Perhaps the best, southern pianist ever not being classically trained. Yes, he ranks as one of my top 10 favorites . He can get down and dirty as well as play beautiful, Total respect for this great pianist. RIP Billy Powell

Billy Powell in fact was classically trained! Quote from Billy Powell "Ronnie VanZant came up to me and said, 'You mean to tell me, you've been playing the piano like that and you've been workin' for us for a year....' And I said, 'Well, you know, I've been classically trained most of my life.

I think if you're going to be in a "vee-hickle" for any serious amount of time, Skynyrd HAS TO come along. I've done a ton of miles on motorcycle with this band. 1st band I ever met in about...1990? My record on a bike is 7,500 miles in 12 days, 15F on the low temp side :) Thank you for bringing all our stuff in your trucks :) You keep America going and you don't get enough respect of appreciation. :)

13 years later in 2022... They did have someone else take Billy's place. His name is Peter Pisarczyk, A. K. A. Peter Keys. He's good but not as good as Billy the Original. Mr. Powell was an out of this world freakin' great piano player. He could do it all. He's gone but definitely not forgotten! 🎶🕊🎵

From the first time I heard the piano solo on the breeze, every time the solo does the “ slide into the upper register of the piano “ It has never failed to put a smile on my face fantastic ..😁 A video, a fantastic performance….!!!! 🎶🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🎶❤️ Professor Jeff Galey🎶🎓🎼 ( The Jeff Galey Channel )

So, the original is in A major. Does anyone else find it interesting that this performance is in Ab? Also, I have a ton of respect for Billy and his solos are just perfect and should be learned by every rock pianist, but I think he is playing his solo in A because there is a lot of A being hit on the keys along with E natural. So, I wonder if for performance sake (audio mixing etc at such large venues) he is either playing a transposed keyboard in a piano body or playing along with a solo that he recorded in the studio.
@RandomPerson56789
@RandomPerson56789 7 жыл бұрын
I know this solo pretty well (took quite some time to get it down lol), and he's definitely still playing in A, just like on the recording/live with the original band. I have the DVD of this whole concert, and every song is down half a step. (due to Johnny's voice, I suppose). I know that they would always have a piano tuner come out to each concert to tune (since all that moving around definitely affects the tuning) so I figure they just tuned all the keys down half a step. I know for a fact it isn't a keyboard in a piano body, though that is how their current keys player does it!

I just hate the way videographers focus on the vocalist and guitarists during what is considered a legendary piano solo 👿. Further, the vocalist can't keep his fat trap shut so we can listen to the pianist. As a pro player, I've come to realize us piano players are bottom feeders in any band. Regardless of the talent, the video always turns to the so-called "stars and their guitars." In my next life, I'll learn how to play a Fender turned up to 11, like most of those guys do 🤣!

Billy Powell was incredible but I never ever understood the love for this band. It's just low-discount gutbucket Southern Rock (not as redneckish as Molly Hatchet, but close). Memorable tunes but nothing we hadn't heard a million times before. Give me some beauty and grace and subtlety ... e.g. Allman Brothers.
