If you're buying (or have bought) an M3 MacBook Pro... what was the main driver for getting it?
@joseteixeira5900 Жыл бұрын
For the base, just for bigger display, pro motion and speakers and when M3 is more than enough for the tasks. I have a tendency to choose large ram, great ssd and not so powerfull cpu, gets enough room to cool and the entirem system runs with less stress. Buying a M3 Max only for a specific app which depends on time and money, otherwise, ram and storage is more important.

I got the 16 inch M3, bigly loaded. Very happy. It surpasses the performance of my loaded M1 Ultra Studio. Hard to believe. This will be my last MacBook for sure. For just a handful of dollars, the possible CPU/GPU "conditioning" in the 14-inch configuration just wasn't worth the savings in travel (my travel is to coffee shops, not on a plane). You are a wonderful presenter, Mark. Thanks.

Thinking of it for 3D rendering in Blender (M3 has some big advances in hardware/coding for rendering), also heavy AI based effects, like the ones in DaVinci Resolve Studio - I understand these are the kind of tasks where the M3 chip will give a substantial performance improvement. If it's basic video editing/photo editing, it seems the performance is pretty on par with the M2 or even M1 for many tasks. But will probably just hold out for the M3 studio and stick with my M1...

So I bought the M3 Max with the 16/40 64GB coming from Intel. My honest take is unless you're coming from an Intel don't upgrade thinking it's another investment. If you have an M1 Max you're absolutely fine the performance is still up there from what I have seen. Yes all the benchmarks for all new devices will always be higher but real world usage for your renders will not see a mind-blowing difference unlike me coming from Intel. Since the Mark Ellis is too much of a dick to answer my question and instead just laughed/mocked me, if you’ve run denoise do you still have smooth playback in 4K (no proxies) or just it start to stutter? With my M1 Max (10 CPU, 32 GPU, 32GB) I had to drop as low as 720p in the timeline proxies for smooth playback. Have you tried anything like speed warp or super scale? How about optical flow for frame rate adjustments. I'm coming from an 11 year old laptop as a daily driver, and honestly the lack of available battery replacements and zero reliable external display capability is forcing my hand more than anything. In terms of return on investment, I've robbed Apple blind on this $3k laptop as well as on my iPad Pro 12.9" from 2017 that is still performant. re 8:17 Max tech has a comparison of 16 vs 14 inch m3 max, and Ive seen one other. My understanding is that the 14 inch does throttle more, especially for gpu workloads, but the most extreme throttling is on the order of 10% slower for cpu only and 20-30% for gpu. More often you'll see numbers like 6% and 15% difference if it throttles; it's not much of a difference. The real difference is the fan noise and battery life. I got an m3 max 16 inch as a replacement to my mid-2018 15 inch MBP, which obviously was intel. I'm very, very pleased. The only thing I don't like, and maybe I'm the only one, is the loss of the TouchBar. I got used to it; it was nice. And the M series 16” models are slightly larger. It seems as if the issue of thermal performance and fan noise might be keeping me from the 14”. Screen real estate is an issue also but I think I can get by with the 14” as much of the time I connect to an external display. The fans spin up often enough on my Intel machine. With my workload unchanging, should I expect the same from the 14”? Or is it so superior to the Intel chip that I shouldn’t ever encounter the heavy (heat) load that I am experiencing now. I ask that based on an understanding that the 16” will have better thermal performance than the 14” due to its scale.

Thanks for taking one for the team Mark! Think I'm sticking with my M1 Max since I need my remaining kidney. Just added the M2 Air 13" in the 512/8 configuration as my daily carry office slave device and man is that thing a great machine.❤ I'm betting against the 64GB MBP M3 Max being that much faster than the 48GB version. Looking forward to that video. Cheers!

I’m still using the original 2012 MacBook Pro with Retina display. It still works great, but requires to always be plugged in, not run any programs, be at a certain altitude between the hours of 2:00 - 3:00 AM, and a weekly exorcism from the local priest. Do you think it’s time to upgrade?…Uh-oh, Beelzebub’s back. Gotta dash!

if the touchbar won’t replace function keys, I would like to try them. They can be used for moving video timeline or for the frequently used hot keys .

I am a video specialist at a big moto corporation. I still have an intel Macbook pro 2017. Its a nightmare to edit. I have been presenting for 2 years to upgrade to the new M chip. Editing on the old intel is killing my soul! Hopefully this year I can get a M3 Pro Max P.S working at a corporate takes every energy to get things across the line....Like why a video specialist needs a decent laptop to edit on..

Im currently on a 2018 15inch mabok pro so either will be a big upgrade. My highest use case will be editng 4:2:2 10bit footage in resolve and premiere. Would love to hear your feedback!!!

I'm still kicking myself for "upgrading" my M1 Air for an M2 Pro. Sure it does some things faster, but it is heavy and I can't tell that the screen is better unless I put the 2 next to each other. If I had to sell 1 tomorrow, it would be the M2 Pro. As a matter of fact, I'm typing this on my iMac with an i5 that crunches through all duties admirably!

Always on the lookout for your videos Mark….they are always spot on👍🏾 I am still on the 2015 MacBook Pro retina 😱 and am trying to decide on the correct specs for the M3 for Music Production. The spec of the machine you have on order is what I think I will go for, but in 16” format. It’s just such such a lot of money, so I want buy right. Would be great to see you putting it through its paces on Logic Pro once it arrives!

So I guess upgrading for ME would be excellent. The last MacBook Pro I bought was in 2009 and it was about $2200. Thanks for sharing your feedback…I’m pulling the trigger today for black Friday

Lots of buyers regret videos around now. Seems the M3 range has some compromises in terms of memory bandwidth in the Pro chip models, and the odd memory configurations. And that's before the eye watering prices are thought about too!

I’m going through similar thing - bought highest 16” store had but it only has 48 GB Unified memory (upgrade for 100 more??🤪) AND it’s only 1T hard drive!! That’s the part that’s bothering me the most. I wanted to buy a bigger one but it said online it would take 3 weeks! I’m 1.5 weeks post ACL surgery and want to edit video now dang it! 😂 Why must the store refuse to carry anything higher than 1T???

In November 0f 2023 I purchased a MacBook Pro i6 inch base model with 18MB of unified memory. I had a brain fart and didn’t upgrade the RAM to 36GB because it was an extra $500.00 Canadian dollars, that was a big mistake. A couple of months ago I purchased a new Sony Alpha IV that produces 32MB RAW files and the MacBook was having issues stacking more than 8 photos and after twenty minutes I might get a stacked photo in Photoshop or a crash. Two weeks ago, I purchased a Sony A7R V 61MB camera and the MacBook crashed when stacking 6 full size RAW photos. The MacBook can stack 8 JPEG files and that is it. So, I ordered the new MacBook Pro Max with 64 GB RAM. I hope that it will be able to do much better than the MacBook its replacing. I am now doing a lot of macro photography thus all the photo stacking. The Sony A7R V produces awesome photos in RAW at 61MB.

Hah! I’m like that! I have an iMac Intel 2017 system and it is so nice. I use it for writing and designing. I have an M3 Max specked out plus a new monitor on there way and had to go full crazy on the order. Oh… there is regret, but the iMac is sluggish on my blender builds. I usually have too many things going at one time. Hopefully this new setup helps.
@AngeAlexiel Жыл бұрын
of course there is no differences for video encofing or decoding .. they have the same Hardware video encores and decoders, but the M3 max has a new AV1 decoder.. but the difference is quite big in term of GPU performance for 3D and even CPU performance, these M3 max are more often near the performance of the M2 ultra Mac Studio or Mac Pro ... but for video encoding , a base M series chip is okay ....

[11:57] Hey there! Thanks for sharing your thoughts on the M3 Max 14in MacBook Pro. It's always interesting to hear about people's experiences with new tech. 😊 I totally get your point about the color choice and smudges - it's something to consider for sure. The specs on your machine sound pretty impressive, and it's great to hear that the performance is top-notch. As for the comparison between the M1 and M3 Max, those few seconds might not make a huge difference in real-world use, but it's always fun to see how these machines stack up against each other. And regarding who this MacBook Pro is for, your insights are quite helpful. It's good to know that if someone has an older Intel Mac, this could be a significant upgrade. But if you already have an M1 MacBook Pro, it might not be a must-have unless you're experiencing performance issues. Lastly, I'm curious to know more about why you felt you didn't spec up your M3 Max enough and why you decided to return it for the 64 GB version. Looking forward to your future videos! 👍

straight question - doesnt the 16 core CPU, 40 core GPU and 48gb unified memory on the 14 incher the same as the 16 core CPU, 40 core GPU and 48gb unified memory on the 16 incher?? If yes, you shouldn't be bothered. If NOT, there is some serious problem somewhere
@the_flushjackson9 ай бұрын
That's correct -- the display size is just straight cost. Zero real world meaningful difference within the same spec SKU.

Great video, straight to the point. I get triggered easily by some other youtubers upgrading from M1 Max to M3 Max saying that “it was time for an upgrade”. People seem to forget that to this day, a regular M1 machine can offer more than decent performance. These chip upgrades are now catering more and more to a smaller group of professionals that will actually take advantage of the performance.

@alimomen Жыл бұрын
It's because the media engines are the same so for what you're testing it's going to be the roughly equal through the generations on the Max. So for a video editor? 100% no difference. But if you're a programmer, photo editor, or doing so many other pro tasks this will make a big difference.

Mark- I’m a bit confused. The main message “I made a mistake - should have got 64GB instead of 48GB” seems clear but entirely unsubstantiated. After your benchmarking showed near-equivalence with the M1 16”, what reason do you have for thinking 50% more RAM was a colossal mistake?
@MarkEllisReviews Жыл бұрын
You’re right - it’s totally unsubstantiated. As noted at the end, I might as well just spend another £200 and grab the 64GB model. No rhyme or reason.
