We're seeing an interesting parallel from Air to Pro models across the board. Like the iPad Air M1, we're seeing comparable power upgrades to the Air models but find them lacking in one or two key components that necessitate a spec-up, which conversely puts them in a price position to rival the base models of their Pro counterparts. For the iPad Air M1, it likewise hits a rough spot with regards to its storage component, albeit this one in its physical capacity rather than its speed.

Got my new M2 MacBook Air 16GB/512GB a few days early this past Saturday and thought I'd post my thoughts. It's a beautiful machine with build quality that's superior to any Dell XPS laptops I've owned. Space Grey looks good. I wanted Midnight but the scratch and fingerprint issues chased me away. I don't record/edit video so it runs smoothly and cool with Office 2021 apps and streaming video. Feels strange using it after over a year with my M1 iPad Pro 12.9" and magic keyboard. I keep reaching for the Air's screen to touch an icon or scroll through a website. Had no idea how acclimated I became with the iPad's touch screen. Same with the iPad’s Face ID vs. Touch ID on the Air. Face ID easily wins that battle. If I made the decision today, I'd return the Air and stick with my iPad + magic keyboard setup. Gotta give it at least a week, though. Never thought I'd be so comfortable with a tablet. Based on my 3 days of use, Apple is gonna sell a ton of these new Airs.

Apple swap isn’t anything super-secret. It’s just a deep CompSci subject that you need to understand pretty well from a theory perspective before you can get to the details of what Apple does. MacOS uses what’s called a “unified paging system”. What that means is when you read a file from disk, portions of the file are actually memory-mapped and paged into RAM as if the file was a swap file. These blocks of data are considered “wired” (which is a subset of “used”) and act as a memory cache. They remain in RAM until the memory allocator decides that the blocks are needed for a different purpose. This is why in a simple read-file performance test, reading a file that fits in memory goes orders of magnitude faster the second time you read it. The data is already in RAM. If your program requests blocks of data for working memory, these blocks are potentially available to be swapped to disk at any time. The exact algorithm for deciding which blocks get swapped is likely buried deep in the MacOS internals. I could figure it out if I wanted, but the details just don’t matter enough for me to bother. The basic idea is if a block of memory hasn’t been accessed in a while, it’s likely to get swapped out to maintain a certain amount of free RAM for sudden requests. Except this is where the Mac has a few tricks up its sleeve. The Mac paging system sets aside a chunk of memory for compression swapping. Rather than swapping the data to disk, the Mac will compress the block and store the compressed copy in the compression space. This allows the Mac to free up memory for other uses, but still make memory blocks highly accessible if they’re needed at a moment’s notice. Only if there is pressure on the compression space does the Mac swap the *compressed memory* to disk. Swapping the compressed blocks drastically lowers the I/O cost of swapping, making the Mac that much more effective at swapping. If a swapped out block is needed, it will be swapped back in from the page file and decompressed from the compression space back into a regular block of memory. The multiple cores of modern Macs make this process extremely effective. In fact, it wouldn’t surprise me if Apple dedicated a bit of silicon to the in-memory compression. This is also why Apple iPhones were able to ship with so much less memory than Android phones for so long. Apple’s techniques were so effective that they were copied by both Linux and Windows. And I can say from personal experience that turning on the compressed memory (zcache) for Linux on a Single Board Computer is like magic. Everything just gets faster and more performant. Apple engineers _seriously_ know what they’re doing.
@TheEverydayDad2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the write up!
@thewiirocks2 жыл бұрын
@@TheEverydayDad You’re welcome! I should probably also note that Apple has some shenanigans going on in the file system as well. There’s transparent compression being used to make many system files faster to load, deduplication of data blocks making copying much faster, Just in Time allocation of disk blocks, sparsely allocated files, etc. I once made a multi-petabyte file on accident that the Mac allowed me to create due to the last few features. Took me a few minutes to wrap my head around what just happened!
@thewiirocks2 жыл бұрын
@jeffrey bankers Depends on your use case. As clever and efficient as Apple’s engineering is, it still has hard limitations. If you don’t ever push your machine very hard, you’ll get by with 8GB no problem. But if you’re a hard multitasker moving between dozens of programs or if you run heavy productivity apps like an IDE or Video Editor, then 16GB is probably a good idea.

Use a displaylink, it doesn't have any problems, I have been using it with my far weaker 12" macbook 2017 for years to output to two displays. Yea it sucks that it's not "native" but I can't imagine this m2 being hindered at all by the displaylink. I can't wait to get the m2.

You’re NOT crazy!!! When my thin 27” intel iMac power supply started having issues, rather than open her up and replace the power supply (purchased, sitting in closet ready to pop in) I said “that’s it! I’m done, time for Apple silicon” …… and paired with Apple Thunderbolt Display which I have 4 of, no matter how many hacks I tried you can only set up one with the m1 .. it’s INFURIATING .. and to be fair even more so on the m2 which has two (2) thunderbolt controllers .. this is not a hardware issue; it’s a software limitation esp on the m2 (aka bullshit)
@rohithmekala26082 жыл бұрын
But the M1 and M2 chips only have 2 display controllers. One for built in display and one for external monitor. You want more external monitor support get the M1 Pro and Max.
@markolepik85722 жыл бұрын
I'm in the middle of sending back my Samsung Galaxy Book 2 360 superlight powerhouse due to unbearable fan noises, and the M2 put Apple back on the menu. (I had previously given up an M1 Mini as well). But the "only 1 external display" aspect is indeed one of the major points. It also has to do with workflows where one specifcally needs the MS PowerPoint Speaker Notes (nope, note Keynote), which on Macs, still, cannot be put into Windowed mode (which is mindboggling), which means wasting screens, or not seeing your other files on the background during conducting complex online workshops, for example. Which means while the M2 is starting to look really attractive due to being fast AND quiet, it still lags behind is some simple aspects of even moderately more complex workflows (that in and of themselves are not that resource hungry, so they don't also justify shelling out the $$$ for a Pro).

But you ignore the significant performance improvement of the M2.Other reviewers who actually did the performance tests showed that it is BIG.

The single display support is nothing to do with TB3 vs TB4. It is an artificial limitation imposed by Apple to differentiate Air/Pro. And the slower SSD will impact not only swap, but USB data transfers.
@andrewcrossley24482 жыл бұрын
Must be a marketing decision as an M1 Mac mini can drive two screens.
@cedricpomerleau55862 жыл бұрын
It won’t affect most USB data transfers. That 1.5GB/s is around 10Gb/s, which is the speed of USB 3.1. So except if your using a USB 3.2 drive (or a Thunderbolt one), you won’t see the difference. For the display support, it has to do with Apple Silicon. The M1 and M2 only have one display controller, which can handle two displays (the internal one and an external one). The Mac Mini can handle two because it has no internal display. M1 Pro has two display controllers and M1 Max has four. That’s why the Pro can handle more screens. Note that the 13 inch equipped with M1 or M2 is also limited to one external display even if it’s a "Pro".

If you had a budget and could only afford to upgrade either the Ram to 16gb or the storage to 512gb which would be better? Thanks for any help 😁
@michaello92822 жыл бұрын
Going for 16gb ram personally. Drive speed isn't very noticeable and you can handle it by cloud.
@andyH_England2 жыл бұрын
100% get extra RAM and ignore anyone that says the 512GB storage. The whole slowdown is because of only 8GB of RAM, double that, and swap becomes moot ergo the 256gb speed will only then matter for transferring from and to external storage that is not that big a deal unless you are doing massive file transfers.
@Serenity_Realms_ASMR2 жыл бұрын
@@andyH_England I was also thinking the same thing I definitely won’t be doing anything that requires massive file transfers it’s just that everywhere I look there’s always something to do with the ssd issue in this laptop. 😂
@Nhguava2 жыл бұрын
Always choose the extra ram. For many reasons: you can't do anything about it in the future, whereas you can always start using a fast external SSD, which are way cheaper than upgrading your storage. Also, if you have more RAM, your computer will less often use swap memory, especially if you are a light user.

I have 64GB of ram in my M1 Max 16" MacBook Pro and I still find my system swapping memory, but game development will do that. That said, for the entry level device that Apple intends the MacBook Air 256 to be, this device will not only suffice, but excel for its use case. If you're a 3D artist, Unreal developer, etc, a more boisterous "Pro" device will be needed.

It's not about thinking SSD speed is going to be crucial on a day-to-day basis. It's not about benchmarks. It's about being charged a premium price for a less-than-premium product. It's a LOT of money to shell out for something hobbled by expediency.

Great review. The inability to drive 2 screens at home is why I bought an Apple refurbished 16/256 MacMini. That now drives my new 27 Studio Display with nano glass using Thunderbolt plus my trusty old Dell P2715Q using HDMI. By dialling down the incredibly bright Studio to the same brightness as my Dell, it’s a superb working combo. I have then added a small Apple mini sized dock that sits underneath with a slot for a slower SSD. This now has a 1TB WD blue card in. My view is use the internal SSD for production and editing and the dock SSD for storage of material and as a backup to my iCloud and OneDrive for high value materials. I’m lucky to have an M1 16/512 13 from my work and keep a good Startech dock there that somehow can drive 2 screens from an M1 MacBook. For field studio work my M16 2019 i9 is still a great workhorse. Fan noise when close to mics could in theory be an issue but I use an audio mixing desk and long wires to keep it apart. Fan noise is only really an issue when rendering long videos and I don’t do this on site but now back home on the Mac mini. Right tools for the job is key. For most people the M1 air but perhaps 16/256 is fantastic if on refurb deals from Apple.

I think the point folks tend to forget, is Apple isn't selling the configurations based on SSD performance but on capacity. I.e., whether you're using 2x128 or 1x256, if the performance meets their internal specs these would be considered equal. I imagine the design consideration was whatever configuration was most affordable to mass produce in relation to other active products. Wouldn't even be surprised if a board revision would pop up if Apple found themselves with a lot more 128 chips on hand and trouble getting 256s to furfill demand. Plus, let's be fair. For those who truly want the most awesome sauce performance possible, you shouldn't be buying a fanless ultra-portable. There are reasons why several thousand-dollar rack mount servers exist. Not to menton huge hulking laptops with whirling fans and desktop class performance. We all want the best for our money, but that doesn't necessary mean faster thing possible lines up with what the product was *designed* for.
@AyaWetts2 жыл бұрын
I am wondering if some M1 MBAs have 1 single 256gb and early review units had 2x128... and no one has caught it yet, and thats why some people don't see a difference? Also... macOS swap memory is not anything out of the ordinary and works like swap memory has worked for 30 years... not sure why you'd need a white paper, its very common knowledge.

At first I was a little unsure about the new MacBook air but have changed my mind. I really think the one to have is the base model. Most buyers of the base model are coming form an older 13" MacBook pro or it is their first laptop. For the price, it's an extremely compelling package. If you have the M1 MacBook air or pro, don't upgrade to the M2 Air or pro. If you routinely do things that require more system memory, a larger and faster SSD, and use external displays, then the 14" Pro is outstanding. I upgraded from the 13" air to the 14" pro and the 14" is like having two computers in one. It's not larger enough than the air to notice the difference in everyday carry but it is more than capable enough to replace most desktops.
