Don't forget that the Thompson was also used by the U.S. in Korea and in the early days of Vietnam until it was replaced by other rifles such as the m3 grease gun, M14/m1a and the m16. The Thompson was also seen in several other countries after WW2 such as China, Indonesia, Greece, Yugoslavia and Algeria. The last known use of the Thompson in the U.S. was in the early 1970’s by the FBI when they were declared obsolete and ordered to be destroyed
@sylokthedefiled30475 жыл бұрын
Well, the M14 was moreover a replacement of the M1 Garand, and the M1 Carbine respectively. By those times the M3 Grease Gun had already pretty well replaced the Thompson in most areas, as it was cheaper, lighter, and easier to use. If you wish to look for a more fitting replacement of the Thompson/M3 Grease Gun, then I believe the ArmaLite AR-15/Colt M16 would be a more fitting replacement, as it was lighter and had much more fair recoil control compared to the M14, but more range and stopping power(in some respects) compared to the Thommy/M3. Not completely wrong on your end, but definitely a little misguided, I would say.
@OriginalBongoliath5 жыл бұрын
@@sylokthedefiled3047 Except literature at the time by the Army showed the M14 replacing everything except the general purpose machine gun which was to be the M60. So on paper, yes the M14 was to replace everything. In practice it didn't happen and in many instances some of those weapons outlasted the M14 until the early 2000's when it was brought back in to service as a 7.62 DMR.
@sylokthedefiled30475 жыл бұрын
@@OriginalBongoliath As I stated then. Although the M14 *was* to replace everything, that was not the case. That was what I was getting at, not what they *hoped* would happen, but what actually did.

@@Nyx_2142 yeah the 1928/1928A1 Thompson variants with the front grip and without the front grip were used by America when they entered in 1941. They had the charging handle located ontop of the receiver instead of on the right side of the receiver, and could take drum magazines aswell as regular stick magazines.
@edm240b9 Жыл бұрын
This is because the early Thompsons could accept the drum magazines, while the military M1 and M1A1s could not. The reloading procedure for the drums is different than loading in the stick mags. That being said, both the 50 round drum magazines and the 20/30 round stick magazines saw service in WWII. Even though the M1/M1A1 replaced the M1928A1 officially, both models saw usage until the end of the war. There were still guys that had drums in their Thompsons in 1945.

They're pretty decent. They don't go super into detail and sometimes they say things that are a little bit of a stretch like saying the m1 Garand was the best rifle of ww2 or talking about it's limited use in Vietnam yet totally glossing over the Garands heavy use in Korea. They don't lie or falsify facts though which is great. They might omit some things or miss some details but they don't ever knowing get something wrong.

Pfitz indeed, although most of the Iconic Arms series covet pretty much everything there is to know. Also, what WAS the best rifle in WW2?
@pfitz93466 жыл бұрын
@@jozinek876 If you want to know more there's no channel better than forgotten weapons on KZbin. In terms of the best rifle that's a hard one because there's so many types rifle. Overall the best one could very easily be considered the stg44. It could do everything a rifle could plus it had a 30 round mag and was automatic. That combined with the intermediate cartridge made it both accurate at long range and controllable in close quarters. Had that gun been rolled out in larger numbers or utilized effectively it would have terrorized the battlefield. The stg birthed the ak 47 and created the assault rifle and intermediate arms cartridges so it's hard to not consider that one in the running. If we had to say overall I'd have to say the stg. However, There's just too many categories of rifles at this point in time. If I were to break it down into 3 categories, assault rifle, semi auto rifle, and bolt action it would be easier. Best bolt action hands down the K98 of which the best version was the m41 out of Sweden. It was just the best version of the best rifle. In semi auto rifles it is highly debated but many people consider the French semi auto rifles like the Mas 40 to be the best. The g43 was kind of garbage, finiky, and prone to breaking a good gun for the range not for a war. the SVT 40 is actually a great gun but had some weird accuracy issues at long ranges. the m1 Garand is well known but only because it was the only semi auto of the war that was standard issue for all troops. It's shortcomings are made up for by having a dozen of them where the other rifles only had one. The En Bloc was genius though which severely cut down reload times where as the other semi autos usually fed from stripper clips and even the ones that had detachable mags were only issued with 1 or 2 because they were expensive. Most of the other semi autos were either obscure oddities that never really got battle tested or prototypes or were cobbled together. In autos the stg kinda wins by default. Nothing was really competing with it.
@OriginalBongoliath5 жыл бұрын
@@pfitz9346 The M1 was the best general issue rifle of WW2. Semi-auto beats bolt-action hands down as a general issue combat rifle. It made everything else obsolete overnight. The SVT-40 came close and was better on paper but in practice was a disappointment. Don't get me started with German semi-auto rifle attempts that were abysmal failures. The StG-44 came too late to have any meaningful impact, wasn't general issue, and was going to be replaced by the StG-45 anyway that never saw service. The MAS-40 never saw combat so completely irrelevant and stupid to call itself the best when it was never proven. Practice always beats theoretics.

The Thompson has also found itself the preferred firearm of superheroes from time to time as both Logan (before becoming Wolverine) and Captain America (and that one intelligence agent from the SHIELD precursor) have used it in movies. Also it and its designation were the basis for the iconic pulse rifle in the Aliens movie: The M41A (and later in Alien: Colonial Marines M41A2). Basically they took the Thompson and gave it a sturdier frame and a 12 gauge shotgun barrel for the grenade launcher and bingo got yourself one of sci-fi's best firearms.

One thing I find interesting is that this gun was designed in the 1920s which was a time of class and elegance, and so that was a part of its design. But later after WW2, the country focused more of functionality, and so new guns were fitting with the ages as they went along.

And that is the problem with all gun laws trying to cut criminals from getting weapons. They do that in the way that hits no criminal and all civilians. In Poland (and by extend European Union) we have very restrictive gun law (there is no way for you to have automatic fire gun legaly and any short smallarm with calliber of over 12mm- something like S&W 500 is not legal for ordinary people). What did it achive? Almost no civilian has gun (it is like 1 gun per 100 people, where in Germany it is 30 per 100 people and in Swizerland it's 70 per 100), but there are still criminals with guns. How? Black Marcet. It is mind blowingly easy to get illegal gun in Poland (before 2010 there was marcetplace in Warsaw where you could buy all sort of illegal or stolen things- I even once saw automatic AK for 200 PLN- About 60$). Yet there is one type of weapon you can buy without any regulations- Black Powder Guns. You can buy one like bag of sugar and some stores even offer shipping package with one to your home. This law is in existance since early 2000 and we have 2017, and still there was not a single report of someone robbing shop with blackpowder gun or something like that.

i once fired a thompson in the "chicago typewritter" configuration, i wasn't expecting much from such an antiquity, well was i in for a surprise when i realised this thing barely had any recoil. from such an old design, made to be mass produced the cheapest way possible, it's genuinely impressive to be able to shot 10 round bursts in a target 30m away when it's not only your first time firing the gun, but a full auto SMG. honestly against soft unarmored target, and as far as big bore SMG, i think it's still among the best one after a Kris Vector.

@ReaperCH908 жыл бұрын
I'd say it's even more. a car was around 500 $ in the 50ies. Just adding the inflationrate over such a long time does not really work out. you have to compare the average wage now and then and see how long you had to work for it comapred to today. another important point is the non existing gold standard since bretton woods has been cancelled. we could compare it with dollar / gold then and now and have a number, but I am too lazy.
