It was designed with a smaller profile and smaller canisters to make it easier to sight in with your weapon. Of course, having something on your face when you sight in is always going to make it a little bit more difficult, but it's better than trying to do it with the M40. Also, if the canister on your firing side is REALLY that much of an issue, you can just take it off when killing commences, and put it back on when killing ceases.

Forget the gym. Have C.E. electricians use it while setting up the EALS in the heat while full MOPP4. That's a real test.

It does have one shortcoming though, you can't use 40mm NATO filters with it like you could with the MCU2, MCU2-P and M40 series. But I think there is a special service version that will take the 40mm filters, why they didn't make them all that way only the Pentigon knows.

I don't see how using an odd fitting filter would be of any advantage, if anything it would be a disadvantage, it would be like using odd sized riffle cartridges just to stop an enemy from using U.S rounds. The M17s also used special filters and the old Soviet Union still used 40mm NATO size filters, aside from specialized masks, and I'm sure they had plenty to examine from Vietnam. In any event the longevity of the filter has more to do with the filter material used then the cartridge design.
