The reason the doubled encoder and decoders engines on the M1 Max chip are important is because the speed of exporting videos was already limited by these engines in many cases. This removes the limitations so the exporting or encoding speed might even double if the GPU can keep up!

For the painter, regular pc is like sharing a brush whereas for M1, they each have their own. Nice explanation on the technology behind. Unlike many PC fanboys reviewing the M1 Mac talking about limitations comparing with x86 or Windows, they should focus on the innovations like you did. When will they ever admit that Apple set new standards in hardware innovations and operating system most of time and the rest just follow.

most pc fanboys don't use apple products because they don't like apple software and before, it was cheaper to buy a pc than a mac. Now is different. Though I still don't prefer apple preoducts, can't deny they make good things.

Using unified memory seems to be in contrast to the principle held to date in PCs (that unified memory is inefficient since it is slower memory than the VRAM on GPUs). Great that Apple is advancing the industry with a new system.

@4thNebula

@@threepac Yes, I thought of that. Was wondering if DDR5 and VRAM DDR5 are same. Another thing I thought of is that the M1 Pro chip codes ProRes but that is at best 4:2:2 10-bit and I only have a Sony 7RV IV which is only 8-bit at best so won't be able to take advantage of ProRes. Hopefully the added video codec processors in the M1 Pro will still be an advantage to me. If not may want to wait until I get that good of a camera.

The number of memory channels doesn’t matter so much as how wide the interface is. A normal desktop computer using DDR4 has a 64 bit wide interface per channel, so a dual channel system has a 128 bit wide interface. M1 Pro has 16 channels, but each is only 16 bits wide, for a total of 256bits. Still double the bandwidth at the same speed, but not so impressive as the 2 vs 16 channel comparison.

Also there might be an advantage to this, maybe lesser wide channels helps improve memory latency and efficiency, it’s not like Apple could not have gone with 32bits.

I'm still debating this too. I'm thinking the 24c Max with 32GB of RAM is the sweet spot unless you're really going to do some crazy stuff. With 32GB of RAM the M1 Max upgrade is only $250(CAD) for quite a bit more power. And let's be honest, the 16c Pro with 32GB of RAM will probably be enough for 95% of video creators anyway.

Keep in mind that apples ssd is fast enough work as a pesudo ram. So you could Theoretically use all 64 gb as vram and still not impact the general use of the machine except for a small slow down.

"Max Tech" - My theory is Apple changed the M1X's name out of respect to the "Max Tech" channel since y'all lost a beard and threw a bone to Prosser since he also lost his eyebrows. So they called the new chips the M1 "Pro"sser and the M1 "Max" Tech. You should be honored since it's so much easier to market something like Max Tech's M1 Max Mac's Maximum Tech Tips or take it even further with more alliteration!

I didn't expect apple to integrate the graphics into the die. Seems like apple has the r and d costs to afford using large die

It’s probably still cheaper for them than paying Intel and AMD for the chips.
@mikechaplin1566
@mikechaplin1566 2 жыл бұрын
The smaller the fab process geometry, the easier it is to include more circuitry in the die. The larger the die, the more likely a defect will land on the die and kill it, but with small geometries, the die are smaller so the likelihood of a defect landing on any specific die is lower, so they get more good die per wafer. The smaller geometries allow you to add more and more circuitry to the die and still get plenty of good die. Intel was struggling with smaller geometries, so their chips were larger and consumed more power, and there were fewer good die per wafer, so they had to charge more money for their chips. Bad deal on several fronts.

@@mikechaplin1566 yeah how large they go really comes down to TSMCs yields. Also unlike others Apple is probably not that much cost sensitive. Just make that thing expensive and customer will pay.

Games are for consumers. Until Apple releases consumer laptops and desktops with at least 16 GPU cores all we will get is what's on Apple arcade. For some reason Apple has always thought that good GPU performance only applies to pro users.

Maybe not right away, the overall Mac market share is still too small. But you can bet that all the major gaming developers are thinking hard about what their longterm strategy should be if Macs continue to move forwards on this curve.
