We may have poked a little fun at our brethren in the Corps in this video, but we do agree that the marine qual is the toughest out of the various branches. That said, a few things to consider. 1) USMC qual targets are substantially larger (approx 4x) than those we are shooting at here 2) this was actually the first time we pushed this rifle past 100, so there was a learning curve with the bdc 3) we try hard to keep this channel light, and avoid the dick-measuring contests seen on so many other channels. That said, let's not pretend that an entire group of shooters are infallible... I understand the value of pushing that idea that every Marine is an exceptional shot... they are generally more capable marksmen, but I also know of meltdowns on the qual range. -Henry

@rediius 5 жыл бұрын
I have been charged with Army qualification ranges in the past, and while new soldiers sometimes struggle with fundamentals, the biggest complainers are ALWAYS former marines who complain about the targets being too small, their M4 barrels being too short, and not getting enough time to engage a target since unlike Marine Corps targets, Army targets will time out and count as a miss if you take too long squeezing the circulation out of your bicep with your sling. "
@patrickjohnson3862
@patrickjohnson3862 5 жыл бұрын
Firstly, every Marine is a sniper. One shot one kill. Rah. If you don't believe me, check out the rifle range at Stone Bay... Second, great video. However, the targets at the qualification range are hand pulled paper targets, not steel and there is no back stop (speaking of the east coast) to see any dust up. But the marksman ship of the USMC is a joke anyway. The firing positions are hardly practical in combat scenarios with the exception of the sitting position... All joking aside, I've found that the 31A acog is capable of getting hits on targets out to 700m with standard issue M855.

I prefer to see more realistic situations not cherry picking bs. I know you can only get so far with that on a preset range but its good to see common ammo and non cherry picked shots.

While I am partial to the Army (my branch of service), I have met fine marksmen in all branches. The finest marksmen I have ever met, however, were all civilians. So, while we all may have fun infighting between the branches and "measuring dicks", we're all still just the USPS competing with Fedex and UPS. Cheers!

I think I figured out why the Marines held on to the fixed stock M16 for so long. Marines would use the stocks on their rifles to beat crayons into a powder so they could snort it. With the M4, the stock would break after doing this multiple times. The M16 didn’t have this problem, so they kept using it.

Purple is The Best Flavour was the name of my band in the late 90s. Met a few seppo jarheads back in Kangaroo 96 when they were all on a Joint Training Exercise in Northern Australia, and they used to talk about their marine cousins in not too flattering terms. I remember a few of our boys impressed them with an ‘explosive ‘ round from an old 303 rifle. Made a tree disappear in an awesome manner. Never told the stunned seppo audience that it was a setup - hollow tree of the type used in didgeridoos, with a nice chewy high-explosive center of something straight from the RACT depot.

The M16A4 with the RCO is a damn fine service rifle. Maybe not the best thing for room clearing, but do-able. And for everything else, the M16 is pretty damn good. If you're not having a gunfight in an elevator, you could so a lot worse than an M16A4. Easy to shoot well, accurate, smooth, almost no recoil, very reliable, and it gets the most out of the 5.56...

I've always liked the look of the full-size M16 much better than the M4. Sure I know it's not the easiest to transport, and not great for room clearing, but aside from room clearing it does everything really well. My country still uses the full-size M16 (or at least a local version of it) and I've never heard about any of our troops complaining.

To be honest, when I was U.S. active duty, I liked the M4A1 because it had an adjustable stock. Shooting with the armor on was a royal pain. Though I qas issued an old M16 in basic and an M16A4 with an M68 Aimpoint mounted before I was eventually issued an M4. Despite the convenience of the M4, there is something special about an M16. Glad that I trained with an older platform.

I enjoyed this one. Thanks! So much good in a 20inch barrel launching fast pills, with the smooth rifle length gas system and the longer buffer spring. Little M193's gettin it done almost like M262's, nice shooting! ACOG's are one of my favorite, they are light, you don't need batteries, and with an RMR you can go from point blank to distance and not leave the weapon to rotate a variable optic or manipulate a magnifier. I have a FN upper and a BCM A4 upper, the BCM is noticibly heavier, you could lighten up your build with an FN if you wanted.

That "chest, head, hat" thing is interesting. I remember in basic being taught "nuts, guts, center mass" for qual. Nuts out to 100m, guts for 150 and 200, and aim center mass for the 250 and 300. Though you mentioned zeroing for 200, and I think we zeroed at 50 or 100. Mind, this was with iron sights back in '03. I think I scored enough for Expert, but because it was my 2nd try I only got the Marksman badge.

Glad you had a good talk at the end because you said everything that needed saying. Steve Fisher says if you put a $500 dollar optic on a $2k gun, you have a $500 gun. The only way you can hope to match your rifle's accuracy and not be the limiting factor yourself is to get good glass. There's a time and place for that barrel length, and good God does it look like it runs smooth. Barely moves- putting even midlength gas to shame. Makes you think about universal carbine issuing.

We're seeing very similar accuracy out of this platform! We know a lot of soldiers have discussed liking the m16 over the m4 in the extended ranges for the Afghan mountains...did you feel the same way for Iraq?

Fantastic channel, Chan. I'd suggest that you use standard ball ammo (M855 or M855A1) to conduct these tests in the future as the M855/M855A1 are currently fielded in the US. I don't, correct me if I am wrong. know of any units using the 55gr balls.

There is so much leftover M193 in inventory I know of units that used them for almost all training and quals but only used M855 when in country and would re-zero in country. Granted this was nearly a decade ago and may have changed, but never underestimate how much the military produces and stores away for a rainy day and never issues.

You'd have done better with the correct model of the ACOG, which is the TA31RCO-A4CP, which has a different reticle. It's also ballistically matched to the combination of the 20" barrel and M855 ammunition (or so they say. I always found that with the rifle zeroed at 36/200 yards, if you wanted to hit at 500 yards, you needed to use the 400 meter mark on the reticle). Also, stop shooting from that bag. In five years active duty, the only rifle rest I ever got to use was my left arm. Some commands might allow the use of a grip pod, but the way we were taught, it wasn't really necessary. It was quite possible to put all ten shots in the black prone but unrested at 500 yards. In fact I once shot three straight headshots on a B-mod target at 500 yards.

In terms of function, I like the fixed stock most because it lets you use your rifle as a make shift step if you need to get over an obstacle, where as if you try to give yourself that extra little boost, then by putting your weight on a retractable one runs the risk of you breaking it when you add your own weight plus all your kit to it. In terms of style, I love a lot of the retractable stocks.
@rabbitdrink

also helps mashing up those crayons into a fine powder so you can snort them, retractable ones break too easily to do that

Not sure if you knew but something I noticed when I was in the Marines. The M16 and the M4 actually get a different ACOG scope. Inside of the scope it tells you if it was made for the specific barrel length and model to give you exact BDC alignment

There is also a noticeable drop difference between 55gr and 62gr when go you from 300-500 anywhere from 2-5 inches of drop which might lead to small changes when using a BDC reticle it helps to know which they calibrated it too.
@9HoleReviews

So this is Josh's first time on the rifle at these distances, the ACOG BDC is within MOA differences between 55 and 62 grain. www.ar15.com/forums/ar-15/Bartholomew_Roberts__Big_ACOG_BDC_Chart/18-229420/ secondly, we actually already filmed this rifle on this course with the carry handle and I think it may be the record holder with those sights. 1, I shot the iron sight M16 a lot back then... and 2, the iron sights are very nice for the M16 system. It'll be coming out once we finish post production though.

The cheast-head-had is what I learned in the Dutch army with the Diemaco C7 with iron sights. Those rifles had the old M16A1 sights and this is exactly how we learned it. Our rifles where zeroed at 250 meters BTW.

@@9HoleReviews That would be cool, I'm curious of the effectiveness. I was in the army in the 90's and only infantry received Diemacos with Elcan scopes. I'm curious about the effectiveness of those to, BTW. I think the Dutch army now only uses aimpoints with magnifyers these days. I don't think the new soldiers can use irons sights anymore 😂. A lost skill😂

@@9HoleReviews Yeah, there are back up sights. But they are considered 'back up" so the marksman lessons with those will be tiny. Now I think of it, all small arms here are equipped with some sort of scope. Colt-Canada, Minimi's, MAG's cal. 50's. The only guns without is the Glock. Weird.

Your BDC is set for a 62 grain bullet and your using 55 grain rounds probably why your point of aim is off. If it’s a 1 in 7 twist rate that will also affect accuracy of the weapon as well. Your videos are great though

Exactly, lots of people buy the RCO ACOG because that's what the marines used but they fail to realize marines also used 62 grain ammo. The ACOG TA31F is made for 55 grain 5.5.6 so that's what I purchased.
