Agree with other contributors here, this channel is absolutely the ‘gold standard’ for measuring specs of pro-sumer audio interfaces, and so forth (well that’s the things I need help with understanding!). Thank you so much Julian, this is a properly useful review, and you deploy exceptional education and technical skills, and equipment, I don’t possess. What you’ve done for audio interface reviews has no equal. Funny that there have been so many well funded media outlets that don’t do what you do. Maybe they don’t have the know-how. I do want to see an Apogee Duet review done to your standards. Mostly because I’ve had one for years and I’ve always found the sound to be so good. I do hate the one knob design with the breakout cable. It’s just dumb, dumb, dumb. The one I have is too old to connect to an iPad and it has me seriously thinking about a new one. Something without the breakout cable. I wouldn’t have bought the Duet if it weren’t for the fact that my EMU and my Focusrite stopped being supported one after the other. The sound of the Duet and the fact that I bought it so long ago and it’s still supported really made me happy I did buy it. Right now that Motu looks so tempting as does the audient evo to a lesser degree. The Audient is a bit cheaper and more portable. If it had more gain they would get my money. Anyway, keep up the good work. It’s nice to see someone young and intelligent using his abilities in a way that’s good for musicians all over the planet. We live in such a great age in so many ways. It’s really a worldwide Renaissance. Shame we haven’t figured out how to squash pandemics and the many forms of ignorance and apathy.

It's because as a "proper" business, they need to keep the articles churning out, so quality suffers, and it's just a pretext to advertising anyways. Real deep dives can hurt a product, hence they don't go there. MusicRadar keeps LITERALLY RECYCLING the "best studio monitors" article for years now for example. It's basically linkspam.

I really love your reviews; my only advice would be to comment a little on both Mac and Windows drivers - I've found that sometimes it doesn't matter how good the performance is if the drivers aren't up to scratch. This has really impacted the Audient, for example, and recently the Motu.
@JulianKrause4 жыл бұрын
Hey, I totally understand your request to talk more about driver performance. The problem I have with that is that it can be very different on different PCs. My experience might be quite different than yours. I have used some many audio interfaces without a problem and yet some people report that they are running I to some issues with the same interface. I don't think I can make a representative statement about driver performance. That's why I usually don't talk about it.

Ty Julian, i recently bought this exact interface (I'm from Italy and on Amazon all the main audio interfaces were all sold out obviously), without having found any honest review online: well I was very surprised and your review confirm my impression. I also love the little interface buffer setting widget that installs with the driver that lives on the toolbar. Few days ago I replaced my Scarlett 2i2 3rd gen with the M-Audio Air 192|14 based on this review. I needed more inputs than the Focusrite had. At first I turned my sight onto higher Focusrite models, but one feature erased them from my interest: they are controlled by software/drivers only. For me - a Linux user, almost all Focusrite interfaces was eliminated therefore, and 18i20 was out of my budget. After weeks of research, comparing features and watching reviews I decided to buy M-Audio Air 192|14. It has all the features I want: 1) Physical knobs/switches to controll all functions, 2) Class-compilant - no special drivers for Linux required, true plug&play, 3) Desktop design (vs rack design). For now I'm very happy with this device, except some minor backdraws: - MIC gain behaves strange, almost all gain is placed between 9,8 and 10 on the knobs, no dedicated on/off monitoring switch, only the input/usb knob. I got used to the Scarlett on/off button. No gain knobs for line-ins. Now I have all my devices (microphones, DI box, guitar processor, reampbox) connected to one unit and I don't have to manipulate cables - this is something I hate, and still have 1 mic input, 2 line inputs, and 1 line output free. As for the sound quality I didn't noticed any major differences. Regards!

@@kevc6115oh thanks for the review. Do you suggest the ID14 or ID4? I'd be pleased if you share your thoughts about that.

@@efecanaltn4963 I am over the moon with ID14 MKII. The sound quality is excellent. It is easy to set up and the software is very simple to use. I use it in Windows 10 along with Cubase 9 & 11 also Ableton Live 10. I have had no issues at all. It is worth noting that there have also had a few firmware updates from Audient since I purchased in February. I cannot comment on the ID4 as I have not used. The ID14MKII allows you to ad more channels through ADAT using a mic pre such as Behringer ADA8200 or the Audient ASP800 or ASP880 for example. From the research I have done, mainly from Julian and also Podcastage among others, the Motu M4 or M2, The SSL2 or 2+ or the Audient, you cannot go wrong. It really depends on the feature set you are looking for. The ID14MK11 is the only 1 that allows to expand the number of channels. My suggestion to you would be to creat a check list of features you want and list them in order of priority. Then go through each of the interfaces and check off which you want. Shortlist your top 3 then go and research through different reviewers on you tube, gearslutz, reddit and so on and see if people are having issues and if the companies are responding to them. I hope this helps you.

Perfect timing haha. I actually just ordered this a week ago, currently waiting for it to be available. Decided to snag one because of the high preamp gain for my gf to use dynamic mics for voiceover on videos. While I upgraded my interface to the UMC404HD last year, the hand-me-down M-Audio Fast Track Pro didn't want to play too nice with her Mac and Premiere Pro. Figured some modern drivers would help, and might as well get more dB for the SM58 and the new Podmic. Glad to know that I wasn't far off the mark with the purchase decision there! Great work as always!

Due to this video I just purchased it from Amazon new for $109 USD but it is OOS until the 29th. I bought a pair of head phones and a BM-800 kit (came with the two XLR cables needed) and still came in under the M-Audio kit that didn't even include a stand/arm for the mic. Had it had that I would have bought it. I just returned the Neewer 8000 USB as it had a high pitch whine (low level) and with everything cranked up I had to touch it to my lips to get the audio to 1/4-1/2 in Audacity. Defect but I had enough with USB only mics so my world will open up now with XLR. Not expecting the world from the BM-800 but it is a start for now.

I had this and used it for few months 'professionally' and privately, and I agree with Julian Krause, that while this is not the best, but it's really good enough, especially if you remember that this interface is one among few cheapest interface which can go 192 kHz. I never use 192 kHz, but that made me consider that M-Audio had serious effort in designed and manufactured it. The buttons, especially the volume button is one of the best feel you can get compared to the others, even the expensive ones. Although unfortunately it's limited number of inputs mean this interface also only has limitation in how we use it. Anyway, Thumbs up for a relatively cheap if not one of the cheapest interface out there. I saw the price is getting down too. And the driver is still ok for newest version of Windows which means it's even a better buy now. Thanks Julian Krause for a great review.

I've actually been listening to music on this particular interface and comparing it to a DAC which is rated as one of the best sounding DACs under $200. Having audio playing back to both devices at the same time and switching between them, I really couldn't hear much of a difference on any of my studio monitor headphones or IEMs. The IEMs I tried are 16ohm as well, which SHOULD be worse case scenario for higher output impedance, but any differences it may have made were inaudible to me. It's also quite a bit louder than my standalone DAC as well, so I don't even need a headphone amp anymore. I think just for the DAC and headphone amp alone, it's well worth $110. Since Julian Krause also measured it as having one of the best stereo separation out of the lot too, I am eager to try this with balanced headphones at some point too using the balanced outputs on the back. At this point, the XLR and instrument inputs are just icing, but with a decent input sensitivity and low noise floor, it's probably well worth $110 for an XLR interface as well (I'll be able to test that myself this weekend when my new mic arrives. It's definitely a solid buy at $110 USD.
@JulianKrause3 жыл бұрын
Just FYI, the balanced outputs on the back are line level outputs and not designet to power headphones. Only the headphone output on the front will properly drive headphones. Cheers!
@ulfrinn87833 жыл бұрын
@@JulianKrause Yeah, I know line level input isn't supposed to be enough to drive headphones, but without the balanced outputs on the back, a balanced headphone amp is useless, which is why I didn't get the NI Kontrol Audio 1 for the same price. But, just out of curiosity I did plug some IEMs into the back output, and got more than enough volume out of it. One channel only of course since I was just using a 3.5mm to 1/4 adapter to test the output.

The RTL list is useful but at which latency the device starts to lose packets? Did you experience buffer errors while testing RTL?

Oh, Lord I remember this when I was making music years ago and I never could get that old PC to go below 14ms (12 was iffy at best) and it was felt for sure. I had to use ASIO4all and that is not all that great YET Behringer has now switched to it to save costs so I never even considered them (plus I know them, and used them, and purchased them over the last 15 years and mediocre at best). I hope this doesn't use ASIO4all for the low latency work.

Wow dude, this was thorough. The dynamic range would be a problem with recording drums but for the price (I'm looking at the 192/14) seems worth it.

Very informative video, as usual. Torn between this and the Focusrite Scarlett.

Very useful review Julian, thanks! I'd like to know, between the budget m-audio, Motu and Evo you've reviewed if there is a "best one" just for recording classical music with condensers mics. Also, most important, how their sound performance in preamp+adc compare against recorders like Zoom f 4/6 or Sound Devices? I'm leaning towards one of the latter, more convenient as they can be taken out live everywhere without needing a pc, but still the interfaces could be used with an iOS devices - a little bit more complicated but still doable. So what interests me more is the sound quality - no overdubbing, no low latency needs, just achieve the best .wav file at the end of the day. Thank you so much and good work!

the predecessor 'm-tracks 2x2M' is the same and has around 7 dB higher dynamic range, same is true for the Air 196/6. Still works with Sonoma in 24 on Mac cause it's class compliant, so no driver hassle :) You can find them for cheap used, mainly the 2x2M MTrack is far underrated. Not only if you're on a budget, that's a great choice.

Hi Julian - fantastic work. Really. In terms of detailed audi gear reviews this is the best on and off youtube. Any chances of reviewing Audient interfaces - in particular id22 and id44 - I understand they share the same internals and many people swear by them especially in comparison to the much more expensive stuff such as Apollo Twin and Apogee. Best!

Thanks for posting. Are you planning on doing a review on the M-Audio AIR 192|14 for those of us looking for a few more inputs?

@Julian Krause Thank you for your work, those informations are perfect. Didn't you think about providing ASIO latency information? Thank you
