I’m in Glasgow a lot, but as I live in Edinburgh I rarely need to stay overnight. I’ve been in the Champagne Central a few times, but always thought the hotel was uber expensive. This has been a real eye opener. So much space and luxury for that type of money. Well done you and well done Glasgow Grand Central.
@RogEdwardsTV6 ай бұрын
I was the same. I'm used to the Railway Hotels like The Balmoral in Edinburgh and The Landmark in London being eye-wateringly expensive which is why I was so shocked (and delighted) by the prices at Grand Central.

Brought back many memories when I worked as a receptionist and I was delighted the layout was basically the same as it was then. The amount of times I was up and down those stairs to the first floor certainly kept me fit. Thank you for letting me refresh those memories of the 70s.

JFK actually made his first ever public speech in Central. His dad was US ambassador at the time and JFK was despatched to escort the bodies from the sinking of the SS Athenia back home. All the American dead were laid out on the station concourse and JFK did a 'thank you for your kindness' type speech for the way Glasgow had looked after them. So there we go, the time JFK stayed in Glasgow Central hotel

Hello Roger, excellent introduction to your new railway hotels series. Yes the breakfast looks fabulous and the accommodation rate (at the time you stayed) was outstanding ... especially when compared to London rates. What amazes me is how much guest space was provided in days gone by. I particularly liked the grand staircase ... today's modern hotels use that space to squeeze in more rooms !
@RogEdwardsTV7 ай бұрын
Thanks Alex. Those grand staircases are fabulous, but you’re right. Today all you get are functional concrete steps behind a fire door! 😮

Rog, they were not "British Railway Hotels" but actually "British Transport Hotels" and I should know having been an hotel management trainee with them for four and a half years back in the 1970's. I worked in 10 of their 34 hotels. The Central Hotel had a fantastic restaurant called "Malmaison".
@christinarankin1926 ай бұрын
It was absolutely amazing and I had the privilege of seeing "upstairs " and "downstairs " when I was a restaurant cashier. The calm splendour of the restaurant and the intense professional work ethic under Chef Labatte.

@@christinarankin192 BTH had easily by a country mile the best chefs in Britain for any hotel group. Of course, there were a few other notable chefs around, but not as such a large combined group.
@apollomemories73996 ай бұрын
@@RogEdwardsTV BTH management training was regarded as the pinnacle of the industry, head and shoulders above any other company and streets ahead of any university degree course. It's difficult to pinpoint a favourite hotel as such because what I remember the most are the people I worked with and was very lucky to have worked with, I should add. It was these experienced staff members that taught me the integral mechanics of the trade. For the "favourite" I probably should say it was Gleneagles, but it wasn't and I have much better and pleasant memories of stints at the Tregenna Castle way down in St. Ives, Adelphi, Liverpool, the Welcombe in Statford-upon-Avon, the Royal Station in Newcastle, the Grosvenor at Victoria London, Station Hotel in Aberdeen, Old Course in St. Andrews and the North British in Glasgow, too. BTH were really good to work for and they also sent me away for a year's cross-training to the fabulous InterContinental in what was then known as West Berlin, where I would earn more per night on tips than I would earn per week with BTH. Back then West Berlin was the show piece of the western world and operated 24 hours. I would leave work at 2am and go clubbing till 8am. Unbelievable.

Absolutely no views over the station at all despite being on one side of the station. The prices particularly at dinner time was frankly eye watering, especially considering there are plenty of choices around the hotel itself. Though the food was nice and well presented. The building itself desperately needing some TLC and a lick of paint particularly on its windows desperately needed. Always really busy. Aberdeen’s Station Hotel also similar
