Maya, that Tamil concept you were referring to around 26:19 when you brought up the word “Kadabul” reminded me of a beautiful John Muir quote my partner once read to me while we were backpacking in the Sierra Nevada Mountain Range: “...full of God's thoughts, a place of peace and safety amid the most exalted grandeur and enthusiastic action, a new song, a place of beginnings abounding in first lessons of life, mountain building, eternal, invincible, unbreakable order; with sermons in stone, storms, trees, flowers, and animals brimful with humanity.” Let me clarify that while John Muir did some incredible work for the environment, his work and words also clearly depict culturally accepted or inherited racism towards Native American Indians during his travels. He used disgraceful language towards natives, and while that sits very heavily with me….. As a native to California myself it’s still never lost on me that because of his environmental work we have protected wildlife areas in Inyo National forest that are home to some of the oldest living trees in the world. They’re called Bristlecone Pines. 👀 Anyways- long story short: your curiosity and bravery to face the realities of living within humanity are not lost on me. I have so much respect for you it’s NUCKING FUTS. Lastly, Thanks for making Kala. 💃🏼💃🏼💃🏼💃🏼 I first heard it in 7th grade at our school dance, and your music and art hasn’t stopped circulating back into my life since. uh so I'm From SA and when MIA mentioned that thing about Tamil people and gold in South Africa and firstly I was flabbergasted because I had never heard of anything even remotely like that. anyway I was intrigued AF so I of course googled and only one article relating to this I could find (not that I was searching hard but from what I can tell its not something that's well documented or written about or at least that's the impression that google gave me) firstly i got a warning sign befor I went to the site about me not being safe any more I proceeded anyway and read the short article saying basically what she was saying with a little more detail but still kinda vague and weirdly phrased sometimes. but anyway the place she mentions is definitley real and also kind of a well known ish place like when she said i was oh yeah (it just took me a while becuase she was pronouncing it I asuume the correct way) the way we pronounce it is informed by afrikaans so it sounds different and i wasnt sure what she was saying. so I finally see that word "Komati" derived from "komates" i google to see exactly where it is or what it is and it literally shows me on google maps that theres a road with the same name just in my neighbourhood 🤣 thats all I came here to say. weird experience.
