If you're buying (or have bought) an M3 MacBook Pro... what was the main driver for getting it?

For the base, just for bigger display, pro motion and speakers and when M3 is more than enough for the tasks. I have a tendency to choose large ram, great ssd and not so powerfull cpu, gets enough room to cool and the entirem system runs with less stress. Buying a M3 Max only for a specific app which depends on time and money, otherwise, ram and storage is more important.

I got the 16 inch M3, bigly loaded. Very happy. It surpasses the performance of my loaded M1 Ultra Studio. Hard to believe. This will be my last MacBook for sure. For just a handful of dollars, the possible CPU/GPU "conditioning" in the 14-inch configuration just wasn't worth the savings in travel (my travel is to coffee shops, not on a plane). You are a wonderful presenter, Mark. Thanks.

Thinking of it for 3D rendering in Blender (M3 has some big advances in hardware/coding for rendering), also heavy AI based effects, like the ones in DaVinci Resolve Studio - I understand these are the kind of tasks where the M3 chip will give a substantial performance improvement. If it's basic video editing/photo editing, it seems the performance is pretty on par with the M2 or even M1 for many tasks. But will probably just hold out for the M3 studio and stick with my M1...

If you've got an M1 AND your main job is 4K video editing, you won't see much of a bump because the heavy lifting is being done by the media engine which hasn't changed much. For a lot of other tasks, one might see a significant performance bump. Just depends on what you're doing.

Just got the base MBP14 M3 Pro as my first Apple Silicon computer and I honestly am already seeing much improvement from my 2015 MBP16 Intel one. It is quite the upgrade and much a needed one at that. The next MBP I'm probably going to get will hopefully be in like 10 years when I'll fully spec'd it out to last for the rest of my life.

I think it’s going to take some time to see the real performance benefits of the M3 series chips. I have a M1 Ultra Mac Studio and it took a good 6+ months for software to become fully optimized for it. Regarding export times, those are dependent on the encoder which are about the same in all of the 3 generations of Pro/Max chips.

So I bought the M3 Max with the 16/40 64GB coming from Intel. My honest take is unless you're coming from an Intel don't upgrade thinking it's another investment. If you have an M1 Max you're absolutely fine the performance is still up there from what I have seen. Yes all the benchmarks for all new devices will always be higher but real world usage for your renders will not see a mind-blowing difference unlike me coming from Intel. M2 Max users shouldn't even think of upgrading at all. and above all DON'T go into debt because you must buy every new device Apple releases lol

Since the Mark Ellis is too much of a dick to answer my question and instead just laughed/mocked me, if you’ve run denoise do you still have smooth playback in 4K (no proxies) or just it start to stutter? With my M1 Max (10 CPU, 32 GPU, 32GB) I had to drop as low as 720p in the timeline proxies for smooth playback. Have you tried anything like speed warp or super scale? How about optical flow for frame rate adjustments. I have an M3 Max 16/40, 48GB arriving in February and can do the tests myself, but was just curious if you’ve tried any of this or any other hardcore rendering/effect processes?

Do these still suffer the unpleasant imprint of the keyboard on the screen? It happens on my m2 air, and I’ve seen it happen with the MacBook pro too. Tolerances that low make it really easy to scratch or chip the screen with any trapped dirt (which has happened with mine).

For video coding/decoding, which you were doing, the M-processors all use the same coding/decoding part of the processor and not any of the CPUs or GPUs. The M Ultras, I think, have two of those media engines. For testing CPU and GPU you could have done some picture editing and exporting in ex. Photoshop Lightroom.

re 8:17 Max tech has a comparison of 16 vs 14 inch m3 max, and Ive seen one other. My understanding is that the 14 inch does throttle more, especially for gpu workloads, but the most extreme throttling is on the order of 10% slower for cpu only and 20-30% for gpu. More often you'll see numbers like 6% and 15% difference if it throttles; it's not much of a difference. The real difference is the fan noise and battery life. I got an m3 max 16 inch as a replacement to my mid-2018 15 inch MBP, which obviously was intel. I'm very, very pleased. The only thing I don't like, and maybe I'm the only one, is the loss of the TouchBar. I got used to it; it was nice. I'm amazed at the gaming it can do, and will probably find out how it fits my work flow soon, but its holiday season and, you know, first things first. :)

Well, it depends for what I do I use up all the cores on an M1/M2 no problem in fact my Intel 13th gen laptop pretty handily beats the M1/M2 when running lots of Docker containers. I tend to need 12-15 containers at one time. I want to go back to Apple Mac with the M3 Max to see if that will be enough for me. I believe they finally go to the performance to actually replace a current gen Intel Desktop/Workstation.

In terms of return on investment, I've robbed Apple blind on this $3k laptop as well as on my iPad Pro 12.9" from 2017 that is still performant. It matters a lot for me doing realtime audio, for video people, but for the other 99% of people just writing papers and emails and watching shitty clickbait KZbin videos like this, just buy the cheapest possible thing you can get. An 8gb M1 is absolutely massively more powerful than any student/business/general user will ever need. Productivity, research, and gaming are the only reasons anyone should care about specs anymore.

Your approach was very informative. I'm a Audio Engineer, And i'm upgrading from a 15' Macbook Pro Retina 2011. I have not experienced the silicon chips yet. And i was torn between purchasing the M1. But after careful consideration, i have noticed that for the amount that i would be paying for a 64GB Unified memory/1TB mac, i'm better off going with the M3 MAX. Now if only apple would have refurbished model of the silver color that would be great. Thank you so much for your contribution!!!

there's always a mistake since Apple makes incremental upgrades ro keep you throwing money. my mistake was to get the base version of m3 14 inch mbp with only 8gb ram believing all the false statements that it's enough. so i am returning it to get the m3 max 14/30 gpu and 36gb ram which for me is overkill anyway but still future proof. my windows machine has 128gb ram, ryzen 9 5950x 16 core cpu and nvidia 3090ti gpu with 24gb ram. i think that's still faster for less money.

@@octny Good for you to be able to return and order for the specs you want. Now you have peace of mind knowing that your new MBP M3 Max can do anything you throw at them efficiently for many years to come. 8GB of ram may not be enough in 2023. My 16GB MPA takes a long time to complete Lightroom AI noise reduction and PS generative fill. Yes, the statement circulating around that a unified 8GB ram is on par with 16 GB ram is a misrepresentation. Less is not more.

[11:57] Hey there! Thanks for sharing your thoughts on the M3 Max 14in MacBook Pro. It's always interesting to hear about people's experiences with new tech. 😊 I totally get your point about the color choice and smudges - it's something to consider for sure. The specs on your machine sound pretty impressive, and it's great to hear that the performance is top-notch. As for the comparison between the M1 and M3 Max, those few seconds might not make a huge difference in real-world use, but it's always fun to see how these machines stack up against each other. And regarding who this MacBook Pro is for, your insights are quite helpful. It's good to know that if someone has an older Intel Mac, this could be a significant upgrade. But if you already have an M1 MacBook Pro, it might not be a must-have unless you're experiencing performance issues. Lastly, I'm curious to know more about why you felt you didn't spec up your M3 Max enough and why you decided to return it for the 64 GB version. Looking forward to your future videos! 👍

An ipad with Apple Silicon can edit 4K video, just not as fast as the Maxes. It will work just fine. If time is not your highest-value resource then you are better off not paying Apple Taxes and just live with the 18Gb. I would go for a 1Tb SSD though, the 512 is *really* bargain-basement and I believe single-channel while the 1Tb is dual-channel, so, twice the throughput.

It's because the media engines are the same so for what you're testing it's going to be the roughly equal through the generations on the Max. So for a video editor? 100% no difference. But if you're a programmer, photo editor, or doing so many other pro tasks this will make a big difference.

A few years ago I switched from a desktop PC to a MacBook Pro M1 Max for music production, mainly because of the PC is glitchy and LOUD. Also I wanted a laptop. The MacBook has been great - well worth the high price and the hassles of learning a new OS. Because of low power consumption, battery lasts very long, and performance is not throttled much when unplugged. I have never heard the fans come on. I went for 64 GB and Max not because I need them now, but because I intend to keep the machine for at least 5 years, and who knows what amazing software there will be then. Also, I thought I might like to get into video editing someday. As for suggestions about what you should get, if money is an issue, you already have a good monitor, and you don't need a laptop, a desktop model may be better for you. Also, a refurbished M2 or even M1 could save a lot of money and would not be much slower than an M3 - still a huge boost over what you have now. For RAM, I wouldn't go lower than 16 GB - 32 if you can swing it - for performance and having lots of stuff open, but also to save wear on the irreplaceable SSD by minimizing disk swapping. For SSD, at least 1 TB. Firstly for the convenience of not having to move stuff to external storage as often, but also because disk writes reduce SSD capacity over time (or so I have heard. Don't know how true this is.) For number of CPU cores and performance vs efficiency cores, more is better, but an intermediate number will probably suffice for your needs. Best of luck in finding a the right system. Peter.

Hi, I'm completely new to the MacBook world, been using pc's up to now. But I'm filling my eyes and mind with endless clips and videos these days as I'm flirting more than ever about buying my 1st MacBook and it should be a Pro as I'm a lot into photography and I need some serious upgrade now. Watching all this clips what it tells me is that basically for all those who already own previous MB's the fact that upgrading to the M3 is not an absolute necessity (specs and performance comparisons prove it) gives me just an extra assurance that investing now in a brand new MB M3 I should be safe for quite some time!! The MB M3 model I'm more interested in is the Pro version 14', 36GB , I just don't know if I should go for the 1TB or 512Gb is enough. ;)))

I think you should go for at least 2 TB ... Once you spend that much on a machine, it's bad to be short of SSD... It's bad if you haven't got enough SSD, since the memory swapping may shorten the life of your computer and the security of your data...

So you're guessing that more RAM will improve the export time? Did your machine use all the 48GB RAM during the export test? Genuinely interested to see the result. The thing with RAM is not having enough is crippling, but having too much won't make it any faster. My gut says 32G is 'enough' for this test, so you'll get the exact same result. If your export uses the Media Engine video encoders, which seems likely, you'd also get the same results with the 'base' Max, with fewer CPU and GPU cores. Of course, for almost other workloads your pimped up M3 Max is going to wipe the floor with your old 16" - you're just not seeing it with this particular test. And in truth, I agree, if you're getting a mad laptop like this, why not go for 64GB? I just don't expect it'll help with this one test. Hope I'm wrong, good luck!

My M1 Max MBP with 64GB ram etc is still plenty fast enough and there’s zero need for me to upgrade for some years I suspect. In the subject of marks, I hate the shiny patch that develops on the trackpad. I bought mine through Apple Refurbished which saved $1000. Same warranty and IMO even better because I’ve read that Refurbished units are done with far more diligent hand checking etc. Apple are trying to create the same FOMO with the chips in their computers that they do with the iPhone. Nobody sane is going to change a laptop annually at that price so I don’t think they’ll succeed.
