This year, the base Pro became a nice sweet spot for a lot of people. M3 Pro had serious omissions and the base 8GB RAM config was questionable at best. This year, there are no port omissions, no abysmal amount of memory (thanks to Apple Intelligence setting a new, more reasonable bare minimum for memory) and although M4 itself is still making me ask "is it going to be enough for a laptop with the "Pro" moniker", it still is good for someone who's just getting into creative stuff. People who have solid reasons to go for the M4 Pro know what they do for a living On the other hand, combining this one with an iPad Mini 7 could be such a nice setup. Powerful, yet so portable.

The idea of the touch bar was to make custom buttons to make workflow faster. Keyboard shortcuts have been doing that since before laptops were a thing. They’re faster than the touch bar could ever be, hence why it was a gimmick.

I had originally planned to by an M3 Air maxed out, and at the time it was A$3599, when the M4 was released, I decided to go base M4 chip but upgraded to 24gb/2tb, and was only A$100 more for what I had planned to spend on the Air, it was a no brainer considering the the extra ports and better display. I had thought about the nano-texture, but my MacBook is pretty much in clamshell mode 95% of the time.

I remember in the 90s when I spent $2k (like $4k in today dollars) for a Compaq laptop. I’m still trying to decide if I want to upgrade from my M1 MBA which is still the best computer I’ve ever owned and going strong. I’d love the extra ports but worried about the extra weight. Love how light my air is.

im still using my 98 compaq laptop to this day, it can handle word docs, 720p youtube, light photo work, etc its not a bad machine, ive got alot use out of it and to this day it still works great and i use it 4-5 times a week

@ Yea I feel a huge difference, I mainly used my 2019 (1Tb 16 Ram) for photo editing and it would overheat pretty quickly with the fans going crazy. In some cases Lightroom Classic would lag a bit and take time to preview presets. Now everything is crazy quick and snappy with almost no lag. Pretty happy with it, in any case they have a holiday return window so you have until January to return

I have a question about RAM Since I’ve never used a MacBook, I don’t know exactly how much unified memory I need. On my Windows PC, I have 32GB of ram installed and I generally use around 16 GB of RAM. Does this mean that the 24GB on the MacBook Pro will be sufficient enough? I’m trying to future proof it for atleast 4 years.

On Windows you have 32gb RAM + 16gb VRAM or less depending on your GPU . Unified memory on Mac is shared between those GPU & CPU so you need to get more than you would have on Windows ...

Rather go with M4 Pro with 48gb ram. M4 max with 36gb is not gonna survive long term. Also max chips have less battery life. M4 Pro is a balanced one.

Since you do light work extra performance of M4 Pro wont be noticeable So get the M4 16gb 512gb and get a external ssd But if you want onboard storage go with 1tb

I have the M4 Pro 16" with a 24GB/1TB configuration and it's the fastest computer I have ever owned. It's a dream to Photo/Video edit on. I think the M4 Max would be over kill and a waste of $$$ based on your use description. I would consider the $200 upgrade to the 1 TB SSD (it's a faster R/W speed and gives you some overhead). 14" or 16"?? I've had both. If you're packing it around a lot the 14" is way more portable. If you don't mind the extra weight and size, the 16" screen is better just because of real estate and the speakers are noticeably better on the 16". You also get better thermal management with the 16". Hope that helps.

@@oren_katzThat would be an excellent option for a beginner just dipping into photo/video work. I use it in a professional setting with 6+ track videos and transitions and effects and it serves me great. I also use it to edit podcasts and everything flies

16" inch is powerful, but massive, especially in a university setting. It's bigger than most University desks lol, keep that into consideration. many students I remember trying to bring it into school and it'd just be such a hassle to lug around, and often would cover up the view of the board because of its massive screen, so people behind them couldn't see the lecture. Power is useless if you can't afford to physically use it in most places lol Go with 14" inch. You'll be set. Hell even use the extra money you save from the 16 inch, to bump up your 14" spec to the next tier with better chip and 1TB storage.

The M4 base model should have been called "MacBook". The M4 Pro models are of course proper "MacBook Pro" 's, much like in the olden days of eyewatering yet irresistible pricetags that were somehow still worth it because hell yeah, titanium. Then there are of course the Max models, and what more logical choice than to call them "MaxBook Pro". Which triggered Ive so hard he insisted Tim channel Jobs' eclectic yet unwaivering sense of leadership on the double and fire the smartalec in question for coming up with this ungodly bastardization of the Mac brand into orbit. Stat. So they stuck with the umbrella name, mostly because it helps the lowly lounge crusader to feel like they are part of the real world which is essential to keep the reality distortion field in place that keeps telling us we need new equipment to make new things, when we just need new ideas.

I thought about getting a base M4 Macbook Pro, but the price is just not good. I got a Vivobook S 14 with the new AMD Ryzen AI 365, 24gb ram, OLED display, etc.. that can do everything I would want to do on the Mac and more for $999. Similar speced Macbook Pro base model is $1799 from Apple, maybe can find a deal somewhere for a little off? maybe not? Doesn't seem worth the price.

With the holiday sales going on, the base M4 with 24GB ram and 1 TB SSD is selling for the same price as an M4 Pro with 24GB Ram and 512 SSD. I've been away from apple as my primary computer for a few years and going to go back. Torn between the two. No don't buy a mac. It is cringe, outdated, and surprisingly, even worse then ipad os, and that on is so bad. I am using windows and linux on descktop and servers, and I never seen a worse product then mac OS since windows 98, and on top of their software you need to deal with their lack of any support or service for their products. I went in an apple stor and ask for a battery replacement for my m2 ipad pro and they refused, then I asked if they can at least change key caps to my M4 mackbook pro and all I received was very loud and agressive "NO!". Excuse me for using your product. I will make sure to avoid them like the plague.
