@Treblaine4 жыл бұрын
M60 originally competed against the FNMAG (M240) and rightly excelled, especially in accuracy which was exceptionally good, the M60 is still the most accurate machine gun of its type. The M60 is so much more accurate than the 5.56mm calibre M249 that the weight advantage of 5.56mm is wiped out, you need to fire so many more rounds to get the same density fire within the "beaten zone" that you use weight of ammunition at the same rate. Unlike the M240 the M60's bolt locked directly into the barrel extension so the receiver didn't take the force of firing, this meant the M240 must be heavier and had a very fixed lifetime, the receiver would take the pounding and wear out then the machine gun would be useless. M60 had higher wear on the bolt/barrel but those were far easier and cheaper to replace even several times in the gun's lifetime. This wasn't an onerous requirement, for every 1000lbs of ammunition fired you replaced the bolt assembly, importantly this could all easily be done in the field, no armourer needed, it's a replaceable wear component like how barrels wore out. So lighter, more accurate, less time in the armoury having popped rivets repaired, what's not to like? The problem was the logistics chain literally just refused to abide by the maintenance schedule as the wear-parts expired (and when they did, bought junk parts) this caused cascades of failures. M240 was adopted as much to cater to the grifters and bean-counters of the so-called military industrial complex, M240 was an overbuilt design that was resistant to being fed sub-standard "lowest bidder" components replaced far behind schedule.

In the regulations, everyone carried a box of ammunition just for the machine gun. Assistant gunner #1 carried 1 box of ammo and about 3 extra cans, today known as "ball sacks" that attaches to the side, and only has a pistol because he changes the barrel and helps the reload. Assistant #2 carried 2 whole boxes of ammunition in addition to his service rifle, that is a lot to shoulder.

Fun fact: The modern German army's MG3 is essentially just an MG42 rechambered for the 7.62x51mm NATO cartridge. Fun fact: The BAR issued in WWII was different from the version issued in late WWI. The WWI model was either single shot or full auto. The WWII model has only fast and slow automatic fire, but has a tendency to jam on fast due to a design flaw with the magazine where it has trouble feeding the ammo fast enough on fast fire. Also, Walking Fire, while I can't recall the specifics, was definitely out of the picture by WWII as a US doctrine. Maybe firing while walking is something done post-WWII, but the actual doctrine of Walking Fire where you literally shoot from the hip whilst walking towards the enemy is not. Reality quickly saw to that with no one really being able to hit anything and most guns you could carry having small ammo capacities. (Case in point, the BAR.) Besides, Walking Fire was invented to cove troops crossing no-man's-land, and had no other purpose. Another point, the BAR and MG42 were built with different goals in mind. The BAR is meant for accurate automatic fire in support of the squad. The MG42 is a suppressive, area denial weapon. While true the goal of the squad was to defend the MG, it's also true that the MG was to suppress the enemy so everyone else to kill the enemy. Offense is the best defense, and all that. 🙂

You're unable to hear the individual shots of an MG42; just a constant noise. Unfortunately it was incredibly inaccurate, much less mobile than most, and required a whole team to work with it. I guess it's no wonder that every single day after the first landing, German forces were pushed back on the western front, consistently underperforming as anything other than intimidation.
