view! Good walkabout around the city centre. Nice one! 😊 👍

When it was run by Mr R Handa it was okay gone down hill a lot now. The sons used to run a few hotels which is now part of the Cairns group. I got to know Mr Handa very well and his son in Law who was a doctor who I did some electrical work in his hotel in Stirling.

Much appreciate your style Roger with this hotel series. Newcastle is probably what most people would think is a typical BR-style railway hotel ! But still it offers lots of history from the golden days and of course is a perfect location for those arriving by train.

Cheers Alex. I'm glad there ar BTHs at all price points. As impressive as The Balmoral and The Landmark are - they are so expensive. Glasgow, Newcastle etc makes them more accessible to everyone! 😀

Loved the look around the hotel. It brought back memories of meeting Rod Stewart there in December 1976 after a concert at the City Hall. As you walk in the hotel and up those few steps there is a private reception room to the left (before the lifts). Rod was sat at the head of a long low table waiting for some sandwiches. Britt Ekland was nearby but she gave me a mucky look, almost as if I was taking her Rod away for a few minutes. Rod was great we chatted about the concert, his record collection and soul singer Sam Cooke. Spent a good 10 minutes with him and got my programme signed. Before I went in to meet him, the members of his band and Newcastle United football team were hanging out in the lobby (Rod was going training with them the next day). Great experience and your video (unbeknown to you) brought back a special memory. From one Rog to another. Thank you.

It hasn't improved much since I last stayed there in 2001. The days of these hotels must be numbered given the enormous cost of upkeep.
@RogEdwardsTV7 ай бұрын
I wonder whether the really expensive ones (like The Balmoral and The Landmark) will last longer than the cheaper (and more rundown ones). 🤔
@donaldskinner-reid89987 ай бұрын
@@RogEdwardsTV Yes because they offer so much more not just in terms of service but quality. These buildings need enormously deep pockets to keep going. There are wealthy people out there but the lower priced old hotels are doomed. The Mercure in Exeter is in a similar vein to Newcastle - seen better days. As for The Grand in Torquay - I'd love to see your review of that one!

Ah now I think I lucked out with my room - it was £60, a small single room in the roof, but had a bit of a view and was very pleasant indeed. Also (after booking) I had read the Tripadvisor reviews and went in expecting the worst, so was pleasantly surprised! The reviews barely mentioned the wonderfully preserved grandeur of the public places, but there is always going to be a bias towards complaints, I suppose.

Catching up on Daddy Rog's videos after my holiday in Ireland and Italy! Royal Station still retains a bit of that old world glamour in its interiors; Dublin's only true railway hotel (maybe?) is The Address, sitting directly across from Connolly Station, is even more pared down than this although it's designated as a 4-star property. Poke!

Hope you had a good holiday. The Address Connolly looks interesting and has recently been refurbished apparantly! 😀

Very nice review - you have a warm, engaging style. Nothing beats a glass of red (especially complementary). I stayed there about 2 months ago. It was fine for one night - room was good size, dated as you say. The main issue was my room faced out to the main road and it was quite noisy from the street even at 11pm. Location was great; next to station and easy walking distance to the main sights. Definitely not as good as the Glasgow place.
@RogEdwardsTV7 ай бұрын
Thanks so much for the comments! I had a bit of a giggle when I saw the earplugs in the drawer. But given the traffic noise (and there was a night club downstairs which I didn't mention in the video) I can see why they might be needed! 😮😂

Indeed. Glasgow hotel is the top brand of an international chain whereas Newcastle is owned by a domestic firm. As for hotel rates these vary depending on a city's occupancy. Glasgow has lower rates because so many hotels. I mean Virgin Hotels opened a brand new 5* Glasgow property in August 2023 but had to close it before Christmas 2023 (after only four months !) because it couldn't fill its rooms.

It's very overpriced for what it is and puts me in mind of a Brittania Hotel. I don't know why anyone would stay here when you've got the Hampton by Hilton just over the road. Plus you have the Maldron which is just a short walk away. I guess they're just relying on the name and nostalgia to get guests the doors
