And to most normal younger people at that time in the 70's that "racist symbolism" you're referring to simply meant a spirit of rebellion, much like the long hair, not racism, heritage, not hate. Did hate groups use it? Yes, but they also use other symbols like the stars and stripes and they really have no right to EITHER.

I went to one of the final concerts they’re probably ever going to have and it was amazing. They paid tribute to the members who passed on and they had Free Bird as their final song. Johnny VanZant, the current lead singer and brother of the original singer, Ronnie, stepped away from the microphone and let Ronnies recording finish out the song. I feel like Gracie Lou Freebush over and over! Dude you da man and no denying it! My question is what have you learned listening to this "Old School music from back in our time!?" Priceless and ageless isn't it! Kid's need to be turned on to not only their music but the music of generation's before them. It's historic and so beyond just music it is the sound of a generation and absolutely priceless to all from that time! All we want is LOVE! Music, food and amazing food brings us all together till the end of time. Memories formed and friendships never forgotten! You truly have no idea how relevant you are to the necessity of all our lives! I love you Gracie Love Freebush! You are priceless. May all the world have more Gracie' till the end of time!! A group of my friends and I listened to this song for the first time in 1973. When it was over we simply stared at each other for a while and said damn... here I am 47 years later watching you have the same reaction. Priceless!!! I would try to give you a list of songs but they are one of those rare groups that every song tells a story and it is told well. Off the top of my head I'd say, Gimme Three Steps, Call Me the Breeze, You Got That Right, I know a Little but there are another 25 or so that are just as good.

I love both live versions, but there is definitely something about the giant middle finger Ronnie Van Zant gave to Mick Jagger when he tried to tell them what parts of the stage they were *permitted* to be on in the UK concert.
