"defending yourself." How convenient for you to be in a position to claim that his life was actually in danger during the decision to fire. He literally shot them as they were driving off. The time to claim self defense would've been to shoot them when he was actually being held at gunpoint. the carjackers were bluffing with the assault rifle. nobody interested in stealing someone's car is going to insist on killing the driver just to add to the frustration of trying to fence the stolen car. and then add to that that the car itself is completely worthless if it has the driver's dead guts strewn all over it. look, i'm sorry that it's conceivable for bad things to happen to good people, but a fucking car isn't worth a person's life. we have laws about murder to keep people from trying to solve all their problems with violence. your fucking insurance should cover you in case of theft. just let the piece of shit survive ffs.
