I was there that day during the long hot summer of '76, Skynyrd were third on the bill, and not many in the crowd had heard of them, but they went down a storm and for me they blew the next two bands, 10CC and the Stones, off the stage. Check out Sweet Home Alabama from this gig as well, and the version of Freebird that day is the best, IMO.

To be honest T for Texas was the highlight of this show. Nobody had heard this 1920’s yodel country song, so to see the crowd go from zero to boiling was epic.

This song is amazing . As is about 99% of the songs created in the mind of Ronnie Van Zant ,Allen Collins , Gary Rossington & Ed King . Shot out to Steve Gaines for his contributions at the end. Ronnie respected him & I do too.

The woman playing maracas is JoJo Billingsley. Next to her, wearing the shawl, is Cassie Gaines. She and her brother Steve, the guitarist with the beard, died in the plane crash that also killed Ronnie Van Zant. (Not trying to be morbid. It's unusual for the camera to linger long enough to identify the backing singers & they shouldn't be forgotten.) Leslie Hawkins is on the other side of Cassie.

Another great song and reaction. Lots of these bands that blew up spent a long time travelling a bar circuit or small venue circuit before getting the break that takes them nationwide. Even though they may not yet be travelling everywhere, you can bet that most bands that make it have put in many thousands of miles in an expanding region before becoming stars.

A good southern rock band is Molly Hatchet. Their biggest hit is "Flirtin' With Disaster." Great guitars, up tempo, underrated vocals and drums on this song.
