Kudos for explaining that "Eirika gives the villain the macguffin wth Eirika" isn't a "Eirika is stupid" moment. people seem to forget that when its stated that someone you love is dead, or as good as dead, the first reaction is usually denial, Eirika loved Lyon too much to accept he is gone, especially when she see him standing and breathing and struggling against his literal and figurative inner demons.

That has always bothered me like it's no way in comparison to Celica's dumb moment in trusting Jedah to keep his word then acting all shocked later he tricked her then. I think the other thing that even adds to Eirika believing that there is a chance, a hope for her beloved friend is that L'Arachel mentions in the very same exact scene that her ancestor Saint Latona managed to drive away the Demon King and live. I would even say Lyon could have absolutely been the 2nd person after Latona to do that because what he tells Ephraim that as soon as he was about to be devoured he shouted out he will not and managed to drive the Demon King away, it's just that his problem was that he was so fixated on continuing his work given his self esteem issues this gave the Demon King something to work his way into Lyon slowly but surely warping him by worsening his inner feelings of self worth.

@@SonicLegends You dont have to bring Celica down to bring Eirika up, in fact I think Celica's decision makes just as much sense as Eirika's does

@@femspaint2911 I think they make sense, however it's heavily flawed as to who she is dealing with as there was not a single moment in the game that gave any reason why Celica should trust Jedah to keep his word as he's been nothing but antagonistic towards Celica and her companions and that's taking into account all the more baffling with having Sonya in the party given their relationship. If it was anyone else that Celica made the deal with I wouldn't have a problem with it.

Jedah:*Makes vague hint that Alm will be in trouble* Celica:"I give up, just make sure he's fine!" Jedah:"Sure, just fight for your life and meet me at the top of the tower!"(?) Jedah later:*Actually keeps his part of the deal by clearing the road.* Me:"Ok?" Jedah even later:*Sends Celica against Alm because he's a villain* Me:"Wait, what?" Honestly, I just feel Celica's side of the story is very strangely(And sometimes badly) written in general. It's not really a flaw of her character.

Thats a large part of why I love fire emblem. They treat most of their villains as main characters with actual depth and intriguing character design. And not some one off bad guy you have to smack. The series has ALOT of very well written antagonists. Lyon is definitely up there

I'd argue that Lyon is even more lost in Ephraim's route than he is on Eirika's route. Eirika!Lyon is still technically there, fighting against Fomortiis control. A hopeless fight, sure, but some part of his original self is still there, unlike what L'Arachel says. Eirika's misguided attempt to save him by giving him the stone might have even worked had she caught him in one of the rare moments he had some control. But Ephraim!Lyon is completely warped by the Demon King. While he thinks he's in control, in reality every single one of his actions is doing Fomortiis bidding. He's so deluded and corrupted that he thinks that he's stopping the Demon King even as he's preparing the ritual to resurrect him. To use a crude driving analogy, Eirika!Lyon is a guy tied next to the driver that can sometimes briefly wrestle the wheel from his captor, while Ephraim!Lyon is technically in the driver seat, but the DK is the one that is moving his hands.

Man, Paintman, I just needed to tell you, every time I get sad about things in my life, I remember this video and especially how you end off this video (minus the Patreon ad) and it genuinely never fails to make me cry in how you talk about how just because something is gone, it doesn’t have to hold you down, and that it’s a weight you have to carry. Idk how to explain it, but those words really helped me after I decided to start my morning off by listening to “Fly with the Breeze” to full on sobbing rewatching that last bit. It genuinely does help me whenever I am starting to get down in the dumps about things, and I wanted to say thank you for that. Ik it seems pretty inconsequential or something you never really expected to hear, but I wanted to say it anyways. Thank you.

On one hand yes on the other Lyon is technically not a JRPG villain. I empathized with him a bit more than I should during my teenage years. In retrospect, his character does deserve a rewrite, but only so that his sacrifice wasn't completely in vain. I would like to reasonably convince myself that, at least in death, he managed to finally convince himself he was as great as Ephraim and worthy to be Eirika's husband.
@lpfan4491
@lpfan4491 2 жыл бұрын
The entire point of him is that we wasn't emotionally ready to move on and in trying to get something, he actually lost himself. One can't change it one bit without losing the point of the character. And I don't see how one could reasonably change the dialogue of his deathscene without messing with the pacing.
@blackknightjack3850

@@lpfan4491 And you can convey that just as easily if Lyon meant for this to be a scheme to get rid of Fomortiis once and for all since the only reason he's going through with something so risky is that he feels inferior compared to Eirika and Ephraim and this is the only way he can feel comparable. Likewise, this helps preserve one of the strengths Ephraim's story has over Eirika's wherein Ephraim has to grapple with the idea of whether opposing Lyon is even the right thing to do. After all, Lyon was always the brains between them so surely Ephraim has to consider that he's thought longer and harder about this than he has.

@@blackknightjack3850 If he was able to plan anything, that means he had at least partial control. There surely had to be a way to get rid of Fomortis's soul without making it worse for literally everybody on the continent.
@Caddance

@@blackknightjack3850couple of things A. The reason Ephraim was questioning if he should fight Lyon or not has nothing to do with what he was doing but rather over the fact he feels it's his fault Lyon did this because he never realized how much he's hurt him B. The pointlessness of Lyon's quest is the point I feel. That he was so lost in his desperation for salvation that he played right into the hands of Formorttis and further drives home how tragic the "Where... Where did I go wrong?" Quote and if it turned out there was anything good from Lyon's actions if would ruin the impact of that line

I mean, that's the surface take of what happened. But there's little weirdnesses to what happens in Sacred Stones that make me doubt all of it. For example, what good is acting to Morva that he's still Lyon? He's about to off him and reanimate his corpse. The horrible truth is that Fomortiis actually never wrests control over Lyon throughout the story. Lyon needs Eirika to want to defeat him; he baits her, and betrays her, and tells her he's gone. Lyon needs Ephraim to want to defeat him; he becomes the world-ending threat. The cause of the Grado earthquakes is the Dark Stone. Lyon's goal, throughout the course of the game, is to defeat the demon king for good. He invades nations in such a way so that you'll have to follow him and pick up the legendary weapons on the way, he trains your army into legendary warriors capable of defeating the Demon King. He's on King Rigel strats, and he does some really horrible things in the name of hardening Magvel against its own Demon tumor.

The horrible truth is that Ephraim mode just doesn't make too much sense once one really thinks about it. They should have just put Lyon's dark moments into Eirika's mode and it would be a whole storyline.

Holy crap, Fomortiis has to be the most sadistic and vile character I've seen in an FE game. After devouring Lyon's soul, he leaves a shred of his consciousness remaining so he could see the DK kill Erika, yet prolongs it because seeing Erika suffer for Lyon is amusing. Damn! Valter is a full on criminal and Izuka committed one of the worst crimes a human could do, but this is just... savage.

Great video, especially the analysis regarding themes of loss, grief, memory and moving on. The only thing I would add is that another difference between the villains and heroes is that when tragedy strikes, the heroes seek support from their friends and loved ones while the villains push them away. -Renais gets invaded? Seek safety from our friends in Frelia. -Lyon can't be saved? Should have listened to your girl L'Arachel instead of your character flaw, since now your stone is broken. -Ephraim loses the Renais stone because he thought he could solo Lyon? Tana comes and supports his depressed ass. This whole plot would not have happened if Lyon had responded to Vigarde's death with "Hey twins/besties/bisexual-panic-inducers, my dad's dead and I don't think I can rule", instead of "Necromancy lessons from Turbo-satan".

No offence to anyone, but I feel like Lyon works best when he isn't a villain. His Eirikamode depiction with the additional backstory info from Ephraimmode does the job pretty well already and keeps the entire thematic of his mistakes and selfdestruction intact. I didn't really need a specific chain of events where he actively makes me feel like a fool for caring about him before. It's like my reply to him lying about being free would be "Sure, that just means you are a richard and I hate you. Is that really your standpoint now?"

I don’t really blame Lyon. Sure he held on a little too hard. But he was naive and genuinely thought he could harness the stone without it backfiring. He knew there were some risks but he didn’t think they’d be that big. Ironically he thought so little of Himself but the demon king controlling him proved just how successful he could’ve been with just a little bit of gusto. But most of all, some people aren’t up to the task. He would’ve been a wonderful person had he just been born to someone else or had his father merely not gotten sick at that point in time. The thing that makes him tragic is that he didn’t deserve that fate but due to circumstances and despite good intentions it happened anyway. Regardless good video.
