Lyme Regis Fossils

Lyme Regis Fossils

Күн бұрын

We are fossil collecting along the Jurassic Coast today, to look for ammonites. We will be looking for the right little rocks at low tide. You can break the small ammonites out of the thin grey layered limestone rocks. I hope you enjoy the geology, palaeontology, fossil wood and more. Join me on my fossil walk I’m taking out. You will see a great find right at the end of the day the lady on my fossil walk makes. Some people have said to me there is nothing left on the beaches to find-where have all the fossils gone ? Well it’s been “fair weather “ fossil hunting recently, there hasn’t been any rough weather around. Now the real Wintery weather is arriving the mudslides will get activated by the rain. The big waves and rough seas will wash fossils out of the mudslides and onto the beaches at low tide! I’d like to find some of the beautiful little pyrite ammonites that wash out along the beach at low tide. Little nuggets of gold delight, saved from the shifting sands. I recommend wearing safety glasses and sturdy rubber gloves when hammering the right little rocks. Remember the cliffs are dangerous and liable to fall suddenly and without warning. Keep away from the dangerous cliffs, the best fossils are washed out onto the beaches at low tide, by the sea's actions. Look out for the slippery seaweed on the ledges and rocks. I offer fossil walks along the Jurassic Coast on the following website, so feel free to take a look at the website I made, with our online fossil walks ------www.lymeregisfo... There is a fossil collecting code of conduct in place along the Jurassic Coast.

That was so good to hear such experienced experts "decoding" and solving an uncooperative rock together. I hope we get more glimpses like this into your deeper knowledge and skills : it was brilliant.

Thanks 🙏 for your comments! Yes sometimes we are confused by the new adventures the fossil hunting throws at you! We have 70 years of rock splitting skills between us and still we are baffled for a bit - sometimes !

Thanks 🙏 very much indeed Mike ! A very clever fossil hunting lady actually found that lovely vert right at the end of the fossil hunting trip ! She also was enjoying the small ammonites I was finding in the thin grey layered limestone rock for her as well

Excellent fun 🤩 out there in the storms ! - fossil hunting. The thought that you had booked the fossil hunting trip so long in advance then got what you wanted and it all worked out was just amazing . So well done with your own special ichthyosaur vertebra find right at the end of the day , after all had checked the beach

I know ! as you said what were the odds of that happening ! You could have very easily left the beach early as well as we were getting hammered by the weather! You could have just given up and you’d never have found that amazing backbone ! Then you were back out to it the next day and came up with the extra special Crinoid find ! Great stuff I really enjoyed being out there with some one doing the real fossil hunting like you . 🌧️ 💨 ☔️ 🌊

There has to be a better way to split these apart and not ruin so many fossils? For most of the fossils I find I use an air scribe. With the right chisel tip you van catve most fossils right out of the rock around it.

The Arnioceras bodleyi ammonites are so hollow they break badly. The ammonites in thin grey layered limestone rocks split much better with some skill. Some people have taken the time to prepare the Arnioceras but that makes them have less of a Sheen and a lot of people like the natural look.

I just saw the video you were looking at. That was my friend Mike who was splitting that extremely awkward stone that day. The wood 🪵 in the stone fossilized really made it hard work 😓. Mike is on instagram @ mikeharrisonfossils he is a really a top professional but some days your just thrown a curve ball

Some ammonites preserved in iron pyrite have beautiful green calcite that has filled the chambers of the creature. They wash around on the beaches as bits sometimes and are collected at low tide
