the big issue is that most of these tanks have never been put against the BEST of the "enemy" tanks so real-world comparing on the battlefield (WHICH IS MUCH HARSHER then numbers in a sim) is essentially impossible. there are things you can generally infer based on common sense and what has gone before (LIKE RUSSIAN tanks are especially easy to maintain and are made to be very reliable). but for the most part, we will likely never see a super upgraded M1 Abrams vs a T-14 Armata unless a massive escalation happens.

I think a major contributor to a negative opinion about Abrams is the fact that while M1 isn't really used in other militaries except the US and some of its allies. Instead, most well-developed countries use Leo-2 and frugal ones - anything Russian. While there are a lot of factors why those tanks are more popular, that doesn't really make Abrams worse.
@wooflessdelta4 жыл бұрын
Yeah, because the other countries don't want to use the Abrams due to fuel. It's a massive fuel guzzler, but it does its job well. So does every other NATO tank, but for different needs.
@marks74844 жыл бұрын
@@wooflessdelta well, not only. Most well developed countries either use their own mbt (UK, France) or use leo 2, witch were easy to get after collapse of soviet union and large cut in defence spending for germany. Large amount of Leo 2 were sold at factory price, and most of the spares too. Now, it is easier to get a new fully equiped leo 2 at a cheaper price and easier to maintain ,than a barebones version of Abrams. Fuel consumption is also a big no-no for some countries. And like I said, frugal ones buy russian tanks, since they most likely can't afford even a barebones Leo 2.

What could be interesting in this series, is to compare all vehicles with their attributes with others vehicles in order to show which got a concept right or wrong compare to another, stilling in the tactics they were created for: Armor and Firepower Focus or Hit Probability Focus, because comparing 2 vehicles of different conception tactics could lead to an unstoppable debate, like comparing an Abrams with a Leclerc, because 1 was created to be a Wrestler and the other as a Kickboxer, 1 for heavy weight resilience and punch and the other for agile accurate hit. But I do really like to see with your apointment the characteristics of our actual tanks, since for the past 1, it would come for the same serie.

Fun fact: K2 actually combined both Eastern (Russian) and Western ( The US) due to Soviet Unions bankruptcy in 1991. One year prior to the bankruptcy, South Korean government decided to loan 3million USD to Soviet Union. So, they can build the long lost diplomatic relationship again (cause USSR = supported North Korea and communism) After Soviet Union became Russia, which still had to pay all debts when it was Soviet Union, decided to pay the 3 million dollar loan with Russia's weapons (Russia did pay some with raw materials and USD dollars, but they were simply not enough). In South Korea, we call this incident 불곰사업 (literal translation : Red bear business/ dealing business with the red bear) During the first phase of the business(1995~1998), South Korea received FULL SPEC 33 T 80 U, 33 BMP3, 70 Metis M atgm with 1250 ammunitions, 50 Igla with 700 ammunitions. The second phase (2002 ~ 2006) included importing of: 2 T80UK (K stands for command vehicle), BMP3 with thermal upgrade, 156 Metis M atgm with 11500 ammunitions, 3 Munera hovercrafts, and some il103 and Ka32 A. The third phase deal, which is still on going and has changed its name of business to 한-러 군사기술협력 사업 ( South Korea and Russia's military technology cooperation business) and it is still on going. Hence the reason why South Korea operates an armored division solely made up with T80 U and BMP 3s'. Also the reason why the US knows Russia's technology (after South Korea received T 80U, they invited US military specialists to examine the tanks together and discovered Russian tanks had higher military tech then the US anticipated) I believe Russia's transmission technology has greatly helped in making the K2 tank, but I have to look into this with more detail which part of K2 was heavily inspired by T80 U. PS: the deals themself are still controversial among the South Korean society. Russia's technology vastly improved and even lead to invention of 신궁 (pronounced as Shin gung), a portable anti air missle like Igla, 천궁 (Cheon gung), Korea's mid range SAM. However, some say Russia overpriced their military equipment and accidents regarding Ka52 is quite frequent... and the South Korean army has difficult time in procuring the weapon parts. Additionally, think of the logistics nightmare! So technically, the US was the only winner in the business, cause they managed to examine Russia's tank technology for free! ( cause US is the and only closest South Korea's ally. So South Korea invited the US to examine the tank together by literally removing every single pieces from the T 80U)
@TheArklyte4 жыл бұрын
@@ausfyausfy2455 Wouldn't be surprised if they were overpriced exactly because it was anticipated that americans would show up and start touching everything. Problem is you had to give it all up for free. If you have no use for them, send them to Taiwan... and blame russians for importing it when chinese will have a fit about that. Poor guys can't buy anything because everyone is too afraid of China and unlike you and Israel, they apparently can't start their own tank industry.

Personally, I think the M1 Abram is one of the tanks near the top of the list. Though, I believe it does fall short due to it being quite old. It has been in service for a VERY long time now. Certainly many moons ago, especially after being fitted with the 120mm: I would have said its the best tank out there. It featured lots of forward thinking design, it was implemented well, and it preformed wonderfully when given the trial by fire. I think a testament to how good the tank is would be how hard it is for it to be replaced. Its still plenty capable of filling its needed roles and looks pretty while doing it. Something not too many tanks have had the luxury of doing considering that we've seen some designs become outdated in 2 years, or in some cases: Before the first units roll off the production line. The Abrams has stood the test of time, she's earned her marks. I believe it deserves to be called one of the best MBT's out there. Though I believe that we're starting to reach a point where we should start to look into creating an "M2" variant that takes the design that worked, improve on it, and upgrade as needed. Though, we all know what happens with military budgets these days.... it will be inevitably fucked up (I'm looking at you Zumwalt).

I'm designing a hover tank I think you'll like. While the general issue with hover tanks is that they require tons of power, my design uses hovering as a way to bleed off excess energy from an engine that's basically a mini blackhole. As for armor: it doesn't have any and instead relies upon a shield projected by the same technology used for the hover. The cannon is supposed to be a sort of auto cannon railgun thing that minimizes recoil with yet another piece of hover tech. Two things that I thought would make sense for it's design: 1. when the capacitors for the gun are fully charged, your acceleration is increased as more power is being bleed off by the hover engines 2. The hover field and shields that would just be invisible gravity fields are visible because of light being refracted by the gravity, in the same way that light bends around a blackhole, anything shot at the gravity fields (including laser weapons) would be either bent away or just pushed away like a magnet Also: because the craft requires almost no armor, there's no need for fancy cameras to look outside the vehicle. It could have a windshield and car doors but still be more resistant than the Doomslayer I'm thinking the crew would be 1 commander 1 driver 1 main gunner 1-2 anti-infantry gunners 1 engineer to keep checks on all the tech And maybe a radio specialist. I'm thinking that with a max crew of 7-8 it would have to be big but with no need for armor or giant tracks, along with its ammo just being metal rods, it would be smaller than most main battle tanks
@raidertheknight48514 жыл бұрын
I like this concept mate, that is very creative and cool! I am curious about the massive crew? Why does it need so many crew members? Does it not have large amounts of automation and robotics? Could the anti-infantry weapons be controlled by a computer or artificial intelligence? The job of the Radio Specialist should probably just go to the Tank Commander! I can understand the idea of placing the Engineer into the tank or at least I think I got a rough idea as to why he is there. Although, he probably should be left behind at base and away from the combat. Unless the tank is experimental or is utilizing less reliable components that necessitate the field engineer? Otherwise, this is a very cool idea! Keep up the creative and cool concepts mate!
@dadbear53164 жыл бұрын
@@raidertheknight4851 I was thinking it would have a larger crew because of greater availability of space,the larger your tank crew, the better you can recover. @@knightofficer uavs arent able to replace tanks, I hope you realise that. Left and right brakes are the toe brakes on my rudder pedals (could have put the steering on the rudder axis, but you end up getting a workout.) Turret control and views are all on the joystick. It's all very customizable and im not sure why more people dont play this way. For me, I dont type well and have to look at the keyboard... so keybindings for tank movement are a nightmare. You should do a series on the more overlooked technologies and facets in tank design and life: e.g. optics, armor styles (explosive reactive, composite, etc.), projectile types, engines, crew space, how they live in the field when not driving, how field repairs are done. that type of stuff.

I think the Abrams is a solid tank despite its age, however its age and load limit are becoming an issue as mentioned. Of course, we don't really know how the Abrams will fare against another modern MBT (and hopefully we never find ourselves in a situation where we have to find out), but there comes a point where a machine has to be replaced despite how effective it is because it's too far behind the times.

As far as the engine goes, one really has to ask himself, if the higher consumption of fuel is offset by a less noisy engine. After all it means, you need to move more fuel supplies around, to keep things running. The upper armor plate of Abrams is not composite, so newer rounds might have an easier time penetrating it due to improved penetration angles. Other than that it had some problems, that are fixed by now, like inadequate air filtering for the engine, lack of independent comander sight, lack of thermal sight for the comander. So it's hard to predict, how the tank will develop from this point on.

M1 commander didn't have periscope, only being able to use coaxial MG on cupola whit 3 times magnification. Commander could have access to first generation thermal vision of gunner. M1 Abraham's armour was rated in the beginning 350-400mm vs apfsds and 700mm vs heat in hull and turret. M1A1 haved longer turret whit more layers of ceramic being 450mm vs Apfsds and more than 800mm vs heat. M1A2 have the depleted uranium layer which increase protection vs kinetic energy being around 800mm and 1500mm vs heat and get CITV for commander. Good thing's about Abraham is survivability, mobility and fire power whit the 120mm gun. Bad things is its weight, week front hull sow its harder to use M1 on the attack against more modern rounds (in golf war Arabians T72 were the hold T72 Ural and T72M and M1) and how expensive it is but M1 is ez to upgrade which is good. Nice vid

unlike in video games, armored vehicles fight as parts of a combined arms team. this is where the M1/M2/M109 (and AH64, etc), shine. the blend of FPS, capabilities, vision, comms, and target management add up to make each system greater than it might be alone. At 50 years old, these systems are reaching end of life, but still...no one is volunteering to be on the receiving end even now.

As a tank crewman from 1968-71, my experience is on the M48 in Vietnam and the M60 in West Germany. Crew training sucked. Even in the line units, no one set a standard and trained people to meet it. In Vietnam, we used mostly canister so precise aiming wasn’t important. In Europe the threat is an enemy tank so you better have your gun sighted to shoot at point of aim. I don’t remember any training to bore sight the gun or to see if it was on target at the range. If you missed, it was your fault.

I read a book called Tank Sergeant, written by a Ralph Zumbro ("Zippo"), who was supposedly with (IIRC) 1/69th in the central highlands in 1967-68. His descriptions included about a 50/50 mix of HE and canister, although I'm having trouble confirming anything to decide if it was a questionable memoir, bullcrap fiction disguised as a memoir, or pretty solid.

The Abrams is definitely a good vehicle, among the best in the world. Also its almost impossible to determine the "best tank" in the world. Like there is no such thing. Every tank designed for the same purpose, but with different priorities in mind, to meet the needs of the country designing it.

Given a choice for an M-1 , I would take an old Chrysler model XM1/M1 105mm preferably my old one SN 0056 ;) Named it - "Death Machine" as I was in a Delta -Arm Co at the time. It could do 63+MPH, and the gun could hit a horsefly ;) at 1500m and do a Robin-Hood shot as well. I was on M1/IP's and M1A1 's, worked on M1A1 Block 3's/SEP (basically M1A2'HA's), so I know of 4 of the "model's. I'll take an old one.

the firepower of the tank has been greatly enhanced due to the ammunition and breech. The M256 smoothbore takes the gun tube from germany, but everything else, the breech, MRS, and recoil system is American. The Sabot has received updates and is on its 4th generation design now, the breech on the M1A2c and B have a digital link system that is designed to work with the new "smart round" that replaces the HEAT, MPAT, and CAN rounds. Greatly easing the logistical burden for the Army. the M1A2C is also now 80 tons compared to the 70 ton predecessors, with increased frontal protection, as well as the ability to mount both active protection systems and reactive armor on top of its tough passive armor. Currently the M1A2C is probably one if not the best protected tank in the world and is still very lethal with its 120mm gun and advanced ammunition. This is Probably why the US Army isn't in a rush to replace it just yet. Currently even with the T-14 Armata and T-90S, there isn't an immediate need to field a replacement yet.
@madkabal4 жыл бұрын
@Dwarov 1 okay I don't know what Russia propaganda site you are repeating this from but you don't know what you're talkin about. the m829 A4 is specifically designed to two defeat hard kill systems you mentioned the round is so powerful that the back deck of the Abrams nearly touches the ground when it fires. Its so powerful that one round is counted as five rounds in the mantenance record when fired. And yes the new Advanced multi-purpose round that is designed to work in conjunction with the ammunition data link in the new breach replaces the heat round the impat and the can round it was literally the reason why they developed the round, so that tank Crews don't have to have multiple rounds in the ready rack anymore they can have one of two rounds one for killing tanks and one for killing vehicles or troops or bunkers depending on how it's programmed and can kill tanks as well so they don't have to quickly switch out ammunition in the middle of a tank fight. As for your t-72 being better tank how many t-72s have to be burning to The ground by an M1 Abrams before you have to convince yourself the truth, the t-72 and its variants is completely outclassed, this is why the Russians developed the t-80 the t-90 and finally T-14. just your comment about the heat not being replaced on just shows you don't know what you're talkin about the US Army stop buying heat rounds, YEARS ago.
@madkabal4 жыл бұрын
@Dwarov 1 wow. so much bullshit to swim through its hard to know where to start. My god you Russians have made propaganda to an art form. First off the M829A3 was designed to defeat Russian ERA, the M829A4 was designed to defeat Russian APS you are intentionally confusing the two rounds like a propogandists does. The M829A4 doesn't need a dummy warhead, its designed with more propellant and a thicker sabot for increased speed and penetration, NOT having an explosive warhead gives it the advantage, there is no warhead to detonate prematurely, the only chance an APS has is to knock it off course or at least make it a glancing blow, if the round is fast and strong enough and IF the APS intercepts it, it will going through the intercepting projectiles like a hot knife through butter. The M829A1 does not make the tank arch back. I would know, I was a tanker for 16 years and I've fired a few. Now on the Advanced Multipurpose Round. Yes it does, replacing 3 rounds is literally the design function of the round, giving the US Army a logistical edge in war which was the goal of the project. thats why the Army calls is a "smart" round. Its a round that can be programed to behave differently, it can depending on the ammo subdues explode on contact like a heat round, delayed penetration explosive like a MPAT round or have air burst fragmentation effect like the MPAT when in air mode, and because it can be used as a Fragmentation round, it will replace the CAN anti personal round as well. I would know I'm a tank mechanic for General Dynamics, I got the job after I retired and I work on M1A2Cs, you literally have no idea what you are talking about. Hell you can find out what the AMP round in conjunction with the datalink does easily enough, its not hard to find on the internet, try not to use RU sites. On to the ATGM. Dude, the M1A2C does not fire Anti Tank Guided Missiles. Im going to say this again, the M1A2C does not fire ATGMs, the breech is not designed for it, the fire control system isn't designed for it the CROWS which is getting a ATGM mod for Strykers isn't designed for it on the M1A2C, there isn't even a "TOW" button anywhere near any station in the M1A2. You are pushing blatant lies now. Now for your T series tanks. Yes those designs were meant as replacements. However Russia not meeting budgeting goals was forced to scale back plans to replace their tanks and have instead funded upgrades, they have done this with the T-80 T-90 and the T-14. The T-14 was originally planed to be "initially mass produced" with 2500 units. Now its been cut to 100. With Russia announcing they will fund the T-72B program instead. HEAT rounds. Now Im starting to think you are illiterate I didn't say the Army doesn't use HEAT rounds. I said THEY HAVE STOPPED BUYING THEM. Look Russian propogandists, im going to give you an English word for you to look up. Ready? Stockpile. Type in Stockpile in your dictionary and learn what that means. The US Army Stockpiles a shit ton of ammunition. One of the things that separates the US Army from other Armies' is that the US Army truly understand logistics, so when they approve of a round for a gun, they buy a fucking shitton, and they keep a large stock pile that is never used unless they really have to, such as a full scale war or a budget collapse. And of course the US Army uses more HEAT rounds than Sabots in anger. Duh. The last tank on tank fight was 2003. And the last US Army M1, not Egyptian Army, not Iraqi Army, but US Army M1 tank that was deployed in a combat theater was 2010. I would know I was in that fucking unit. Dude, you completely failed. you started off well, mixing up facts of something else that could easily be confused because of a nomenclature detail, but then you pushed nothing but lies and even gave tanks capabilities they never had, then started to ignore timelines saying facts that you thought would counter what I said as if you don't know how to read. Give up man. You made yourself look really silly. Have a nice day, and I hope one day you decide to not be the stereotype.
@deafsquid69782 жыл бұрын
What the best tank would be likely depends entirely on what you think the most important factor in a tank is.
