Pilot here. You really wouldn't find any fire-damaged components since the aircraft ran out of fuel. The 'white paint' you see on some of the aluminum parts is filiform corrosion from being exposed to the elements for so long. You usually would not find it on treated aluminum (Alodine). Alodine is an etchant used on clean aluminum and forms a protective coating. When dry it is either green or yellow.
@HistorySeekers5 жыл бұрын
We suspect the white was the outside of the plane as parts of it were white.
@wildestcowboy26682 жыл бұрын
I didn't think they ran out of fuel I thought the pilot was drunk and accidentally dumped the gas. Everyone got drunk on that plane.

The unopened beer can could be one left at the sight after the crash was cleaned up and gone by a farmer that owns the adjoining land. ..He was there helping take out survivors. . He said it took him 25 years to return to that sight,, he went there on the anniversary of the crash around the same time of day the plane went down,, he took with him two things... two cans of Budweiser beer,,, he sat down,, remembered that day , drank one can of beer and left the other unopened beer there for Ronnie.... just found that out...
@HistorySeekers5 жыл бұрын
Barry, we saw that after we got back. Here is the thing... there is a stamp that the beer was from Florida. So unless he went to FLORIDA to buy his beer in the 1970s. It’s not that one. We have already been in touch with Budweiser to confirm. Be sure to watch the uncut for picture of the Florida stamp. We didn’t realize it either. Give me just a few and I will post it in our community section and on our Facebook page.

At 27:23 the rectangular opaque pieces are mica, a flaky layered stone that is used as an insulator against heat (it's inside irons and toasters) and/or electricity. That assembly you dug up is probably some kind of switch or electrical device.

At about 7:00 you pulled up the tiller. I knew immediately what it was. That means you were standing basically where the cockpit hit. If the aircraft goes in nose down, the cockpit doesn't really scatter--it just plants itself and the rest of the plane does the scattering.

looking at this stuff, it can be really hard to identify particular components, although context helps. be careful to diagram where things are found. from there you can expand your search. I do have quite a bit of experience on older aircraft, I was part of a group in Kansas city that flew and maintained a Lockheed super constellation as well as a Douglas DC-3 restoration, worked on several WW-2 aircraft, including the B-17 bomber that crashed a few weeks ago. that being said, every manufacturer has proprietary techniques and I have never worked on a Convair. one thing that will be consistent are the engines, I am guessing this airplane had Pratt&Whitney R-2800 double wasp engines, I am going to look it up after I write this so if you expand your search from the cockpit area to where the wings rested you might find engine components that are easily identifiable. like I said, feel free to give me a call and we can discuss this, there is a lot to get into on something like this
@HistorySeekers5 жыл бұрын
Thanks Vic. At this time we have no plans of going back. From the sounds of things the NTSB got a lot of it so we were shocked that as much was found as what we did. We may need to get in touch with you about future project though.

The green is a zinc chromate primer. Used by nearly every aircraft manufacturer of the time. Usually, the first coat would be a yellow tint, the second darkened with black to make a green tint. This would be to indicate to the builders whether a part had been primed once or twice.

The band Aerosmith looked at this plane and decided it was a death trap and didn't buy it.Bad call on Skynyrd for flying in it even after the right engine was not running correctly.....and even caught fire the flight before.When many of the members were reluctant to get on the plane.....Ronnie said...….what the heck......when its your time …..its your time......so they all boarded anyway.Billy Powell said Ronnie didn't have a mark on him......but his head hit something hard like a tree I think.

All those really small bits and pieces? This means that the impact was horrendous! Convair builds excellent aircraft, some of the strongest made. I bet a major airline owned it for a good spell, long before this leasing company in Dallas acquired it. I hate to lay blame, but I put this one on Capt. Walter McCreary. If he had stuck with his 1st gut feeling, and not made that last turn, things would have been different because he wouldn't have had to clear trees so high. It would have also helped , had they 'stuck' the tanks in Greenville. Eugene Weaver

@HistorySeekers3 жыл бұрын
Brandon Mullins yes we saw that as well. What made this can different was the Florida tax stamp. Unless he drove to FL on a beer run. We confirmed with Bud that the can was the style produced in 1977. It was also buried under wreckage from the plane. Therefor we believe it is related to the band. Check our community section of this channel where we posted a picture some times back of the stamp.

Interesting thoughts Edward. I wonder myself if people's spirits linger over where they died or if they stay close to their children and loved ones. I can't imagine anyone's spirit wanting to be in a lonely forest when it could watch over it's wife and kids and grandchildren. No one visits this accident scene. It's off limits to everyone. It's lonely and desolate.

I think Ronnie's spirit went with the plane since he died in there and got crushed when the plane was scraped. I bet Cassie's spirit flew into whomever was holding her when she died. We would be up for it if the owners want us to do it.

A good hunt to document this accident site.

This stuff wasn't missed by investigators. When the investigators got through with their investigations they took a dozer and dug a large hole and pushed all the small pieces in the hole and covered them up. This stuff is coming back to the surface after many years. Saw this on another documentary.

Maybe see if the rock n roll hall of fame will take some pieces

We called them but they wouldn’t even let us talk to the curator. Now another museum is interested
@jasonsulham19795 жыл бұрын
History Seekers why would they not be interested in that? It’s a part of rock n roll history
@HistorySeekers5 жыл бұрын
Jason, I wondered the same thing. They wouldn't let us past the lady that answers the phone.

History Seekers did she say why they were not interested

Green is zinc chromate primer used everywhere on an airframe either prior to top coat for visual appealing color or left alone it's to protect against corrosion.

Did the property owners actually say that the land was going to be developed? I'm curious to know what they are going to do. I'm familiar with the area and that crash site is back in the woods in the middle of nowhere.

There was talk about it but nothing in stone.

What about the tree with the names carved in it, somebody might want to have that preserved 🙏
@HistorySeekers4 жыл бұрын
my understanding is that is not going to be removed. It is in our other video.

Hey if y’all don’t mind I’m going to try and share this with Artimus , I have a bud who place bass for the Artimus Pyle band, think they would like to see this if they haven’t already.. Really appreciate y’all sharing your experience with us.. I have one of the original Street Survivors record before the record company changed the cover..

Scott. That would be great. Show him the other parts too. We have the edited section that has over 425k views and just went back there a month or so ago right before the virus hit. Would love to talk to him about it.

I sure will as soon as we get the agreement signed. They are working through which pieces and how many they want for display.

I was watching a documentary where they were interviewing the rescuers and the survivors of the crash, one of the rescuers (Bobby, I believe) said he’d go out to the crash site about the same time of day the the plane went down, he took 2 beers with him, he drank one and left the other for Ronny. That could have been the unopened can of beer you found.

Yes we saw that too. We thought the same thing but then we found the Florida stamp. So unless he drove to Florida to pick it up then drove back.

AWESOME DIG!! I suscribed, HOWEVER, as a fellow Jacksonille (Duval County) Florida resident, How in THE WORLD did u get permission to dig there? Its on ULTRA ULTRA PRIVATE LAND! Not being a HATER, just really curious! #Freebird #Duuuval Keep up the GREAT digs! God Bless!

Thanks for watching Brian. We had a viewer that knew the land owner and was able to get exclusive permission for us to be there. The chance of a life time and A LOT of people are jealous over it, understandably so....
