I dunno. As a girl, who once was a teen, I can see it for an exageration of truly teen moments. I mean, fawning over boys with my friends, making a fool of myself, trying to embarass my brother in front of the girls he had a crush on, and having everything feel like it was SUCH a big thing hence the drama feels very much like my teenage years. I only think that Lydia got abused by an oportunistic man before she had the change to grow out of it, as Kitty did, and got stuck on a happier times behaviour in the hopes of emulating it.
@choryllis6646
@choryllis6646 2 жыл бұрын
You're absolutely correct. And it's not like Lydia was given a good idea what to look for either. With most fathers being absent in the actual upbringing of their daughters during the time, it was left up to the mother. And Mrs. Bennet raised her daughters to find a man to marry as soon as possible so long as he was high enough status so that she and her other daughters might have SOME form of financial support, which Mr. Bennet indirectly refused them. So Lydia and the rest of the girls were neglected by both their parents and raised to find a man ASAP, which she did.

I think it’s important to remember the times and context to analyze their character… girls were supposed to be proper, and while fawning over boys as a teenager is normal, Lydia and Kitty were allowed to pursue those interests completely unchecked. Their parents were supposed to impose some limits and provide formal education. Their behavior was inappropriate for their time, and it’s a reflection of their poor upbringing

What I think that is incredible about Jane Austen writing is that she was such an keen observer of life that there are so many layers in her work that depending on what detail you pay attention, you can always find something new to analyse and think about. I believe that is also why her books have aged so well.

I feel like no matter how irksome Collins might have been, it was still cruel of Lydia and Kitty to laugh in his face after Lizzie rejected him. Jane could be seen visibly trying to suppress a smile but at least she had the decency to not laugh. Mary was the only one who didn’t act disgraceful in that scene I’d say.

lydia feels insufferable but i do feel very bad for her and i certainly enjoy her character. she was groomed and then basically forced into marriage because there was no other choice. she was so young and in her circumstance, she had no one with better senses who could potentially lead her out of it. she was raised by mrs bennet and all mrs bennet ever wanted was to get her daughters married up, so she grew up with that. her parents did not keep her in check, and lydia surely wouldn't listen to lizzie or jane either, typical. her situation simply demands her to become the lydia she is and although i feel sorry for her, as she was robbed off the opportunity to grow up, getting married to mr wickham was the best and only option for her. in the end, lydia did bring this upon herself but so did all the other circumstances that led to her running away and almost dooming herself.
