Nice work! This was one of my all-time favorites (along with Bump N Jump, Pole Position, Turbo and Pac Man). If you poke the pterodactyl in the mouth, it kills him and you get massive points.

Solidly in my top 10 all time 80's Arcade games. I probably put enough quarters in Joust machines to pay a utilities bill. I was good not great at playing it. Also the Cabinet artwork is in the top ten all time for 80's video games. I don't ever remember seeing anyone put a half dollar in a Joust machine? Has anyone seen that? Great video as usual. Anything good Joust related always gets my attention.

I used to work at the arcade when Joust was still new. It was the game I could play and not spend any money during the slow times, the trick was to get one of the enemies trapped in the flame hand and to kill pterodactyls until you got a ton of extra guys. When I'd get busy I'd either sell my game for the original quarter or let one of the kids that hung out without any money play until I got some free time. I won local tournaments in Donkey Kong Jr and Dragon's Lair but this was the game I played the best on,

Very cool Slammy, I figured there were tricks to it :) I was always the kid with no money all you experts gave free games to, ha! I played Dragon's Lair a few weeks ago and couldn't even figure out the first scene! Did it take you a fortune to get good at it, or were you just good at tracking it down???

@@LyonsArcade They had Dragon's Lair set up by the office and I watched others play it, I memorized most of the moves. First time I finished it I got the high score, there was an elevator that would drop 3 levels sometimes and you had to risk dying to see if it worked. Then you got to the point where you threw the sword and died until your last character, it was the most points possible (I think), we had 3 people with the exact same score but I was the 1st to get it. They removed the pterodactyl trick in later versions of Joust. I could kill them in the air but it was far from guaranteed (they'd switch heights last second if you didn't fly even). Whenever I did it someone would almost always remark it was the 1st time they saw someone kill one.

Joust is such a great game, and it seemed to lend itself to home adaptation. I remember playing the Atari 8-bit computer port a lot--it was a fantastic adaptation. Even the Atari 2600 version was pretty good.

Joe post more arcade board repairs I like when you're using your logic probe and schematics to hunt down the failures, I rarely see you post new videos. If you know how the vector boards and motion object circuitry works explain how it draws the image on the arcade monitor, Give more theory if you know it in the videos.

interesting fact on the joust mini arcade system people hacked into the game system and found out you can play defender on there because it is hidden in the code. you can't play it on the joust mini arcade system because there is not enough buttons on it but people put the game hardware into the rampage mini arcade system which made a fully playable defender mini arcade system. some people even printed out custom artworks to make an unofficial defender mini arcade system but after people figured out how to access defender an official mini arcade system was released with defender on it by default. the official defender mini arcade system is made by basic fun and it is part of their arcade classics series

yes watched in early in the morning today you changed the 556 timer chip to fix the sound, but I haven't see you post in a long time. I miss seeing you with that logic probe with the schematics hunting down the problem. I would like to see more daily or weekly would be nice. I don't often see you fix or troubleshoot pinball motherboards or driver boards but I have seen the more mechanical switch pinball machines. I'm guessing you don't fix repair pinball machines pcb boards from the 70's and 80's.

I mentioned it in the other video.... after we did this little bit we figured out that you couldn't enter your initials after the game was over... the joystick would stop working but would work fine during the game! It ended up being a bad PIA on the widget board.
@johanlaurasia
@johanlaurasia 4 жыл бұрын
I think you meant 6821 PIA, not 6521, as the 6809 processor in that unit used the 6821 PIA (and yes, Peripheral Interface Adapter) is what that stands for. I've worked a lot on Radio Shack Color Computers (1 thru 3) and those used the same Motorola chip set.

Is swapping the original monitor for an LCD considered an upgrade or a downgrade? People do it but I think originality gives it a more authentic experience.
@LyonsArcade
@LyonsArcade 5 жыл бұрын
I prefer the original CRT's but sometimes you have to put an LCD in depending on the situation. I'd always consider it a downgrade, but if all you have is a CRT that's in really bad shape it would be an upgrade to go LCD. Some games you can't put an LCD in for lag reasons...

I mean when you're fixing an arcade game even if its working or you got the pcb board to work can walk through each section on how the arcade board works CPU ,reset circuit, RAM are doing, what the EPROM chips are doing, how the vector section works, how the sync signals work. Explain more theory if you know it would be nice to learn from. What are PROM chips used for in arcade games stuff like that to explain the theory on how arcade boards work would be nice youtube videos.
