I use this knife as my garden buddy. I find it cuts my nylon twine pretty quickly but I use the other end, not the serrated part for that. It was cheap, only $8 and easy to find while in the camping section of Wally world. If I ever lose it, I’m only out $8 and if I’m in a survival situation, some knife is better than no knife.

First, I should find out what the grind is. The type of grind and the angle of the microbevel would need to be known. I'll check into it. It wasn't super sharp out of the box.
@rld12784 жыл бұрын
There are heat treating techniques that can be done on any knife to soften or harden the metal for different purposes...
@m005kennedy4 жыл бұрын
Definitely. This came from a sheet that probably was tempered correctly. The knife is then cut and sharpened. People make knifes out of circular saw blades by hand. You go through the whole process of cutting out the shape then sharpening it. The trick is to never let the metal heat up because it will destroy the tempering of the metal. In the case of making a knife from scratch you usually remove the tempering because it will be easier to work. The knife is made out of thicker stock and be profiled. Then when the knife is shaped the tempering process is done to achieve the correct hardness. The knife is then sharpened and ready for a handle.

I took the paracord off to use on something else and the fire starter is probably worth a couple of bucks. Was kind of disappointed to find out the rod is not all ferro rob, buy only about .100 diameter stuck on to a bigger magnesium rod. Still usable, just would rather have all ferro rod.

Ozark Trail makes decent enough multitools for cheap but the 12 piece set is like a backup for the backup. Even if you sharpen it really good it will not keep edge retention and go dull very fast. It seems more like a knife you would take the paracord handle and attach to a stick to make a spear
@m005kennedy3 жыл бұрын
I agree with you. Some people have gotten upset and me saying they are light duty. Certain if I was stranded somewhere I would like these over nothing but Ozark Trails does have better knives as you have said. When you are talking knives lower than twenty dollars it is really hard to beat a Mora knife. They have some very good knives starting at $11 .

hate to tell you this, but a mora knife is basically made the same way stamped from a metal sheet.
@m005kennedy3 жыл бұрын
Do you own a Mora knife? If you did you would see a tremendous difference in the way these blades are made.The Mora is made much differently and its Scandinavian grind and the bevel it has it much more superior for working with wood. It is also easier to sharpen. The handle on the Mora is better as well. The paracord handle is not as good on you hands if you are going to use the knife much. It you decide you need to remove the paracord for some use the knife will be even more uncomfortable to hold. Spending $6 more for the Mora Clipper would be a better knife. The Ozark Trail is fine for light duty. I’ve bought much better knives at Walmart for ten dollars than this one.

If your buying this knife for the cord, you have no business stepping into the wilderness.
@m005kennedy2 жыл бұрын
If this is the knife you take into the wilderness you should stay in the Walmart parking lot. My point is paracord handles are very uncomfortable and they can come apart when you don't want them to. Also the instructions with paracord knives usually say you can use the paracord for cordage and that leaves you with a knive even less comfortable to work with. You wouldn't seriously pick this as a survival knife would you?

all seatbelt cutters i see are straight or curved edged blades, so i find your alleged facts about serrations suspect. so far after watching 6 minutes of this review, i get the idea your only reason for nocking this knife is its stamped ozark trail. had it been a mora, you'd be in love with it.... for $9 its fine for everyday use.
@m005kennedy3 жыл бұрын
It depends on your use. This is a fine light duty knife. Serrations are superior for cutting rope , cardboard and many other things. Having serration is not so good if your primary use is working with wood. The part of the blade you use for carving should not be serrated. I was trying to point that out. If you find yourself more in urban/suburban serrated knife might be your best bet. If you are in woodland areas and expect it to be used for wood a strait edge is better. That is the opinion of most people who have used knives a lot. I didn’t make that up. Read about knife, survival, and bushcraft and you will see it repeated often. And comment about seatbelt cutters.are talking about the cutters the usually put at the back of the knife that is recessed? That design is to protect people from getting cut using it or the person from getting cut wearing the seatbelt. I’m talking about the main blade. Some knives used by first responders have both a serrated edge and a seatbelt cutter. People who anticipate working with wood rarely have serrated edges on their blades. A Mora knife would be superior for working for wood. It is thicker and has a Scandinavian grind. That makes it much better for working with wood. If you want a knife that might be used with wood a $15 Mora would be a better choice. The Ozark Trail is fine for a light duty knife that is primarily going to uses for wood. I have both and I agree with knife experts regarding serrated blade for certain uses and the straight edge Scandinavian grind for wood working.
@robbijohnson69833 жыл бұрын
I never liked serations on the blade they are a hinderince to the user and quiet useless.
@m005kennedy3 жыл бұрын
I think most people who primarily use knives for wood, bushcraft, and hunting agree with you. If spent a lot of time cutting rope, twine, and fibrous materials you might prefer the serrated. A lot of EMTs and other first responders prefer the serrated because of the possibility of cutting seat belts quickly.

Since it came with a sharpener that should tell the user off the back that the knife needs to be sharpened most likely out of the package. Maybe you should of sharpened the knife before testing its cutting ability. Tbh I’m here cause I got the same knife which I assumed wasn’t going to be top notch quality but I had walmart credit so why not I needed a back up blade on my bugout pack, but out of the package I was able to cut through that heavy thick plastic that contained the Ozark walkie talkies I also purchased very easily so I’m thinking like most of these type of products some come sharpened & some need it at least they provide a sharpener that’s all that matters to me & for the price it’s silly to over observe the layout & construction of the blade. I know I’ll make it work for whatever I’ll be needing it for as a back up blade that is. Great review though thank you.
@m005kennedy3 жыл бұрын
I think they came sharp enough. I think most people would actually dull their knives trying to sharpen them without learning how to do it correctly.
@christianjames12293 жыл бұрын
You do not know to test the sharpness of the knife obviously😂 you gotta cut it from the top of the paper about two inches from your finger, other wise the paper will move lol. And the serrations aren’t for cutting rope, it’s for sawing off branches
@m005kennedy3 жыл бұрын
Serration are for cutting rope, seat belts, and whatever. If serration can’t cut rope or cord the won’t saw much of anything. These serration are much too small to cut anything you could not easily break. Saw teeth are much larger than serrations.
