I am a 65 year old black man who has been a Skynard fan from the begining. While in prison for ten years. A lot of C O's got to know me. So when Freebird a came on my radio they knew for 9 minutes i was going to play it real loud. And do not ask me to turn it down. 😊 RIP. Ronnie, Steve. Allen. Leon. Billy

When I was in highschool (late 90s) I got in a fistfight with my best friend. She attacked me and her brother had to break it up. As soon as I got in my car and started driving, that dumb No Doubt song comes on " you used to be my best friend, I never thought this would be the end" and I had to pull over and sob.

This was their biggest song. In October 77, they had a plane crash and half the band died including their Lead Singer, Ronnie. The surviving members became the Rossington-Collins Band. I saw them on July 4th 1981 in Miami. They played Freebird as an Instrumental...and left an open Mic centerstage. Right on cue, the entire stadium sang for them...not a dry eye in the house...still gives me chills...

Interesting story my ex girlfriend granddad was the one who took them to the hospital and tried to save them. Plane crashed on his land. He still has the truck and still has some blood in the bed of it. One of the coolest things I’ve been able to see. The band honored him in 2019 at a concert in Jackson, MS

Free bird is considered one of the South's national anthems. I've listened to it since it came out but I never really got it until I was leaving my parents' grave sites on the interstate on my motorcycle. This song came on and the next thing I knew I was doing about 95 mph and just screaming dancing on my bike. It's such a powerful song.

Ronnie Van Zant would ask the audience at the end of their concerts, “what song do you want hear?”. The answer would always come back as “Free Bird”. This is their most famous song and their most beloved. “Sweet Home Alabama” is a good one from them to check out also.

Live version please! You have to see that guitar action! Li e at Knebworth is the best one. The camera focuses on the band and not so much in the crowd. Yes three guitars and yes it's a solo/ out to. When they played it live they played the solo sometimes up to 15 minutes. Pretty much until the drummer had to give the signal he couldn't go anymore. In the Knebworth performance lead singer has to tug on Allen Collins shoulder to get him to wrap it up on the solo

The breakthrough event for Skynyrd was when they opened for The Who on their US tour. They had exactly (!) 30 minutes, so they had to go from one song right into the next, leaving 9 minutes at the end for Freebird. Only a band as tightly rehearsed and disciplined as these boys were could make that work. And they did.

This music, along with other types of music, was a huge part of my youth. It still gives me great memories. I was really worried that you wouldn't give it a good review at first. The late great Ronnie Van Zant on vocals; Gary Rossington & Allen Collins on one of the most recognizable and famous guitar solos in rock history; Ed King on bass; Billy Powell on keyboards; Bob Burns on drums. The band endured more tragedy than any other band. Plane crash, car accidents, drugs, etc. The name Lynyrd Skynyrd was a take on Ronnie's high school gym teacher Leonard Skinner. Check out That Smell which deals with drug and alcohol abuse especially within the band. Also Tuesdays Gone, Simple Man, Poison Whiskey, etc.

I believe you can be forgiven for pausing during this solo lol. Great analogy w/ the double dutch too. Hilarious. Love this song but I have to admit I fast forward to the solo now. Its too great.

This was played at my friends funeral at his own request. So I have a different perspective of… if I leave here tomorrow…. It still makes me think of him and cry. It will forever be his song.

I saw them at The Fox in Atlanta when I was 18! They left a Golden Eagle on the piano for 30 minutes before they came out and played this song. They followed it with 3 encores!

They grew up in my home town, Jacksonville, FL over on the Westside- the wild side. They took their name as a play on their gym teacher, Leonard Skinner, who gave them a hard time over the long hair. They were a few years older than me but it seems like everyone in this town has a story about meeting them, jamming with, etc. I do know that gimme 3 steps is a true story about Ronnie dancing with another man's girl. But he didn't know. So sad about the horrible plane crash right as they were making it big time. Thanks for the trip down memory lane.

Don't forget to include the bass player Leon Wilkeson in the guitar count; that makes FOUR "axes" being shredded by Leon, Allen Collins, Steve Gaines, and Gary Rossington. Love your comparison of "FBird" to Double-Dutch! Studio version here actually sounds muffled, muted compared to the Oakland version, which has the added attraction of hippie chicks and so much crowd energy it's almost unbelieveable.

There are about 3.000 guitars in this song. JK. You need to see it live. Nothing against this version or this reaction, but you know how the energy is on stage! It's like a solo. It's like 40 solos at once. The woop woop woop is one of the million guitars.

To answer your question, that "woop woop woop" sound is the sound of the guitarist's fingers rubbing on the ridges of the lower strings. The thicker, lower register strings usually have thick ridges on them.

Thank you for recognizing free Byrd. You might want to look into the plane crash that killed several band members including the singer. The band plays on with the brother singing. I have seen them 46 times and saw the brother sing Freebyrd for the first time. The brother tried to finish Freebyrd but couldn’t. The crowd finished the song while the band played on. The emotions were on another level. Everyone was crying even the tough bikers.

Alan Collins and Gary Rossington on the twin lead guitar solo. The finest guitar solo you will ever hear. 2 guitars. Gary Rossington also does the slide guitar part Who plays the Free Bird solo? Although this video hit the KZbins a few years ago, we thought you'd enjoy hearing the isolated guitar-solo track from Lynyrd Skynyrd's "Free Bird." The solo on the song-which was played by Allen Collins and Gary Rossington-comes it at Number 3 on Guitar World's list of the 100 Greatest Guitar Solos of All Time. I've also seen Alan Collins hold a cigarette between his fingers playing.

👍 Time keeps on ticking... Fall of '73, my cousin opened a record store. (remember those? lol) I installed his audio system in the store. My other cousin, his brother, had just come from seeing Lynyrd Skynyrd open for The Who's Quadrophenia tour in Atlanta. The 1st record played on the system was Pronounced, the 1st Skynyrd album. After being blown away by Free Bird, we played Quadrophenia. Memories

Also.... Whop... Whop.... Sound is the keyboard. They use piano in studio and electronic keyboards at concerts because the keyboard can make CRAZY sound effects, especially back in the 70s

They were true musicians and unfortunately they were cut short. They were and still are the greatest Southern Rock band of all time. I actually took my Mom to a concert (post plane crash) in the 90s where Johnny Van Zant took the lead, and my Mom cried when they played her favorite song, Tuesday's Gone...my Daughter took me last year to see them with The Marshall Tucker Band and it was phenomenal! Her and my Son-in-law really appreciate this music, as they grew up on it. I played Skynyrd, Foghat, Robin Trower, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Allman Bros, Hendrix, etc blaring every weekend and sometimes during the week. I have over 300 old albums, everything from Booker T and the MG's to Zeppelin to The Bee Gees to Motown, ect and gave them all to my 16 yr old Granddaughter who I've introduced a lot of the old music to. She was thrilled and I guarantee that none of her classmates or friends has such a gift. Long live the music from the 60s and 70s! It's so funny that my Granddaughter is a huge Michael Jackson fan but knew nothing about the Jackson 5 til I showed her! I recently showed her Ted Nugent and she's a fan and says he can sure shred a guitar!!! You gotta love it!!! Wait til I show her one of my favorites, Robin Trower, Day of the Eagle! Carry on Van, and let me know if you wanna get introduced to some more of the phenomenal music of "back in the day!"

Ranked the number 2 rated rock and roll song of all time in the polls behind Led Zeppelin’s “ Stairway to Heaven.” Agree or not, that is how I see it,too. This one is a winner.Privileged to have seen this song in concert at least twenty times…never gets old. When Allen Collins did his solo, people just stared with their mouth open.

The wooop woooop sound is a sound that is generated when two of the three guitars cross each other's range. You can recreate this sound if you have two people that can whistle really loudly. It is hard on the ears for all parties.

I was fortunate enough to have seen them live several times, before and after the plane crash. The three guitarists are: Allan Collins Gary Rossington Stevie Gaines (died in the plan crash) You need to see them on one of their live videos. It will show you their guitar brilliance. You can check out "Tuesdays Gone" or "That Smell"
