Also, I like the cardboard bases, because this gives me something to build off of WITH said Heroscape terrain :)

This really is a lovely fusion between Heroscape and Magic the Gathering. Elements from both games seem to work very successfully together. Exciting indeed! =]

I'm picking it up this weekend, am looking super forward to it. This comparison made me pumped to try it out. If this takes off in a good way, the level of decks and color combos could be absolutely outstanding!!

Hasbro has already said they would NOT be using the "Blind Booster" model, this wouldn't be pay to win. This would be "set" expansions and possible ONLY terrain expansions to keep the price point of "sets" low. This was stated at Essen :)
9 жыл бұрын
Chris Peach I hope that is true as this game is not worth forking over mass amounts of cash for boosters.
@vmrenadi9 жыл бұрын
+Levi Thornton I've played magic for 15 years, blind boosters aren't something I'm opposed to as long as they're affordable, non-painted figures would be a fair compromise I think.

+Ivan Peterson They already announced the 1st expansion at PAX, not blind so they have held true to their word.

One thing I noticed in this and another review you provided. The game does not end automaticly in some scenarios(Team & free-for all) because a Plainswalker is killed. If you have summoned troops still on the board. You are no longer able to draw or play spells(pg.7, under Plainswalker rules), but you can still win if you manage to destroy your opponents units with your remaining troops or have more points if the game goes to turns, unless I'm mistaken. Other than that, I feel like you did an excellent job of describing the game and I now have a better appreciation for of both games. As an long-term collector and player (20+ years) of Magic: The Gathering, I didn't realized how much I would've liked/loved HS until now. I'm grateful HS was there to pave a way for this game, though.

I'm not very attached to Heroscape: all the times I played it was with my friend's collection (he has a several plastic tubs of the stuff). I enjoyed it, but not enough to justify the huge cost of buying an out of print game. Compared to Heroscape, I actually like this more. The goal of killing your opponent's planeswalker gives the game much more focus compared to HS. The summoning and movement rules also make the game move faster. Now, there are some tactics that this game promotes that would be impossible in Hersocape. Since you are moving a single squad each turn and don't have order markers, you can use a single squad/planeswalker multiple times in a row. I think this is a good thing, though. Not only does it smooth out the pace of the game--each turn has less components--it also ups tactical considerations. Is it worth overelying on a single unit/squad? After all, if you press them too far up by themselves, they'll be less supported and will die faster. It also has that dynamic from Summoner Wars, where using your planeswalker in combat is a viable tactic because of their power, but is riskier because they are easier to kill. No offense to Heroscape fans, but I would much rather play this than Heroscape, and this game is much more affordable. I think my only complaint about the quality is actually the incredibly flimsy cards, but I had plenty of penny sleeves lying around. As others have pointed out, there's plenty of Heroscape terrain available on eBay or what-have-you if the cardboard terrain bothers you.

If Tom says that this game has the potential to be the next Heroscape then I'm on board. Besides I've always been wanting them to put Heroscape back in production.

Tom get some clear plastic CD sleeves with flaps (100 micron) for those Heroscape cards. Works like a dream and if you're feeling froggy you can heat seal the ends to make them spill proof without going the laminating route.

How much of each tile of Heroscape terrain do you recommend buying to build decently fleshed out maps? Also, where would you buy from?

I have the magic set with expansions and I have heroscape. Me and my other half both enjoyed the magic more then the heroscape. The cards just add an element to the heroscape game. Helps when you're in a stagnant or stalemate situation

This just makes me want to start adding more Heroscape expansions to my collection. If Planeswalkers takes off, I wonder if that'll drive the Heroscape packs up or down.

Sadly, Heroscape prices will just continue going up because of their increased rarity. I only hope that, if this "new" game catches up, WotC launches expansions that could be used in a common HS round.

CaptainBlaze MC I know that. That's not my concern. My question was what effect the success of Planeswalkers will have on the price of Heroscape expansions on the resale market.

It is a bummer that there were only the 2 expansions beyond the base game. I appreciate that members of the community made conversions of the rules and cards to be compatible with Heroscape. It is a lot of fun on its own, but since every squad is unique and you are limited to color, there isn’t much you can do to build interesting armies. I like to play with multiple copies of the game and ignore the uniqueness of the squads. Heroscape is expensive and this game is regularly $15 or less. I’ll eventually get Rise of the Valkyries, but it’ll be a while. Right now it is just this and the Marvel set for me. 😅

As a veteran of both Magic and Heroscape, I am very much looking forward to getting this and making some house rules to fully integrate it with Heroscape. When it comes to colours, I mean, come on. Jandar - White Vydar - Blue Utgar - Black Einar - Red Ullar - Green. I mean, obviously. Maybe you could pretend that the Soulborgs are artifact creatures, or that Aquilla can be summoned by anybody, or something like that.
@Xn70009 жыл бұрын
+holydiver233 I don't totally disagree, but I think you're a little off Jandar - W Vydar - U or U/b, depending on where you're looking at him in the storyline Utgar - B/R Einar - W/r Ullar - G/w Aquilla G/r Varkil - B or maybe B/r there wasn't enough development of the character or his units to really figure that out Most units would have to be considered on a case by case basis, and a good half of them would probably require a point cost adjustment (a bit like how heroscape and mavelscape don't quite mesh).
@holydiver2339 жыл бұрын
I agree, dual colour generals fits their personality much more, but having it just one colour per makes it much simpler, and keeps Red from being so overused. Einar is defiinitely R/W though, I mean, they're just like the Boros Legion. (and, well, I never collected D&Dscape, so I never had any Valkrill units anyway)

As a MTG and not a HS player... it doesn't hit the mark for me (right now). I think I'd rather go with Mage Wars for what I want from a planeswalker duel.game. Thanks for the comparison! =)

azraelswrd You should take a look at Summoner Wars too. It's a little less involved than Mage Wars but it's a terrific game. Much more so than this.
@solodragun9 жыл бұрын
Exactly my thought. If I were someone looking to spend some cash on a card/miniature skirmish/duel board game, you can't go wrong with Mage Wars. This to me feels like WOTC trying to get a piece of the Mage Wars pie while pulling in some of the Heroscape fan base as well. To anyone thinking about getting this game that has not played Mage Wars, pick it up first. Lots more meat. Then again if you're looking for something far more simplistic and faster to play, this may be a decent option.
@windweaver777 жыл бұрын
I own multiple copies of all three expansions. 28mm miniatures at less than .25 apiece. You'd be a fool not to buy a bunch, even if just for dnd use. The fact that several are already painted ( albeit poorly) is just a bonus. The game itself is fun. Even beginning players can pick it up ( except the deck building. .. that part slows down the new players and boosts the learning curve) This game was about three expansions away from amazing.

I'm a huge magic the gathering fan and just recently found and bought a cheap heroscape set. I actually bought the set minutes before your videos came up for the magic the gathering board game. So i can honestly say that I'm not excited for this game. Here is my reasoning: well first and foremost I'm a little aggravated that I spent $60(which is half the price as the base set online) for heroscape when heroscape "light" is coming out for half the price. Another big issue is that after playing heroscape a few times and really enjoying myself, I have no drive to buy this game. It just makes me want to buy more heroscape(which I definitely plan on doing). I love magic the card game but I can't see myself buying this although it would be so much cheaper to get into now than heroscape.
