In my opinion, certified refurbished is the only way you can go preowned. Those Amazon renewed and eBay certified refurbished products may be a bit cheaper but they’re not much cheaper once you factor in battery replacement. Also, Apple tests the internals to make sure there’s nothing wrong, plus they give you a one-year warranty and the option of AppleCare plus. Yes, Amazon renewed and eBay certified refurbished include return options but it’s nicer to have a reliable product that you don’t have to worry about breaking in the first place.

Try it for yourself: Step 1 - plug in an external monitor (does not matter if it is over HDMI, DP over USB-C or an USB-C to HDMI adapter) Step 2 - run any full screen video on the external monitor (has to be full screen) Step 3 - open a PDF file also in full screen on the internal Macbook display (also has to be full screen) Step 4 - raise the brightness to around 90% on the internal screen Step 5 - click with you mouse anywhere on your external screen and leave it there (to get the mouse focus on the external screen) Step 6 (optional, flickering can already start) - wave slowly with your hand in front of the camera of the Macbook. Step 7 - enjoy the flickering mini LED display of your 3k Macbook pro :D

I also have a gaming pc with a 12-core i7-12700k and a 3080 and really they are all just plain fast as hell. What’s most impressive about apple silicon however is the battery life and how they are dead silent all the time even if I’m ending videos on my bed just smooshed into the comforter. @@jamescassar5348 I feel like the big KZbinrs are just running benchmarks and timing video exports and not actually USING the laptop. When I’m editing a video it doesn’t get hot or loud or slow. Only when you’re done editing and then export/render the video does it get hot. But that’s just how exporting videos has always been. You set the thing aside and have a meal or something and by the time you come back the video is done. I edit like maybe 10 videos per year I don’t care if it takes 5min or 20min to export. I care that the editing workflow is snappy and responsive which it is. (My then $3k 2014 dual core retina MacBook Pro was mad slow). Regarding the ssd speed, I keep my Final Cut projects on an external SSD so I can chose to edit on either the 16” or the 13”. So I never actually write large files to the onboard ssd. Even if I did though, the read speed of my SD cards is slower than the write speed of the onboard 256GB module so it literally wouldn’t make a difference. And just because it’s half the speed of the 512GB doesn’t mean the user experience suffers. At least not that I could tell. Also I use safari. I haven’t done back to back testing with chrome so I can’t comment on any differences. I constantly pick up the air and tell my fiancé “this thing is just so amazing I can’t believe it”. I’m an engineer in the Silicon Valley and I work on consumer electronics. I spend A LOT of money on tech and I greatly value better user experiences. Even with my very high standards, the base spec M2 air is a top recommendation from me.

I am dead set on riding out my 11 year out ThinkPad til it croaks. I had a M1 Air, nobody talks about all the things that still aren't supported with the new M1 silicon because of how Rosetta works. I just remote to desktop when I need more than basic functions and It has a 5950X/128GB RAM/4080. I highly respect your sentiment on these M2 products. M1 will probably be supported just as long as M2 as IIRC, they are both based on the same ARM standard, neither supports ARM v9 specification. So getting a M1 Mac for 500-1000 off is the way to go. Its really hard to justify spending that sorta money on a Macbook in 2023 when it doesn't even support AV1 encoding. I doubt the M3 will either since the M2 is based on the A15, the M3 will be based on the A16 and the M4 will be based on the yet to be released A17. That puts The M4 as dropping in Q4 2024 or Q1 2025. I don't know about you but Intel and AMD by next year will have CPUs with 32-48+ threads on laptop, with 30 hour battery life, better encoders, AI accelerators and iGPUs that are comparable to a 3060/2070. I almost bought a M1 Max with 32GB of RAM earlier this year but once I really thought about it, there is little other than looks that justifies anything more than a base M1 Air and especially the M2 Air. I am not dogging the technology at all, its nothing short of a miracle what they have done. But the rate apple is moving at, its been almost 2.5 years since the M1 Air dropped, if you bought one back then or even a M1 Pro/Max MBP you got a hell of a bang for your buck but unless Apple can really push for 3nm chips by the end of this year in an M3 Pro line and 2nm in 2024 they are going to get gapped by stuff thats sub 1000 USD. Right now I can go to amazon, buy a Dell 7920 with a 12700H/3060 and 64GB DDR5 and a 2TB SSD for 1,800 USD, I can also buy the same laptop with a 3050 and 8GB of RAM and a 256Gb SSD for 850 and upgrade it myself for a total cost of 1200. I have friends with that and a MBP 16 with 64GB of RAM and a 1TB SSD....the Dell won more things than it lost and it has a 500 nitt 4K touch display. And its super friendly to the user being able to fix just about anything wrong with it.

I think it's easy to fall into the "future proofing" trap - like you don't just want the M2 because you export in 5:30 vs 6:45 but you want to believe that buying the latest hardware will better serve you on year #4, #5, #6 or more if you're planning to do that. I think where that's really difficult right now is we don't know what kind of advancements we can expect from Apple. When you bought an Intel machine you kind of knew what you were capable of, and after 5 years where stuff was gonna be. In 5 years who knows where Apple silicon will be, maybe we're at the 10-20% advancement stages, maybe the M3s will bring some radical new performance. The question is does it make more financial sense to buy the base model, expect it to go strong for 4-5 years and then use the savings from upgrading to that new model sooner? At this point I think so.. especially because in order for me to really feel that future proof I'd probably want 32GB RAM, larger SSD, which with Apple comes at a huge premium. Talking like 3K for that, so in 3 years if the M1 Pro is really somehow long in the tooth I can just go ahead and sell it off, use the $1500 I saved and I'm guessing a lot of that stuff will trickle down (more RAM, higher base storage, etc) AND that machine 3-4 years down the line is going to likely destroy the M2 you tried to future proof.

$1539 for a refurbished 14" Mac Pro isn't much of a savings off the new ones. The new ones were going for $1599. I imagine it's still possible to pick one up in the next few days if you hurry.

I've bought next to new macs from pawnbroker the last one being an M1 13 mbp with 512gb hd and 8gb of ram for £800 it's box in mint condition, rather than paying £1350. Same with my Samsung s22 256gb model ultra mint condition at far less than retail price. Both these items work and saved £800 because they are used products. Already seeing the 14 inch map m1 max dropping to £1000 as for mac minis they values drops like a stone after a year. Seen an M1 for as little as £500. I'd forget refurbished or new and buy a used as long as its good condition with some warranty. All be junk in 4 years so why waste money on new.

To be honest. I Wouldent worry about os support for the future opencore legacy patcher is much better then buying a whole new MacBook. I have a 2015 MacBook Air and it runs Ventura just fine with opencore

M1 Pro and Max are even more worth it especially in the UK as there was a huge price jump for the M2 Mac Pros . It went from £1,900 to £2,500.

I'm still running my 27" iMac from 2019 on Big Sur, Apple has been dropping support for Intel very quickly and they generally support macOS releases with security updates for 3 years so I'm guessing that macOS 14 will drop support for my Mac but Big Sur's still working fine so I'll keep using it for another few years. In regards to the next Mac I purchase in another 3 or 4 years I'll definitely look at getting a refurbished one whether we're on the M3 Pro or M4 Pro at that point since my Mac doesn't get much usage.

love the skit. These are literally the things no one thinks about. Do I want 6e and HDMI 2.1? Yeah, sure.... but do I NEED them? Hell no. I can't even use them right now because I don't have the other devices that require them to work. I already have 1G wifi with a wifi 6 (not 6e) router, and 1G is my fiber speed, so I'm not gonna get any faster than that.

Well considering I just got a brand new 16” MacBook Pro yesterday for $2099 it’s a hell of a “deal”. I am certain at the base line we are not looking at a $400 plus even more tax of an improvement. Since these macs were delayed I’m almost certain it’s worth skipping this generation. The M2 Pro is at best 30-40% better on the cherry picked perfect scenario. Why would you care that instead of waiting 10 minutes you waited 7 or 8 depending on whether is gpu or cpu heavy. Wi-Fi 6e is pointless unless you’re in a Wi-Fi dense area and can opt for the new frequency. At home Wi-Fi 6 covers the speed of im sure 99% of home internet connections. Hdmi 2.1 is great but what is the base consumer going to do with it? The laptop cannot handle games on 4k at 120hz. Certainly not 8k. We are going to see a real leap at 3nm. I would bet it will blow away the M2 Pro, Max etc. You will get real world power savings gaining more than a single hour. The ability to dissipate heat while running faster will be improved by a margin. My personal use case is I need exceptional battery for IT work, a big screen, and I run parallels for gaming. I cannot afford to max the laptop out either so bumping up 3 GPU cares is not going to bring a 40% uplift in windows games. Even if it did, going from 48-60 fps is not worth $400+ from $2099. IMO you should only buy an M2 Pro laptop if you can’t find an M1 Pro, or just have the money to spend. You’re hardly upgrading from an M1 Pro on the base level and when the 3nm comes out, you’re going to want to trade up guaranteed. Those kinds of leaps only come every 5-10 years and from now, you only have to wait 1-2 years.

i ended up getting a M1 pro macbook pro over the holidays when it was on sale. It's already more performance than I really need. I don't do any content creation. It's a glorified chromebook + Microsoft office machine for me. If I want to game I do so on console.

I just bought an m1 pro MacBook Pro EBay Refurbished and I’m waiting on it, it’ll arrive tomorrow, I got the 14 inch 16gb 1 tb for 1500$ and I’m upgrading from my still fully functional MacBook Pro 2015 which I still love, but when I edit photos in lr and ps at the same time it’s just terrible, but other than that works great. But yes, basically I went with this option and saved 1k$ because the exact same m2 it’ll be 2400 plus taxes.

Thanks for the vid. I'm not loving my 2019 13" MBP (Intel). It's _fine_ but I have a 2021 14" MBP (M1) from work and it is just so, so, so much better. But I wasn't loving the idea of spending $2k+ on a new 2023 14" MBP (M2). Refurb M1 sounds like it will work just dandy for me and save money I can put towards one of my many hobbies (*cries in photography*). Hadn't even thought about it before!
