Say Hallo to a donor BMW E93 M3 with 103k miles and structural damage. In this episode, we drop the engine and transmission from this M3, take it apart, and check and measure everything for wear and tear. Are the main and rod bearings really bad?

You right. I can live without M539 for sure. It's fun to watch, but nothing else special for me is there. I asked few times for some guidelines, for example, how to find good service manual, what software or book he uses, that sort if things, and they didn't happened. The content is only fun to watch, but it's not educational. So when time come that you must have to pay to watch, i wouldn't be in that group. I don't understand the people so obsessed with How you can do this for free??? Sreten is become little cooky lately, by the way.

Despite of bearing material the biggest factor in the wear of bearings is the oil clearance, it must be pretty tight from the factory to allow any sort of crank to bearing contact because ideally you’d never have any metal to metal contact since you can’t compress a liquid and the thin film of oil is there to prevent that. In operation and under stress interesting things do happen. The idea of the front of the crank getting pulled up by tension in the timing chains makes sense since you’re taught not to over tighten accessory belts for the same reason.

Also, if you sell donor car as is plus whole rotating assembly you could pobably finance stroker kit 🔥 kits available from factory 4.4 up to 4.7l for 9k USD. Includes crankshaft, rods and pistons with pins and rings so everything. BTW also don't forget to replace secondary air injection valves (there two at the back side of heads). They are not that expensive, they do tend to fail (one of mine just did) and they are absolutely awful to replace with engine in the car. And last but not least. S65 had 3 issues. Conrods bearings and main bearings as you already know but also the clearance between conrods is smaller that standard and sometimes under load (when they swell from heat) they can make contact. I don't remember what the official clearance range was, you can Google it or ping me of you won't be able to find it

Piston rings need to be specific for the S65 engine because of the cylinder sleeve coating from the factory. If you use non oem piston rings the engine will have massive blow by, consume large amounts of oil and smoke out the tailpipe like crazy. This was all learned via Steve Dinan. 👍🏼
@M539Restorations
@M539Restorations 9 ай бұрын
It's an AluSil block, there is no such thing as cylinder sleeve coating. AluSil stands for Aluminium-silicon, and there is a special honing/etching process that exposes silicon in the cylinder bores, on which piston rings ride on, as Aluminium itself is too weak and rings would eat up the bores quickly. It is a common misconception that AluSil is a coating, but it's not. As long as you use piston rings meant for AluSil, there will be no issues. :)
@BxTpr
@BxTpr 9 ай бұрын
@@M539Restorations Correct. I couldn’t remember the name of the material the block was made of but the OEM rings work best on the Alusil. I’ve seen two s65 builds where they tried using aftermarket rings and both engines had massive blow by. I don’t know if there’s a specific coating on the rings for the alusil or the profile of the rings that keep them sealed against the alusil. Anyways can’t wait to see the finished product Broski.

Hi Sreten, I just want to say that your videos have made me believe in my skills to do things myself. I went from never having done anything myself to fully renovate my apartment, which includes lots of things I had never done before, working with concrete, cement, sanding, painting, etc. Thank you so much you are such a big inspiration for me

On "Anything BMW" this is without doubt the best channel out there. Content,subject matter, editing and delivery is as good as anything on TV. you are to be commended.
