Love Lynne Ramsey’s work. Her films constantly engage me, are profound and shocking to the core, and leave me thinking about them long after finishing them. Great video, love how you’re discussing her filmography!

I've only seen We Need to Talk About Kevin so far when it comes to her feature films, which was one I really appreciate but didn't really enjoy as much as I wish I did. She's very good at disturbing the viewer though, and I think her experimental style worked even better in the short film Swimmer, which I liked a lot more. Planning to watch more from her soon.

that's the problem with mainstream cinema, the studios or movie makers don't trust viewers,,, everything is about spectacle or 'wow' factor or being clever or funny or melodramatic. but that's a part of capitalistic culture in a way, there is a presumption one is supposed to be pleasantly manipulated or sold on something, instead of trusting in a longer process where things are revealed in a sophisticated and tangential or indirect way.

yes, so just watched 'we need to talk about kevin' in tandem with 'you were never really here', shares many similarities, about the trauma and misunderstood nature of protagonists, j. phoenix in latter and t. swinton in former, which i'll discuss here. there's a huge about of feminist analysis in 'we need to talk about kevin' that's too much for me to get into or to fully understand, but suffice it to say the mother receives an avalanche of blame. meanwhile, reilly's father figure is kind of just a dry placeholder in the story, probably intentionally as traditionally the father is not held accountable for the raising of children. we are led to believe subtly (or not so) that swinton did something wrong, but realize the story is of her life, as all of ours, is complicated and subtle, with mostly great intentions, a few big mistakes, and broad emotional conflicts and stressors. miller gave a great performance as well. def a movie w much to say about deep psychological issues and dynamics of modern life.
