This ship is the Pride of Calais - built 1987. She was only the Ostend Spirit for the last few months of her life. Many millions of people travelled on her between Dover Calais in those 25 years.

Oh wow, I remember going on that ferry when I was little, coming back from France with my dad's old Transit van full of cheap booze. We went out on the Pride of Calais, and it was a very clean ship. Everything tidy and working. We came back on the Pride of Dover which was the same model of ferry, but a total shit-hole. Grubby carpets, litter everywhere, and the big TV in the kids play area had a hole smashed in it.

This was 'The Pride of Calais' from P&O, bought by Transeuropa Ferries last year, which went bankrupt, that's the reason it's being scrapped prematurely.

It's a scrap yard. Boats at the end of their life cycle are beached and then taken apart for scrap. The boat on the right is what will happen to this one.

Beaching is quite common in the third world countries. Vessel owners are required to decommission and dismantle their vessels in a proper manner under maritime law which is hugely expensive as it is also dangerous. However, scrap metal traders welcome the beaching of vessels at certain ports where the vessel is not properly decommissioned and unsafe, the owners claim insurance and the traders get the metal. It's highly unfriendly to the environment as chemical waste and oil is leaked into the sea. Owners hence give instructions to crew to beach these vessels .

Are planes being brought to be scrapped the same way?
@Nfarce
@Nfarce 11 жыл бұрын
Due to the fact that they actually have to be flown into their place of scrapping like a regular airplane (cheaper to fly them to a "boneyard" as it's called for aircraft than disassemble it and truck it or train it to the scrapping facility), the answer is no.

***** Well I like to think humor can show people just how stupid it is to be sexist, racist, homophobic, etc by the sheer ridiculous nature of the statements. Maybe I put too much faith in humanity when I assume the majority of the people who make these jokes in an obvious joke format don't actually believe in the things they say, and that others can discern the difference (or at least, if the "comedians" ARE serious, be able to shake their heads and understand how stupid that viewpoint is). Long story short: The actual jokes and their content can be racist, sexist, and the like. The difference lies in whether or not its intended effect was negative (or neutral/positive). That being said, there is such a thing as doing something in good taste, which many people don't have when they make jokes like this. The reason I replied in a vitriolic way to obd is because I assumed (perhaps wrongly, and if so I apologize) that they believe the first commenter is actually misogynist which is a serious judgment call on a person I cannot make from a simple joke (if they are, truly, it is my mistake). It has seemingly become so common recently on the internet to just call people misogynist outright, and I flew off the handle. That said, I believe my message is still valid.
@ParCheesy
@ParCheesy 11 жыл бұрын
The whole concept of satire revolves around the fact that it is a gross exaggeration of the subject at hand in an attempt to bring attention to it. Think of Dave Chappelle doing "white face" on his defunct sketch show. Was he attempting to perpetuate and justify racism against black people? Was he attempting to continue some peoples' prejudices against white people? Or was it something else? The basic formula in all of comedy is that someone ends up suffering in some way; either minute or large, imagined or tangible. Does the "justifying prejudice" opinion apply to all humor for you? Or just the areas you deem convenient for your ideals? On the grander scale: A person is a fool if they judge a person absolutely based solely on one something so trivial as race, gender, orientation. If comedy adversely affects someone in a negative way, enough to make them see these imagined merits of prejudice, they were stupid all along. What you've implied is that everything is black and white in this area of communication, and that humor does not ever do as I've said. That's too absolutist for me, and I will never see it that way. Anyway. I respect your opinion enough to understand that I am not likely going to change it. It's mostly about learning of other viewpoints and I have seen viewpoints similar to yours enough recently to know that this isn't going to go anywhere nicer. So farewell and, if you respond, I will read it but I may not reply.
