We were on the 10th hole getting ready to tee off, and there was a band out on the deck of the clubhouse practicing for a Saturday wedding, we all started yelling "FREEBIRD"...PLAY FREEBIRD! It was great. Except they didn't do it. Cheers!

At least Free Bird is an original composition. Stairway was shamelessly stolen and Free Bird has nothing to do with Child In Time. Deep Purple? Meh, their music didn’t age well. There’s not ONE weak Skynyrd song (from the classic lineup).

WELCOME TO SOUTHERN ROCK HARRI! By the way, that's Gary Rossington playing that slide guitar. (One of my personal favorite guitar players!) Incidentally, Gary is the only one from that early line up of the band that is still alive at age 69. (With the exception of Artimus Plyle who took over as drummer for Bob Burns in 1975. Bob was the drummer on this recording. He died in 2015. Artimus is still around at age 73.) The other guitar player playing the main lead guitar when it kicks in with the uptempo part of the song is Allen Collins.

@@DK-ed7be I totally agree!! All great guitar players regardless of their technical level or speed, have their own "flavor" of playing. The phrasing and licks they use are always just what's needed for the song! The reason Gary Rossington is one of my top favorite rock guitarists is that his notes and licks always seem to perfectly compliment the song and bring it to life. His style is not just about shredding or hashing out super fast scales up and down the fret board. The licks he chooses whether it be a grooving, catchy riff throughout the song or a lead part just always have a melodic quality that's interesting and fits perfectly to the song. He is what I consider an artist on the guitar. He always produces some very tasty and fitting licks!

I'm sure you'll get a lot of suggestions to watch the live performance from Oakland. It is certainly impressive to experience those 3 gits live, but you get the added bonus of a great piano solo by Billy Powell - a guy who was a roadie, until Skynyrd discovered he could play piano. Not to mention a sea of hot "grandmas". : )

Billy is playing piano on the studio recording as well. He had become a full member of the band by the time they recorded their first album in 1973. He is credited as keyboards on the album. As for 3 guitars, That was in the live shows as you pointed out. However, Gary Rossington and Allen Collins are the only guitarists on the studio recording. What many people also are unaware of is, Ed King is playing bass on the studio recording. Most only associate Ed as a guitarist with the band. But Leon Wilkerson had quit the band just before the album was cut so Ed filled in as bass player on all the tracks of the first album except "Mississippi Kid" which he plays lead guitar and "Tuesday's Gone" (Al Kooper, the producer is playing bass on Tuesday's Gone" under the alias "Roosevelt Gook".)

My favorite performance is in 1976 at Knebworth where they preceded the Rolling Stones and blew them off the stage. The Stones refused to come out for hours until the crowd settled down. The video focuses so much more on the band members and since they pre-empted Mick Jagger's catwalk, you could see more of them.

Hi everyone, just thought I'd contribute some info. As you have pointed out, in the live performances there have been multiple guitarists, including Gary, Allen, Steve, Ed etc, depending on who was in the lineup at the particular venues etc. However, the musicians on the actual studio recording which is what we are hearing in this video, are as follows. (This is from the credits on the actual vinyl LP that I have). Lead guitar is Allen Collins, Rhythm guitar is Gary Rossington, Bass is Ed King (Ed played bass on all the tracks of this album except on "Mississippi Kid" which he played lead guitar and "Tuesday's Gone". Bassist Leon Wilkerson who quit the band just before the album was recorded is credited on the LP as composing many of the bass parts that Ed plays. Leon rejoined the band afterwards.), drums is Bob Burns (who would be replaced by Artimus Pyle in 1975. Artimus continued as the band's drummer right up until the 1977 crash. He is the drummer on many of the live videos we see. He also was drummer from '87 to '91), keyboards is Billy Powell, Organ is Roosevelt Gook (Who is actually Al Kooper the producer. He would use that name as an alias). Note: For those who don't know, Steve Gaines didn't join the band until 1976.

Especially live ar Oakland, or even better at Knebworth, where they walked out and performed out on the "tongue" stage made for the Rolling Stones, that they were opening for. So many on here making it sound like the entire band died in the plane crash, but they did not. Tragically, the lead singer Ronnie VanZant was among those killed. When the band decided after 10 years to perform again Ronnie's little brother Johnny took over as lead singer and the band was still rockin up until 2021. The plane they were on ran out of fuel just outside of Gillsburg Mississippi. As teens we all visited the crash site a few days afterwards as it was only a few miles from where we lived. Recently many of my friends built a memorial on the crash site. One of my very favorite bands ever and they created some fantastic music.

These boys loved the British Invasion music, especially The Rolling Stones. All music of the era had the Beatles, the Animals, the Hollies, the Byrds, Buffalo Springfield, and others as their role models. Lucky are we who grew up with this music. It was magical and a generous gift from Fate.

The talent level in the 70s will never be matched. Rock & roll, folk, Motown, the melodies, songwriting, the music, the bands, have stood up for 50+ years. Today, it's rap and country, period. They won't be playing that in 50 years

I was so excited seeing 1 of my favorite bands doing 1 of my favorite double albums in its entirety in 1973. The Who performing, "Quadrophenia". Little did I know, but an unknown band on their 1st national tour would "steal the spotlight". The Who were everything I have ever heard about a band playing raw rock and roll at an incredible level. But Lynryd Skynyrds performance is the one I talk about till this day. I am so glad and thankful I saw them 3 times before the tragedy.

Lynyrd Skynyrd is a Southern Rock band that got their start in the early-1970s. They were known for their great songwriting, and their great guitar solos and their excellent piano work. "Word-of-mouth" helped to create their large following due to their great performances in concert. In 1980, a number of their band members was killed in a small plane crash. In 1990, the surviving members of the band held a reunion concert, which was very well-received by Rock fans and music critics. They got offers to play more concerts, and have continued on ever since. Lynyrd Skynyrd has a concert scheduled for Youngstown, Ohio in October, 2021. Lynyrd Skynyrd are inductees in the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame.

Lynard Skynard was part of a wave of music in the ‘70’s loosely called Southern Rock. It had influences from country music, rock, blues and Creole, influences from around the Southern states of the US. Sadly, many rock stars/crew have lost their lives in small aircraft through the years.

The sounds, instruments, structures, transitions and level of musicianship was so great. What has happened? Great reaction and enjoy because that is what it is about.

You have got to go down the Lynyrd Skynyrd rabbit hole Harri. It's an absolute must. One of the greatest American rock bands of all time. There's only 5 years or so of their music with this lead singer, Ronnie Van Zant. He died in 1978, I was 11 and had just found them, my world was over, he is my hero. I still hear at least 5 songs a day from them on classic rock radio. I'm glad you heard this song. This is iconic. Please do some more Skynyrd. Don't ask me no questions, gimme three steps and simple man are a good start. There's about 1000 more after those. They're all good songs, many of them great. AND I MEAN GREAT!!!

Great reaction. Watch'em live at Oakland Coliseum in 1977. Shortly after the Oakland appearance the band went down in a plane crash in MS and Ronnie van Zant (lead singer and frontman of the band), Cassie Gaines, and her brother Steve Gaines were killed bringing the curtain down on the early band. They continued to get together for years after and the surviving members continued playing live concerts with a number of new members until a few short years ago when they played their farewell concert in 2019. Sorely missed.

Harri, considering that the British accent uses what's called a 'non-rhotic' R, I would say yes, you pronounced the band name correctly. In British accent, the R is not as much of a hard R as we in America pronounce it. In an American English accent the band name would sound more like Lin-nerrd skin-nerrd. It has more of what I would call a 'nasal twang' to it for lack of a better term to describe it.
