EN
Seventy-three
Months spent alone inside this tower
Solitary
Princess of a broken kingdom
Seventy-three
Floors made of stone and iron trapping
Lonely old me
Waiting for someone brave to come here
Seventy-three
Heroes that tried to liberate me
All gave defeat
That might explain why tears are falling
[["tears are falling, tears are falling" echoes]]
And then from at the gates
I hear him calling calling
"My princess don't despair
A hero's come to free you"
His eyes bleed hard with hope
As I wave smiling smiling
I clutch my chest and cry
"My hero, save me won't you"
My heart is pounding breathless
To know a hero is on the way
My knight in shining armor
Whose courage pushes the dark a-
Seventy-three
Minutes that I've been watching him climb
Only for me
That fact alone is motivation
But it can't be
He took a blow against the dragon
He's bleeding free
Just counting time until he weakens
Seventy-three
Heroes like he that fell before him
Can't bear to see
That might explain why tears are falling
[["tears are falling, tears are falling" echoes]]
But then I hear his voice
He's even laughing laughing
"Don't worry Princess
Such a scratch could never stop me"
He's rushing up the stairs
His armor ringing ringing
Its sound is like a bell
That sets my soul afire
My heart is pounding breathless
To know a hero is on the way
My knight in shining armor
Whose courage pushes the dark a-(way)
But then I see him stumble
Onto the trap that marks his (end)
I touch my tear-stained window
And whisper thank you my dearest
(FRIEND...!??!)
My face is flush with fear
He somehow made it made it
He's gotten past my traps
The monsters that I gathered
He'll soon have gotten here
And then he'll realize it
The princess he so loves
Is really an illusion
He's banging at the door
He doesn't get it get it
That if I'm rescued then
I'll lose what makes me special
So I unsheathe my claws
And gently pull my mask off
The door swings open and my
Breath of fire fills the

the japanese lyric at "he doesn't get it get it, that if i'm rescued then i'll lose what makes me special" was actually "if i leave, the story meant/made for me will be lost"- which leads me to believe this princess is faking her whole life in order to maintain her legend. The destruction of her kingdom may be a hint that she is not actually be the princess but someone who took over and feigned the role- or if she did destroy it, it was in order for her to create a story like this to the outside world. (kinda.. like self-victimizing?)

You're right! Not only is it hinted at in the Lyrics but in the image as well! Her mask has dragon horns on it, her dress ends in a curling spiky tail, her hand holding object (the uhh...Helmet? Stone heart? Whatever that is) are clawed. The red flowers as well since in many different media red flowers, butterflies, red eyes, etc, are a symbol of an underlaying horror and untrustworthy force or being. And of course the obvious blood stains and how her body is postured are also pretty incriminating evidence that she ain't a kind face.

I find it interesting that the knight never has any lines to himself. The princess always sings along to what he says, which further reinforces the idea the princess has done this before. She remembers their lines and echos it.

@@HiCringe basically the princess want to feel special, so she set a trap and monster around her. Acting as damsel in distress. Hoping for knight to save her. She count every knight that death when they desperately trying to save her. And even they managed to get into princess's room, they will get killed by the princess herself. Because if she is saved then her story as princess is over. That's what i got.
@on_the_periphery

This is a pretty fun song. I love how the different colors of the subtitles convey different ideas--the red being the fearless knight, the light blue being the princess's spoken words, and the white and light purple being the two different types of internal monologue given to us by the princess. The song's ending is ultimately a cynical subversive take on the captive princess, which has been pretty popular of late, though usually in the idea that the princess can save herself. The fact that she is ultimately a kind of villain is intriguing, and is reliant on what she believes makes her special, which I think hinges on the very concept of the princess in the tower. In most stories that involve a princess to be rescued, the hero or the main character chooses to save them because they're, well, the princess, and they've been kidnapped by some evil forces. We're given an idea about who and what kind of individual they are just through that, and because we assume that the people that kidnapped her are the bad guys, then it gives us a goal and reward: to defeat the baddies and ultimately rescue the princess. But that's just it. We assume her characteristics even though we've never met her, and its this very idea that the princess is this flowery, charming, fanciful, and beautiful person that we're given greater motivation to save someone who we only conjure up in our head. This princess on the other hand is inherently monstrous, and she's the heir to a land of ruin, she has nothing except this tower full of traps and monsters that she gathered up; she's lonely because there's no one left, she has nothing left except for the tower, and the only way that she can convince others to come fill that loneliness is by spreading rumors of a captive princess in a distant tower, and she can only manage that by singing to the knights for help, and using the mask to hide her very essence. That's what makes her special. She's more of an idea than anything tangible, and she leads the knights to ruin because she's lonely, and that's all she has left to give. If she's ever saved, then the charade is over, she loses what makes her special and what is left beyond her monstrous nature? She's stuck in this eternal paradigm of wanting to be saved, of wanting to be with others, but being unable to be saved due to her very nature, which is why both of her internal monologues, though disparate, are valuable to her character.
@ShawnsLegacy
@ShawnsLegacy 5 жыл бұрын
I agree, it's really powerful stuff! I think the most powerful part of the whole thing for me was the way she kept repeating the number of heroes that have died in their conquest to herself. It almost strikes me as though she's gotten so desensitized by the whole charade, that the only thing that keeps her even faintly entertained is counting the number of heroes she's lead to their doom, thus making her all the more unsettling as a character. I would love to see this be adapted into a full-fledged game, something like a Mario look-alike to lull people into a false sense of security by presenting them with something familiar at first.

So I know Japanese, and I think it would be interesting to talk about the difference between both sets of lyrics. (anti-spoiler space) In the Japanese version, there's no "my traps" or "the monsters that I gathered" or "I unsheathe my claws", not even the smug "He doesn't get it get it", so the listener doesn't know that the princess means harm until the very very last line. There's one foreshadowing point in the Japanese version too, the "tears are falling" being "one more drop of tear has fallen" instead, so they might be crocodile tears or maybe it's that the princess is out of tear? The window isn't tear-stained either. (Edit: "one drop" → "one more drop")
@doublex85
@doublex85 5 жыл бұрын
_Mata_ hitotsu = one _more,_ not just one. And koboreru is in nonpast tense so it's "one more tear _will_ fall (for the 74th's death)," so yeah, definitely foreshadowing. Actually I was surprised that the Japanese lyrics don't explicitly count 73 months or floors or minutes, though it is explicit for sacrifices. Maybe I underestimate a Japanese listener's ability to read from context. Also surprised there's no Japanese translations for the English-only lyrics. Seems a shame.
@ten.seconds

Okay, so basically she's a dragon princess lady imprisoned in a tower, waiting for a hero to rescue her. her kingdom is destroyed, probably by her or the dragon guarding the tower. she wants to be rescued, but because of her dragon form, can't let anyone see who she truly is, so realising that if the hero sees who she truly is (and might run away and tell other people to stay away), she decides to kill the hero. it's a sombre fate for the hero. she did not know how the hero would have reacted, but she panicked and probably saw no other choice.

My theory is that because it sounds like 2 women singing throughout the song is that there is both a dragon princess and a human one both singing about the same things but in different contexts, it could because of insecurity or the addictive thrill of being "reacued" over and over again that she simply kills the heroes.

My interpretation is that she isnt human anymore She isn't captured she locks herself away because people will care about her if they hear about the "trapped princess" so she surrounds herself with traps, monsters and a dragon to give the impression she's a princess in peril, it's a quest that was meant to be attempted but never succeeded. The more heroes fall the more heroes will come to not only test themselves but to be the hero and she's surprised someone made it through and is afraid that once shes rescued she'll just become another princess married to the hero, nothing special and fade away to obscurity so she kills the hero to keep the lie going

Here's my take: The whole thing's a metaphor for a fear of commitment. The 73 princes are failed relationships. So many have tried to get close to her, only to fall to her defenses - her monsters and dragons. She's come to expect it, to the point that she isn't surprised when yet another is hurt. But he pushes through, not once but twice, sure that she's worth the struggles of a hard relationship. It seems like it could finally work... ...but she can't accept it. She's meant to be alone, or so she thinks. So she breaks it off herself, and just keeps on as she's done until then, 74 times now. Or maybe not. It's a compelling story, even at surface value. That's just the impression it left on me.

@@RushWheelerit may be not only about failed romantic relationship, but also platonic ones. She could have pushed away her potential partners, friends, and family and was left alone in her "tower" (which can be a metaphor for her mind, that she doesn't let anyone in).

Personally, I like to believe that 74 had his shield out. Because I think the song works really well if you interpret it as a metaphor for depression, imposter syndrome, self hatred, self harm, and lashing out. 74 is someone who actually knows and cares about the Princess, where as the previous 73 were people who didn't really know her, at least not the real her. That's why 74 makes it through everything, even surviving things she expected to kill him. Because they were enough to deter the people who just liked the idea her, but 74 is determined because he's not here to rescue a princess from a tower, he's here to help a friend through something. She's afraid of rejection, but 74 already knows the truth, and he doesn't care. She's not a monster, she's a person who's hurting. It works on multiple levels, too. In the level where she really is a dragon and he really is a knight, he's able to overcome all the obstacles because he knows her and knows what to expect. The dragon didn't mortally wound him because it knew. At least, that's how I choose to interpret it.
@veemarcia
@veemarcia 3 жыл бұрын
I love this interpretation, thanks for sharing!
@Lordlos9
@Lordlos9 2 жыл бұрын
I guess that's a simp way of interpreting it, to keep trying no matter how poorly she treats you. You're not noble for sacrificing your own self respect for the pretty princess, you're just sad and pathetic for not slaying her once finding out the truth. You want to work through all her pain and suffering because she's beautiful and your lust is taking over, you wouldn't do this if she didn't APPEAR worth the effort. So even the one who UNDERSTANDS her, who would likely not tolerate such a monster in any other form is only tolerating the evil because it has a pretty face. Hence why he slew other monsters and dragons just to get here. To me it seems like she's just not worth the trouble but the hero was deceived by a pretty face and hurt because of it.

I think it's a metaphor for depression. The princess wants to be saved from her tower (healed from the illness) but she has this gnawing feeling that being trapped is what makes her special (how many people with depression sometimes struggle with thinking their depression is a part of them that they'd lose if they got help) and thus she prolongs her own suffering by extending her entrapment through her own traps and monsters (prolongs the illness by refusing help) and it results in more and more knights being killed (the refusal to get help and the turning the illness into part of their identity ends up damaging their real-life relationships)

I'm a sap so I was hoping for Knight 74 to find out the truth and accept her. "I'll lose what makes me special" is heartbreaking - lady, you're a dragon girl! You can do so much more than this! But instead she makes herself suffer more and more ... A great story can satisfy you or leave you wanting more, like this one. I can't say if a continuation is needed or not, but this world really does intrigue me!

I feel like Toby Fox chose the instruments with care to make it seem like it is played inside the story. The drums seem to be the hero rushing, the bells are the armor ringing that is told to sound like a bell(2:02), the voice is her singing and the door is the door(2:50) ! Also at "tears falling" it echoes like if there was a word painting of some sort ?! The tears make the sound I guess ? It wouldn't surprise me that it is on purpose since he did this in nearly all of his works, if not all.

something about the story in this song makes me rather sad the princess in this case really seems somber about the whole affair... it's like she's turned this whole thing into a game to distract from the isolation. a small part of her sounds like she wants to be saved but, the actual idea of being saved leads he to panic. in a twisted sort of way I can see parallels to people dealing with relationships in real life in this song. the song doesn't necessarily have a deeper meaning. but its interesting regardless

Now I think about it, this song is basically the antithesis of the don quixote novel. Don Quixote is a fragile old man who thinks of himself as badass knight. The princess in this song is a badass dragon pretending to be fragile princess. Don Quixote ends up by Don Quixote accept reality and come back to his home. The princess here still living in her delusion at the end. Don Quixote feels special when he acts as a knight protecting a lady. the princess here is a princess who feel happy if a knight tried to save her . Don quixote is just normal old farmer, your everyday peasant. princess here is dragon princess who actually rule over monsters ( the part where it said monster and traps, in jp it said shinuchi that means officer/elites meaning the monsters are her underling) , that she is not normal nor she is a peasant.

Except, for each life you reach a certain point that you must die, then you restart the levels with different stats/inventories and the one of the appearances of the 74 knights. Sometimes you die sooner, sometimes later. Obviously it would get boring doing the same things over and over again, so perhaps other fantasy elements like items from previous attempts, or spirits (of past knights? or of slain beasts?) could speak of mere fairytales, warnings, or encouragement. The closer you reach the end, the louder you hear a roar echo from the top of the tower, and the more you hear her singing (I guess you could say she fills you with DETERMINATION). Before the final trap, you walk through a tall dark hallway, and a white dragon's tail whips and knocks you down. You have a brief battle with it, never seeing its face, but eyes, glowing in the dark, and you spot some drooping rich cloth stained with blood. It leaves before reaching a climax. That was your last warning. The final trap is a large room with no exit that you must force into creation to find the stairs behind the walls. On the way up the stairs dimly lit by torches, you can see the dead 73 knights either acknowledging your determination or calling you a fool. You've already passed through a dragon, so what else could be there? Believing it fled because of cowardice, you bang on the door. You are asked several times of your certainty. At this point, the ending could go one way or the other. Fight or die. Answer yes, and your life flashes before your eyes the moment you see the princess in her truest form as a burst of fire melts you to death. The princess puts her mask back on, and holds your corpse in her arms, weeping, but eerily satisfied with your resolve. That was to succumb. To the other ending, to resist: Answer no, you side with suspicion, swinging the door open and standing to the side, a flame nearly scorches your skin. You face the princess, who understands your change in feeling and becomes angered that you didn't die wanting her. If you lose the final fight, you hear how much she adores you but hates you for trying so many times. She awaits the next hero, the next to-be-fooled. If you win, you have the option to spare or slay her. Spare: She reasons that if you return without her, you will lose your reputation as a hero, and be recognized like a failure, a humiliation. She strives on other's curiosity and remains a mystery. Yet, you treat her wounds and show her the items you collected throughout the game that actually belonged to her. Depending on what the items are, she might decide to restore the kingdom with you. Slay: Her life ends instantly. The mask does not recognize anymore life on who it's possessed by, so it snaps to your face, showing you a vision of several nobly-dressed people in the room. You felt no other effect until taking off the mask. Feeling a sudden growth in your fingertips, your vision becomes sharper, and you figure out exactly what you are turning into.

i really love this, wow. not just the subversion, but the princess' perspective and genuine panic as he approaches- not that he'd be able to hurt her, but rather that he'd realize what she really is. she kills him before he could see her. ngl i wish the entire song was in romaji, though.

other people recognize the part from Welcome to the CITY too! it's crazy lol. tobias, tobias, you sly fox.... ok overused but had to do it at at least one point lol. but also, i love this song. the way it was _executed_ is just so amazing. the percussion and all, it's astounding. i got literal chills at 3:22 when the release of the percussion let you know that _this_ was the final, grand moment. simply beautiful toby. one day i hope i can make songs as emotionally powerful and provocative, as well as just as awesome. and amazing vocal delivery from itoki too, the crispness(does that sound weird lmao) and tone of her voice, along with the emotion.... it's... IT'S...... epic. lol

The symbolism of the background art in accordance with the music is incredible. White, usually correlated with innocence and purity is only visible through the window. Behind the scenes, those very symbols are dyed in red (both through the flowers and her dress), the color that represents the love, passion, and valor of the knights who come to "rescue" her.

God this sounds like one of those early days Vocaloid ballads along the lines of Cendrillon or Synchronicity or SiGRe or basically anything by Mothy. From the mixing to the lyrics to the duet parts, everything about it feels like it came from that era and that fandom. NJ you two.

Wow, that's a hell of twist to reveal in a song. It's interesting how the previous lyrics take on new meaning after you know what the twist is. His armor 'ringing', like an alarm bell.
