I recently picked up the main game for $15, the 1st expansion for $5, and this expansion for $9. All brand new! I can't wait to start getting into it! Feel like I got a good deal since heroscape (which I've never played) is insanely jacked up online from 3rd party sellers.

I wish they made more expansions. Mainly for more figures. Magic has so many options. The possibilities for this game were huge. First mistake was waiting too long for the expansion.

Great review, I am not a magic the gathering card player, and I completely love this game. I am however a long time heroscape player and generally play most if not all my games of this on heroscape terrain.

I have two boxes of each release this way everyone can use all the cards and all the squads and units as well. It also gives me terrain and glyphs and boards to use as well.

Jace being forced into having a certain squad seems to be a theme in the game, since it was the same case with his illusions in the first game :P As someone who never actually played Heroscape.... I'm honestly tired of people always complaining about the lack of terrain. Like... I get it, there used to be a game that was basically the same thing, but had that. This isn't that game, this game is more about the spells, and I can't help but feel like things would just get way too complicated if it had all the extra terrain stuff on top of all the spells and effects.

GRex7777 I agree the lack of terrain doesn't really matter but, the rules on common units and unique needs to be addressed. I would love a larger scale game. When I play card game magic I always have lots of creatures.

While I know it's not a popular thing, if you have all sets to this game, you can have things be MASSIVE. My friend and I did a 1V1 game where we just equal split ALL the creatures, and even ran several planeswalkers. We just split the creatures between the planeswalkers themselves, so if that walker went down, so did all their creatures, and you got 1 full turn for each walker you had, spells were also split according to the planeswalkers. The game lasted about 3 hours. lol

Lemme think.... if I recall (cause it was a while since I did the massive game) I had Sorin, Jace, Liliana, Gideon, and Ob Nixilis. In a normal game though I'm usually running Sorin or Liliana, but I also spend a lot of timing just running eldrazi in the all vs 1 variant from the Zendikar expansion.

Sorry to reply again this late, but I just remembered something that will likely make a difference in the super game thing. I actually have a double set of the base terrain. Not 2 sets of the game, just 2 sets of the base stuff. We didn't use all of the terrain though, just both sets of the basic so we didn't have road tiles or the weird black terrain, but this does still mean we had 2 extra base boards and a few extra bumps. (D&D buddy found the base game and the BFZ expansion for like... $15 total as I recall, so he got 2 of each, one full set to just play the game, and another set just to pull the minis out of and store in his D&D mini boxes, so he gave me the terrain and cards left over from that)

Great addition to AotPW. Like Tom points out, why don't we have any common creatures yet? As far as complaints about not enough terrain, we bought a bunch of Heroscape tiles on eBay for cheap and won't play the game without it, just makes it that much more fun.

I just bought this on Amazon for $5.78 as an add-on item (other purchases over $25). With prime two-day free shipping, that is a steal! Not trying to sound like an Amazon commercial here but they have some incredible deals. I also support my local board and video game stores, so they can stay open and make a living. I don't mind paying extra for brick and mortar stores at all. I'm looking forward to trying this out and if it's good, the first game and expansions are super cheap.

The lower unit cost is great. Though even at 600 i still find myself just wanting to do Lilliana + Eldrazi Shrimp + Eldrazi Hulk + reanimating zombies. I think 700 may be a better target.

Dual color decks are good in Magic also (good to have a balance of two various powers/creatures in you deck).

I think you miscalculate the use of the black card Behold the Beyond. It is a common misconception for people to see that card and believe they must actually discards their hand...as in thinking they need cards in hand to use this effect. Rules as written are obey the effect of a card. is you have 0 cards in your hand your hand size is zero but it still exists. You could play Behold the Beyond while having a now 0 card hand and draw 3 cards. Yes, it does sound pretty broken...then again black is pretty broken.

Jace is still the Blue Planeswalker in the shadows block. The only other one is three colors which I don't think they want to add atleast yet.

I don't like that they reuse artwork from regular Magic, but with different abilities. Playing Magic and this game actively may get confusing, if you try to know cards by their appearance.

big change between his thoughts in this video and the ones from the previous expansion when he said the game was dead and wouldn't get any more expansions. I really think that one of each sets is a very playable game. Two of each makes for a great game. I'm thinking that we will likely get one big box and one small expansion a year. Hasbro seems to have a constant system for things like this and it does them well. Keep an eye out for a Walmart or Target exclusive version in a few months that will come with extra stuff like more terrain (they did it with the original starter set, I'm sure they will again).

i just got the game and it’s fun for about 5 minutes. you burn through your cards in a few turns and you can only take one or two squads or a squad and hero at best. for the setup and space it takes, there’s just not a ton of actual game here.

Whats with the cost of cards? How do you pay them? Since you dont make any "money" during the game..you just play them. And what about the hitting points shown on the army cards..and the direction of figures (little picture on the card with grey hit places)..that is very poory eplained in the manual..so we just ignored that

The spell cards are soooo much hit and miss when it comes to the flavor. Many of them don't even make any sense in the context of what the spell actually is (I LIKE that they are different from the tcg sometimes though, when it's done well and still fits the spell in the context of this game).

Innistrad is all about Vampires, Spirits, and Werewolves. Jace is the golden child of magic, its doubtful they will ever kill him off or NOT print him in a set. And as you know, blue has been traditionally control. Deck manipulation and draw.

Rick Halpin it's both. What they call a "standalone expansion". You can play the game with just the stuff that comes in this box or combine it with the original AoTP and Zendikar expansion.

Hmmm, looks like another Hasbro / WotC quick buck scam and sticking it to the gamers with creating a game ( original Arena ) , one ( 1 ) expansion ( Zandikar ) , and then a re-boot. Game needs terrain AND expansion pieces, not a re-boot! Bought the original Arena/Planeswalkers at Target for $10 with discount/discontinued stickers on it...writing is on the wall folks, no GENCON announcements for the game is pretty telling . . . .

Greg Smith target clearances everything, often quite early. They clearance movie toys before movies even release sometimes. How is it a money grab to offer something that can stand alone or combine with the first? Wouldn't a cash grab be releasing it where you had to buy other parts to play it?
