@LyonsArcade4 жыл бұрын
The early ones yes you could just detach the heads. The later ones folded down like you're thinking.... we've actually bought them before with either the head or the body missing, I went to an auction in Sumpter, SC once and there were about 40 pinball machines there, that the heads were all missing to. So they were just selling the bodies, pretty much useless unless you want to part them or hack them into a coffee table, which I did not... So somewhere, there must have been 40 pinball heads with no bodies. Horrible.

Hi Ron, you're off to a great start ! I've seen many of your other pinball/playfield repair videos. and I have no doubt whatsoever that this will look great once you're done! I do have a couple of questions (because, of course I do...); 1) You've mentioned in the past about heat damage over time in the back box area. Since you have access to several DC voltages in this area, would the addition of a small, quiet computer fan pointed out one of the back box vents to keep the air circulating (and therefore dissipating the heat) be of any help? 2) In this instance, you mentioned having to use a cleaning product on the playfield. You also mentioned not wanting to get the playfield wet. Do you then recommend spraying your cleaning solution onto the rag/towel, and then using the moistened rag/towel to clean the playfield, thus reducing the possibility of playfield damage?
@LyonsArcade4 жыл бұрын
1. That may help, definitely. Couldn't hurt! 2. It's better to do it that way, but when they're really gritty we have to just spray the actual surface down and go to town. On a machine that's in better shape though yup I'd put it on a towel. Thank you for watching Dave, we appreciate it!

When I cleaned up the nest in my machines I wore my ventilator mask and gloves. Something like this though I think you are fine. :) I have cleaned up a ton of pinball machines and have yet to fall very ill yet. :) And that is ok I actually did the same thing with the cleaning of the Star Trek I got. I had a Black Hole that I paid 200 bucks for that had a playfield in much worse shape then this one. I never put a drop of paint on it. If you can get it up and running 100 percent (which I've seen enough of your work here to know that you can), then the aesthetics can often be seen as a patina of sorts. Just be careful to not make it worse by doing a crappy touch up job. It may even be best to source a local artist to help repaint some of the text around the bonus amounts (which for me, would be the one thing I'd like to see added back). Good luck with the project, and thanks for not tossing it in the dumpster! ;-)

The playfield lights that are lite and stay on that means that the driver transistors are shorted? If you remove the connector on the output of the Lamp driver board to remove all the lamps connected to the lamp driver board. Each output pin should be Zero/0 volts? if a pin is +6vdc that means the driver transistor is shorted?
@waynegram89074 жыл бұрын
@@lwilton yes I did notice that 3 lights were first time turned on and later they were off. The LATCHES are the PIA chips? Some Pinball games Coil driver boards and Lamp driver boards use SCR latches. I have noticed pinball games will solder a resistor across the lamp socket to adjust the timing of the SCR. The resistor acts as a load to the SCR latch, using different resistor values will adjust the SCR latch timing that is what other pinball repair techs have told me that is what the resistor is used for but not sure if this is true or not. Other pinball games will solder a diode across the lamp socket, which All the lamp sockets will have the diode in the same polarity direction. I don't know why they would use a diode in the same polarity direction soldered across all the lamp sockets.
@waynegram89074 жыл бұрын
@@lwilton The Lamp driver boards that don't use PIA chips and FET drivers but use Decoder chips will be connected to SCR's. The MCU will address the decoder chip to turn on or off which SCR outputs. The SCR are driven by the decoder chips which are a logic DC voltage to the Control gate of the SCR. The Resistor soldered across the lamp sockets will put a load on the SCR output which changes the on/off timing of the SCR. I think these lamp driver boards were before PIA chips/FET driver boards. When pinball games switched over to PIA chips and FET drivers. The Diodes soldered across the lamp sockets were some sort of early 70's diode matrix lamp circuit but not sure how the diode matrix works if all the diodes are in the same direction across ALL the lamp bulbs. The PIA chips have A,B,C registers which are addressable. When the MCU writes an address to the PIA chips A,B registers it will cause the PIA chip to output high or low on the output pins depending on the address.

That much wear implies it obviously made it's owner a lot of money, yet they never had someone clean it ? It's not just it's former owners that neglected this, whoever was repairing for them it didn't care either.

Yeah it's been abused multiple times!

I use to work in an arcade about 20 years ago when I was in college. We tried to clean the games if we had time. Weekends were out as everything was always being used and I was busy replacing buttons, pulling papers out of coin mechs and filling up tickets on the prize games. That and picking up garbage and helping lost little kids. So during the weeknights I could usually get to one or two games but I only worked three weeknights and with over 100 arcade games It was a never ending cycle. Usually it just involved cleaning the outside of the cabinet and removing the glass from the monitor and cleaning around that with the occasional job of actually replacing parts. The fishing line on Sega Bass Fishing was the biggest pain. Then "testing" all the functions. I always made sure to do a lot of "testing." :) Pinball games required more work because they had a flat surface it usually meant that it was often a place where drinks were set and eventually knocked over. Removing the glass and cleaning up that mess was never fun.

Is it possible to return that to factory new? Yeah, but its hard work and time.

@@LyonsArcade I'm retired Navy, one of my jobs was working on museum grade aircraft after 'drama' ensued damaging avionics and control panels. I'm the person who got stuck with 'holycrap! did you have an elephant sit on it then take a flame thrower to it?' with the "I want it fixed by tomorrow and I want it like new!" :/ Only some aspects of my Navy experience is applicable to new jobs.

They charged you for this game ? Thats a bit much. Should have given it to you free. Guy was probably never going to do anything with it except throw it in a dumpster at some point. Jeez people kinda suck nowadays lol.

You're saying I'm stupid for paying for it.

@@LyonsArcade nah the guy that charged you for it is stupid. You are judt a sucker for pinball machines. I can forgive the latter of the two XD

Will that drive up the cost of the asking price? If you have to put a lot of money into it?
@LyonsArcade4 жыл бұрын
We kind of get the same price no matter what it costs to fix, people are hungry for machines and we pretty much just price them about the same, usually sell each one as soon as we're done.

If the playfield gives you gonorrhea Ron, is that caused by having dirty pin Balls?😁

Of course you will fix it, hence the video.

I actually have a LW playfield that I used to learn some about playfield restoration. It looks way better than this one. Would you like it? Im not going to do anything with it. I'd be happy to donate it to you if it would help. Im in St Pete Florida, if that makes any difference. I can email you pics of the playfield if youd like. Cheers!

Kind of unrelated, buy youtube has gone nuts and inserted full 6 minutes long video as "commercials"...like inserted full unwanted video into one I want to watch....
@LyonsArcade4 жыл бұрын
There's a whole thing going on with the ads, basically if someone skips the ad, the person who made the ad doesn't have to pay for it... so I saw one ad, it was 6 hours long. A 6 hour long ad! I don't know how they even got it to pass whatever youtube's system is, but somehow some ad buyer was playing a 6 hour long ad in people's videos, which meant that nearly 100% of the ads would always be skipped, but people would still see the ad and he wouldn't have to pay for it. It was for a song, that was looped over and over again for 6 hours. They also do ads based on what you watch or where you went, etc... so the ad they always play for ME, is for St. Jude's children's Hospital. Which are like 6 minute ads, telling the story of sick children. So I'll turn on a video and be working, and everytime an ad pops up it's a 6 minute ad about a kid with a deadly cancer, over and over again. for awhile last year, every ad was the same ad about 'men's soap' and they cussed in the ad, it was 5 or 6 minutes long too, worst ad ever.
